Not on their own. An app can make an allergy request easier to communicate, but the available official documentation does not show that AI independently verifies a restaurant’s ingredients, controls kitchen preparation, or prevents allergen cross-contact. For a serious food allergy, treat the app as a handoff—not a safety guarantee—and rely on current information from the restaurant before ordering.
What can an AI food delivery app actually do?
A delivery app may use automation or AI to filter menus, display dietary labels, or pass a request to a restaurant. Those features can help you find options and make your needs visible. They do not establish that a dish is safe for a particular person.

The official Uber Eats help materials reviewed here describe an item-level allergy request that is shown to the merchant. They do not document independent verification of ingredient lists, substitutions, or kitchen practices by AI. The available evidence also does not establish controlled safety outcomes showing that AI features reduce allergic reactions. This is a limit of what those materials demonstrate, not proof that no service uses AI behind the scenes.

A filter, menu description, restaurant badge, or accepted order is therefore not a substitute for confirming that the restaurant can accommodate your specific need.

How Uber Eats documents its allergy-request workflow
Uber Eats’ instructions are one documented example, not a description of every delivery service. Labels and availability may differ by market, restaurant participation, and app version.
- Find a possible option. Use the dietary filter to locate merchants with listed options. A filter helps narrow the search; it does not verify a particular dish’s ingredients or preparation.
- Attach the allergy to the item. Select the dish, open its Allergy Requests section, choose the relevant allergen, and apply the request to that item. Uber advises customers to review the request in the cart and says not to put allergy instructions in the generic Special Instructions field. Its customer allergy instructions explain that generic notes may be followed, but the platform and merchant are not responsible for them.
- Wait for the restaurant’s response if it cannot fulfill the request. Uber’s customer help says the merchant must notify you when it cannot accommodate the request. The documented flow gives you ten minutes to respond before automatic cancellation. Check the current in-app instructions rather than assuming this timing or workflow applies to every market or version.
- Contact the restaurant about anything unclear. Uber advises calling the restaurant with allergy questions. Ask about the ingredients and preparation of the specific item, including cross-contact concerns.
On the merchant side, Uber says restaurants can enable Allergy Requests, with selected allergens highlighted on the order card and receipt. Its merchant FAQ says a restaurant can review a request before accepting, fulfill it according to its food-safety practices, or tell the customer it cannot and cancel. Uber’s separate allergy-friendly program FAQ describes similar expectations for listed restaurants. These are platform workflows and expectations; they do not certify that every participating order is prepared safely.
Why an allergy request is not the same as allergy control
Ingredients and preparation both matter
In the United States, the FDA recognizes nine major food allergens: milk, eggs, fish, Crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybeans, and sesame. Sesame became the ninth major allergen under U.S. law on January 1, 2023. The FDA’s food allergy overview explains that packaged-food allergen labeling rules generally do not cover most unpackaged foods sold at retail or food-service establishments. For a restaurant order, you may need current restaurant-specific ingredient and preparation information rather than relying on a standardized packaged-food label.
Cross-contact can happen without an ingredient being intentionally added
The FDA defines cross-contact as the inadvertent introduction of a major food allergen into food. Shared utensils, surfaces, equipment, or preparation steps may matter even when the allergen is not listed as an ingredient. An app message cannot, by itself, establish that those risks were controlled.

Restaurant practices are a real part of the risk
The CDC reports that about one in three people with food allergies say they have had a reaction in a restaurant. In the restaurant studies summarized on the CDC’s food allergy reactions page, more than half of interviewed staff had never received food-allergy training, and most restaurants in the study lacked separate areas and equipment for preparing and cooking allergen-free food. These findings describe restaurant practices in the referenced studies; they are not a delivery-app failure rate or a current census of all restaurants.
The FDA, USDA, CDC, and Conference for Food Protection have also collaborated on best practices for third-party delivery services. The FDA says the guidance addresses vulnerabilities such as the last mile, packaging, temperature control, contamination, and allergen control. It is food-safety guidance, not an AI validation standard or certification of an individual app or restaurant. See the FDA’s overview of online delivery best practices.

- Use the app’s dedicated, item-level allergy field if it offers one; do not assume a general note or dietary filter carries the same information.
- Before checkout, confirm the request is attached to the correct item in the cart.
- Contact the restaurant directly. Ask whether it can accommodate the specific allergy and whether it can address cross-contact during preparation.
- If the restaurant says it cannot accommodate the request, or cannot give a clear answer, choose another restaurant or skip the item. A refusal is useful information, not a problem to work around by relying on the app’s label.
For dietary restrictions that are preferences rather than allergies, filters and item notes may help communicate what you want to avoid. But if a restriction has medical consequences, treat it with the same care as an allergy request: confirm the specific dish and preparation with the restaurant instead of relying on a label alone.
What this evidence does—and does not—show
The documented features support a practical conclusion: an app can structure and pass along a request, and a restaurant can respond that it cannot fulfill it. They do not show that AI independently checks a restaurant’s live ingredient inventory, tracks substitutions, observes food preparation, or measures whether an order is safe for a particular customer. The available official materials also do not support ranking delivery platforms by allergy safety or claiming that any delivery method is universally safe or unsafe.
