Choose a fitness watch if workout guidance and GPS matter more; choose a general smartwatch if you want apps, communications and closer phone integration. The right fit depends on your phone, activities, comfort and tolerance for charging—not a universal ranking.
Band or watch: which kind of wearable fits?
A smart ring keeps its information off your wrist and typically has no large screen to interact with. Wrist-worn alternatives make a different trade: they can be easier to check during the day, but their screen, controls and bulk may be more noticeable. Before comparing models, decide how much interaction you actually want.

| Type | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Fitness band | Low-profile daily tracking for activity and wellness, with simple on-device information | Usually fewer training and smartwatch capabilities than a watch; GPS may depend on a paired phone |
| Fitness watch | People who prioritize workouts, training tools and, on some models, onboard GPS | Can be larger than a band and may offer fewer apps or communication features than a general smartwatch |
| General smartwatch | People who want apps, notifications, phone integration and communications alongside activity tracking | More features and screen interaction can mean more frequent charging than a training-focused watch |
These are category tendencies, not guarantees: check the specific model’s phone requirements, location features, workout functions and battery conditions.

The compromises are worth weighing against a ring: its display is monochrome, and Tom’s Guide says it lacks onboard GPS. Location features may therefore rely on the paired phone. Tom’s Guide describes it as comfortable for 24/7 wear and reports positive results in its own sleep and fitness testing; that editorial assessment is not evidence of clinical accuracy. Amazfit Band 7: another slim-band option
The Amazfit Band 7 appears in editorial comparison coverage as another potential band alternative. That mention alone does not establish current availability, price or compatibility in your country. Check the manufacturer or local seller for the exact model and confirm it supports your phone before buying. Tom’s Guide’s Fitbit alternatives comparison.
When does a fitness watch make more sense?
If workouts and training guidance matter more than keeping the wearable as unobtrusive as possible, a fitness watch is a stronger category to consider. For the Garmin Forerunner 165, Tom’s Guide highlights training tools and longer battery estimates than the Apple Watch SE 3. Its comparison reports up to 11 days for the Forerunner 165, but this is a review estimate, not guaranteed runtime; settings and use affect battery life. Training focus does not automatically mean more general smartwatch capability. The same comparison describes the Forerunner 165 as having fewer smartwatch features and communications than the Apple Watch SE 3. If you mainly want guided training, that trade may suit you; if you want a broader set of connected functions, look at general smartwatches instead.
When should you choose a general smartwatch?
Choose a general smartwatch if apps, communications, notifications and phone integration are as important as activity tracking. Tom’s Guide characterizes the Apple Watch SE 3 as stronger than the Forerunner 165 in smartwatch features and connectivity. Its comparison gives a roughly 18-hour battery estimate in standard mode, versus up to 11 days for the Garmin in that review. These are editorial estimates, not guaranteed runtimes; charging needs depend on settings and use. Tom’s Guide’s Forerunner 165 vs Apple Watch SE 3 comparison.
Check compatibility before choosing: a watch’s phone integration is useful only if it works with your phone and the features you want are available for your setup. Product details and availability can also vary by market. For example, the Google Store UK catalog listed Fitbit Charge 6, Inspire 3, Versa 4, Sense 2, Pixel Watch 4, Pixel Watch 5 and Fitbit Air when accessed; that list establishes the range shown in the UK store, not availability elsewhere. How to compare the details that matter to you
People looking for alternatives to Fitbit often ask about sleep tracking, steps, heart rate, workouts, battery life, smart features, weight tracking and food logging. Those are useful criteria to compare, but the availability and depth of any one feature depend on the device. Start with the needs that would change your daily use:

What wearable readings can—and cannot—tell you
Consumer wearables can provide activity and wellness information, but do not treat their readings as a diagnosis or as a substitute for medical advice. Garmin states of the vívosmart 5: “This is not a medical device and is not intended for use in the diagnosis or monitoring of any medical condition.” That disclaimer is specific to Garmin’s product page, and the same caution is appropriate when interpreting consumer wearable measurements generally.
