If your pipeline already supplies page coordinates, use a coordinate-based overlay; if it supplies only a phrase, use text matching to find that phrase in the PDF’s text layer. These approaches solve different problems, and neither should be mistaken for a saved PDF annotation.
Choose coordinates or text matching based on what your pipeline returns
Think of the viewer as a rendered PDF page with a transparent layer above it. Each highlighted region belongs to a particular page and must use geometry the viewer can interpret.

React PDF Kit describes two paths: useElementPageContext places an element using coordinates already available to your application, while useHighlightContext starts with text or keywords and finds matching locations on the text layer. The vendor summarizes the distinction this way: “useHighlightContext starts from a string and finds the box for you off the text layer, while useElementPageContext starts from coordinates you already have.” See React PDF bbox Highlighting: Show RAG Citations on the Page. For RAG systems whose parser or OCR pipeline returns bounding boxes, the coordinate path is the relevant starting point; for citations represented only by a quote, text matching is the natural fit.
The hook names and behavior here are React PDF Kit’s API description, not a universal React PDF convention. Check the documentation for the package version you use before adapting an implementation.

Keep page identity and geometry together
A citation region is not just a rectangle. Store it with enough information to resolve the correct document and page, as well as the text that explains why the region was selected. React PDF Kit’s interface material describes selection and match data with page information and rectangle geometry; its Interfaces documentation is useful context for the shape of that data.
- Keep the document identity and page identifier alongside the source excerpt.
- Represent a passage with as many regions as it needs. A passage broken across lines or separated text fragments may need multiple rectangles or quads rather than one large box.
- Preserve the distinction between the parser’s page numbering and the viewer’s page index until you have verified how they correspond.
Page-specific geometry also appears in PDF.js Express’s annotation example: it assigns an annotation to a page and supplies quads that describe the highlighted text. See Create highlight annotations in PDF.js Express.
Validate the coordinate mapping before relying on alignment
PDF viewers and document extraction systems may describe position differently. The cited interfaces demonstrate rectangles and quads, but do not define one conversion convention shared across parsers and viewers. Treat the mapping between them as an integration responsibility, not an assumed compatibility guarantee.
Before shipping, establish what the parser’s coordinates mean and what the viewer expects. Check whether values are normalized, measured in PDF points, viewport pixels, or another unit; confirm the origin and vertical-axis direction; and account for page rotation, zoom, crop behavior, and page numbering. Convert at a deliberate boundary in your code rather than scattering ad hoc adjustments across rendering components.
Then navigate to the citation’s page and inspect representative documents, including multi-line passages and rotated pages. This is a validation practice, not a guarantee that a particular parser-viewer pairing will align without correction.
Choose a visual overlay or a persistent annotation
A React-rendered overlay can guide someone to a citation in the current viewer without changing the PDF. React PDF Kit explicitly describes its bbox overlays as a display primitive, not an annotation feature. Use this approach when the goal is to show where an answer came from inside your application.
If readers must save, edit, export, or share the highlight as PDF markup, use an annotation-capable workflow instead. In PDF.js Express’s documented example, the application creates a TextHighlightAnnotation, sets its page and bounds, supplies quads, adds it through the annotation manager, and draws it. That is a separate annotation API flow, not a persistence feature provided by a simple overlay. Consult the PDF.js Express highlight-annotation guide for that product’s example.

- Identify the input. If retrieval returns boxes or quads, use a coordinate-driven path; if it returns only a phrase, locate the text through the viewer’s text layer.
- Attach context. Keep document identity, page identifier, excerpt, and one or more regions together for each citation.
- Verify geometry. Map units, origin, axis direction, rotation, crop behavior, zoom, and page numbering between extraction and rendering.
- Navigate and inspect. Open the cited page and check multi-line, fragmented, and rotated-page examples against the rendered document.
- Match the output to the need. Use an overlay for in-app visual guidance; use an annotation workflow when the markup must become part of the PDF experience.
For React’s PDF viewer and layer context, the react-pdf README points to the text-layer and annotation-layer stylesheet assets. Their presence does not, by itself, establish a shared coordinate conversion with an extraction pipeline.
