Probably—but the earlier material was not the radical usually associated with Moses Gomberg’s discovery. A 2026 historical reinterpretation argues that experiments Gomberg performed in 1898 produced crystals containing the triphenylmethyl cation, whose significance he did not recognize. His celebrated 1900 work concerned a different species: the triphenylmethyl radical.
What did Gomberg make in 1898?
A 2026 paper in the Journal of the American Chemical Society, “Gomberg’s Earlier ‘Instance of Trivalent Carbon’,” revisits experiments from 1898. Its abstract says Gomberg believed he had prepared a molecular complex of bromotriphenylmethane and two neutral iodine molecules. The paper’s authors instead report a mixture of three persistent single crystals of the triphenylmethyl cation. They argue that Gomberg had compounds involving trivalent carbon in hand before he recognized their significance.

This is a modern reinterpretation, not evidence that Gomberg knowingly isolated the triphenylmethyl radical in 1898. The distinction matters: the earlier finding concerns a positively charged cation; the famous 1900 claim concerned a radical. The abstract supports that central reinterpretation, but not further experimental detail.

Gomberg was trying to synthesize hexaphenylethane. According to the American Chemical Society’s historical account, he first reacted triphenylmethyl halides with sodium in benzene, then tried silver. The experiments produced a white crystalline powder that reacted with oxygen. To limit oxidation, he next reacted triphenylmethyl chloride with zinc under carbon dioxide. After removing the benzene, he obtained a highly reactive white solid that oxidized rapidly in air and reacted with halogens, including iodine.

Those reactions did not match what he expected from hexaphenylethane. Gomberg inferred that the product was triphenylmethyl radical—a carbon-centered species with an unpaired electron. His paper, “An Instance of Trivalent Carbon: Triphenylmethyl,” appeared in the Journal of the American Chemical Society on November 1, 1900, in volume 22, issue 11, pages 757–771. He also published in German that year, according to the ACS account.
How are the 1898 cation and 1900 radical different?
Both involve a central carbon bonded to three phenyl groups, but they are not interchangeable compounds. “Trivalent” describes the central carbon’s three bonds; charge and electron state distinguish the species in these accounts.

The 1898 account therefore moves the history of Gomberg’s contact with trivalent-carbon compounds earlier; it does not establish an early radical discovery.

At the time, organic chemists generally treated carbon as tetravalent, and carbon-centered organic radicals were disputed. Gomberg’s claim that a carbon bonded to three phenyl groups could exist as a radical challenged that expectation. The ACS describes triphenylmethyl as the first organic free radical with a measurable lifetime.

Measurable lifetime did not mean chemical inertness. Gomberg wrote: “The radical so formed is apparently stable, for it can be kept both in solution and in the dry crystalline state for weeks.” The same material reacted readily with oxygen and halogens. The ACS says the radical interpretation remained contested for nearly a decade, and free radicals did not enter mainstream organic chemistry until the 1930s.
Was there another structural puzzle?
Yes, but it is separate from the 1898 cation reinterpretation. Triphenylmethyl radical can form a dimer, and the dimer’s structure was long assigned as hexaphenylethane. A 2025 review in Chemical Society Reviews says Gomberg initially favored the correct quinoidal dimer structure, but the hexaphenylethane proposal was accepted for a long period. NMR established the correct structure in 1968, according to that review.

That later correction concerns the structure of a dimer, not whether the 1898 crystals were cation or radical. Keeping the two questions distinct avoids turning Gomberg’s complicated history into a single, oversimplified discovery date.

The ACS landmark booklet also said in 2000 that free-radical polymerization was used to produce “Nearly half the polymers we use.” That is a figure reported in a 2000 publication, not a current estimate.
