To limit what your smart TV learns about what you watch, turn off its automatic content recognition (ACR) or viewing-data setting, decline optional data agreements, and review ad-personalization and voice controls separately. The exact labels and menu paths depend on the brand, model, region, and software version. These steps address viewing information and related advertising data—not a claim that every TV records conversations or takes screenshots.
1. Turn off ACR or viewing-information collection
Automatic content recognition (ACR) is a feature that can identify content shown on a TV and use that information for services such as viewing analytics or advertising. What it can recognize depends on the platform. There is no single setting name or coverage rule for every smart TV.

LG TVs
Open the TV’s settings and look for ACR or Viewing Information controls. Review the Viewing Information Agreement and turn the feature off if you do not want that collection. LG says ACR is optional and off by default in its September 12, 2026 statement; its description says the feature may identify content from Live TV, HDMI devices, and LG Channels, but not within third-party streaming apps on LG Apps. Roku TVs
Roku’s Smart TV Experience includes the option Use info from TV inputs. Turning this off limits the ACR feature; Roku says ACR can cover streaming, antenna, and connected devices. The precise settings route can vary, so search the TV’s settings for Smart TV Experience or consult the on-screen help. Roku support: More Ways to Watch and Roku ACR Service Policy
Vizio TVs
On current Vizio OS, the documented route is All Settings > Privacy & Legal > Viewing Data. Turn off Viewing Data if you do not want the feature collecting viewing information. Samsung and other brands
For brands not covered by the current official documentation above, use the TV’s privacy menu or manual for your exact model. Search for terms such as viewing information, ACR, content recognition, or personalized recommendations; do not assume a menu path from another brand applies.

2. Decline optional data-related agreements
During setup or when an agreement prompt appears, read the agreement names rather than accepting every option automatically. LG’s US guidance identifies agreements for viewing information, voice features, and personalized advertising as optional. LG also says its Terms of Use and Privacy Policy are required for smart services such as Netflix and YouTube. Declining every agreement may therefore limit access to some services; it is not the same as declining only optional viewing-data collection. LG’s agreement guidance

Agreement names and availability can differ by model and market. If you declined something by mistake, reopen the TV’s user-agreement or privacy menu to review the choices available on that device.
3. Treat ad personalization and voice controls as separate choices
Turning off ACR does not automatically change every other data feature. On LG, interest-based advertising and voice recognition are separate from the Viewing Information Agreement. Review each control independently if you want to limit those functions too. LG’s descriptions are specific to its services and may vary by market. LG’s privacy statement

Disabling personalized advertising generally changes how ads are tailored; it does not mean the TV will show no ads. Likewise, turning off a voice feature is not a substitute for disabling viewing-information collection.

Roku’s ACR policy says information collected while its feature was enabled is retained after the feature is turned off. Disabling ACR should therefore be understood as stopping future collection or use under that feature, not as a request to erase previously collected information. Roku ACR Service Policy

Do not assume another platform’s toggle deletes historical data unless that platform’s policy says so. A settings change and a data-deletion request are different actions.
5. Recheck privacy settings after setup and software changes
Smart-TV menus and agreement prompts can change across models, software versions, and regions. After setting up a TV or installing an update, revisit its privacy menu and verify the relevant choices remain as you intended. For LG, its September 12, 2026 statement also notes that connected products can have security vulnerabilities; that is a software-security point, not evidence that ACR is enabled or collecting data.
