Smart Scopes: What They Are and Why I Love Mine

Smart scopes automate target tracking and image stacking for astrophotography. Here’s what they do, why EarthSky’s Marcy Curran enjoys hers, and what to check before buying.

A smart scope is an automated digital telescope that makes capturing and stacking astrophotos accessible through a phone or tablet app. In her October 6, 2026, EarthSky article, Marcy Curran explains why she enjoys using hers: it can find and track a target while the app gathers images that build into a more detailed view.

What is a smart scope?

A smart scope, also called a smart telescope, is an all-in-one digital instrument designed mainly for astrophotography and viewing images on a screen. Unlike a traditional telescope experience centered on looking through an eyepiece, you control the scope and view its results through an app on a phone or tablet.

Curran describes a workflow in which the user selects a target, the scope aligns and tracks it automatically, and the app captures successive images. The scope stacks those images to bring out detail. Images can be saved and exported for further processing, and some models let users schedule a target and capture window in advance.

Why does Curran love using hers?

Curran’s enthusiasm is about the experience, not a model-by-model test. She likes making astrophotos without having to manage every alignment and tracking adjustment herself. Her own scope has a 2-megapixel camera, a detail she describes as part of her personal setup; EarthSky does not identify the model.

Portability is another part of the appeal. Curran contrasts a compact smart scope with larger telescopes weighing 70–80 pounds (32–36 kg), an illustrative comparison rather than a market-wide statistic. She says her scope’s boxy shape and short tripod make it awkward to carry, so she uses a padded tote.

Can you use a smart scope in a big city?

Curran says smart scopes can be used in cities, and that filters on many models may help with light pollution. That is not a quantified comparison of city and dark-sky performance: the EarthSky article does not establish how much a filter improves results or how different locations compare. Results will depend on the scope, filter, target, and observing conditions.

How much do smart scopes cost?

EarthSky’s October 2026 article describes prices broadly as ranging from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars. It is not a dated survey of current model prices. Curran points to camera resolution as one meaningful price distinction, but the article does not compare named models or establish their current specifications and prices.

If you are comparing scopes, check current manufacturer information for camera resolution, app workflow, image export, portability and carrying setup, tripod or mount requirements, and included or compatible filters. Those are practical questions to investigate, not a tested ranking of products.

Can a smart scope photograph the Sun and Moon?

Curran says smart scopes can image the Sun and Moon, and that her own scope came with a solar filter. That experience does not establish that a particular filter fits another scope or that any setup is safe for solar viewing. Before attempting solar imaging, verify the exact scope and filter compatibility and follow the manufacturer’s solar-use instructions.
