No. A smart TV does not automatically include a personal video recorder (PVR). Recording support depends on the exact TV model and region: some models save broadcast programs to a USB hard drive, some offer only temporary pause-and-rewind (timeshift), and others offer neither. Check the full model number and its country-specific manual before buying storage or counting on a recording.
What PVR means on a smart TV
A PVR can save or schedule a supported TV broadcast so you can watch it later. Timeshift is different: it temporarily buffers the live program currently playing, letting you pause or rewind recent scenes. The buffer may disappear when you change channels. LG describes this behavior for its Timeshift feature in its US support guidance.

Manufacturers use different names, including PVR, DVR, USB HDD recording, and Timeshift. A menu option or feature name alone does not establish that a particular television can make permanent recordings; confirm the exact capability in its manual.

Which programs can the TV record?
Recording support usually applies to broadcasts received through a compatible tuner built into the TV—not every picture that appears on its screen. Samsung’s Germany-specific guidance says its PVR requires a signal received through the TV’s integrated tuner and does not work with a program supplied by an external receiver. Sony’s 2025 guide describes recording authorized digital TV and radio broadcasts, and says encrypted signals cannot be recorded.

- Built-in tuner: May be recordable if the model supports PVR and the broadcast is permitted.
- External receiver or set-top box: Do not assume the TV can record its output. Samsung’s cited guidance specifically excludes recording from an external receiver.
- Streaming apps or HDMI devices: The cited manufacturer guidance does not establish that TV PVR can record these sources. Treat broadcast PVR and app or HDMI recording as different capabilities.
Broadcaster permissions, encryption, and paid-channel restrictions can affect whether a program is recordable, even on a supported TV.
USB storage requirements vary by model
For models that support recording or timeshift, an external USB hard drive may be required. A USB port by itself does not add PVR to a TV that lacks the feature. Capacity, connection, formatting, and drive-recognition requirements differ among models and manufacturers.

| Manufacturer guidance | Storage and feature detail | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| LG USA, Timeshift guidance dated July 9, 2025 | Recommends an external hard disk of at least 80 GB. The cited guidance gives a Timeshift rewind range of 90 seconds to two hours, depending on storage capacity. | These figures are specific to that LG guidance, not universal requirements. Changing channels loses the temporary buffer. |
| Sony, 2025 USB HDD recording guide | Requires a USB HDD larger than 32 GB, connected directly to the TV without a USB hub. | Recording availability is limited to supported regions, countries, and models; recordings on the recognized drive can be played only on that TV. |
| Samsung Germany support guidance, updated June 23, 2026 | Supported TVs record broadcasts to suitable USB storage; check the model’s specifications for its requirements. | PVR must be built into the TV and cannot be added afterward. Recordings are DRM-protected and cannot be played on a computer or another TV. |
Connecting or registering a drive may require the TV to format it, which can erase existing files. Back up anything important before setup and follow the instructions for the exact model.

- Find the full model number. Look on the television’s label, in its settings, on the receipt, or on the product page. A brand or operating-system name is not enough.
- Open the manufacturer’s support page for that model. Search the specifications and manual for “PVR,” “DVR,” “recording,” “USB HDD recording,” and “Timeshift.” Samsung’s Germany support page directs buyers to model specifications and a PVR feature filter: Samsung TV and audio-video support.
- Confirm regional availability. Sony states that USB HDD recording is available only in limited regions, countries, and TV models. Check the manual for the country where the TV will be used.
- Check the signal source. Verify whether the feature records only channels received by the built-in tuner or supports another source. Do not infer that an external box, app, or HDMI input is recordable.
- Read the storage and setup rules. Confirm the required drive type and capacity, whether it must connect directly, and whether the TV will register or format it.
- Check playback restrictions. Find out whether recordings are tied to that television or can be transferred. Samsung and Sony both document playback restrictions for their supported recording setups.
What to compare when choosing a TV for recording
- Recording or timeshift: Decide whether you need saved or scheduled programs, temporary pause-and-rewind, or both.
- Compatible signal: Confirm that the TV’s tuner receives the broadcasts you want to record and that the manual supports recording them.
- Exact model and region: Feature availability can differ by model, country, and product series. Sony’s model support listings identify USB HDD recording by BRAVIA series and release year, illustrating why a broad brand-level claim is not enough.
- Drive rules: Check the exact capacity, USB connection, and setup requirements before buying a drive.
- Recording limits: Check the manual for the number of tuners, simultaneous recording limits, and scheduling details; the cited manufacturer guidance does not establish a universal limit.
- Playback portability: Determine whether recordings can be watched on another TV or device. DRM or device registration may prevent it.
Why there is no universal answer by brand
Manufacturer documentation describes features for particular models and markets, not the share of all smart TVs that include PVR. Samsung’s cited instructions are Germany-specific; LG’s Timeshift guidance is for the US; and Sony’s 2025 recording guide explicitly limits availability by region and model. An LG manual describing DVR behavior likewise demonstrates what one supported model can do, not what every smart TV can do.
