A smart relay can add connected control behind an existing switch, so familiar physical control remains part of the setup. It is a practical retrofit option—not a universal fix—and the right model depends on the circuit, load, wiring, and automation platform.
Why a smart home can feel harder than a conventional one
Conventional lighting has a simple interaction: someone reaches for the wall switch. Connected lighting can add useful scheduling, remote access, and automation, but those features can also introduce extra steps. If an ordinary action requires an app or a hub, or if a wall control has been replaced with an unfamiliar interface, the home may feel less convenient to the people who use it.

That is a usability concern, not a proven universal result. The official product and integration sources cited here describe device capabilities; they do not provide a comparative study showing that smart homes are generally harder to use.

What a smart relay changes
A retrofit relay is installed as part of a compatible electrical circuit and adds connected control to the existing setup. With an appropriate wiring arrangement and configuration, the regular physical switch can still provide an input while a supported platform can control the relay too. This can preserve a familiar way to operate a light without giving up connected features.

That continuity is not automatic for every relay or installation. A device’s terminals, supported circuit, switch configuration, and load all matter. Before choosing a product, check its model-specific instructions and verify that its physical-switch behavior suits the people who will use it.
Does a smart relay need a neutral wire?
It depends on the model. Shelly says that most of its relays need a neutral, while identifying a limited number of exceptions. One listed lighting-control example is the Shelly 1L Gen3, which the manufacturer describes as able to operate using a live wire without a neutral at the device. That is a model-specific capability, not a rule for smart relays generally.
Do not infer wiring compatibility from a product category or from a different relay’s instructions. Check whether neutral is present at the intended installation point, then compare the actual circuit and load with the exact model’s documentation.

- This smart wifi module with mini design suits for wall switch box,and easily hide it into your hidden wall switch box of your traditional switch without any influences on your original decoration style to make it smart.More importantly, your traditional switch and this smart module can work independently under non-interfering mode.
- The mini wifi switch is compatible with AC and DC power sources, working voltage: AC90-250V 50/60Hz, or DC15-250V.Support 1 Way or 2 Way (2 switches control 1 light); simply connect to 1 of the 2 switches and convert the connected device into a smart one (for 2-way circuit)
- The MINI WiFi Switch is compatible with Amazon Alexa ( Amazon Echo/Echo Dot/Amazon Tap) and Google Home Assistant. It allows you to use your voice to control home devices and enjoy hands-free experience.
- Take full control of connected appliances with timers, schedules and countdown (1/5/30 mins, 1 hour, etc.) with the app; share control with family and friends for added convenience
- Control with your smart phone via Smart Life/Tuya app without a separate hub.【NOTE】The router must be 2.4GHz (5.0 GHz WiFi is not supported), but there is no limitation for smart phone network (2G/3G/4G/WiFi network is ok).
What to check before choosing a retrofit relay
Wiring and installation point
Confirm the wiring available where the relay will be installed and whether the device supports that arrangement. A no-neutral design may make a retrofit possible in some locations, but it does not establish that the relay is suitable for every circuit or enclosure.
Bulb and load compatibility
For its stated bulb use case, Shelly says the 1L Gen3 requires a Bypass 1L/2L Gen3 to control bulbs greater than 5 W. Treat that as a product compatibility specification, not a general threshold for other relays. Check the manufacturer’s current instructions for the chosen bulb or load and any required accessory before installation.
Physical switch behavior
Work out how the wall switch will operate with the relay and how household members will use it. Keeping a physical input can retain familiar control, but the result depends on the circuit and configuration. The documentation does not establish identical behavior across every device setup or during every network or power interruption.

Platform integration
Home Assistant’s Shelly integration documents automatic discovery as well as manual setup. Shelly relay outputs are added as switch entities by default; in supported cases, users can configure a relay as a light entity. Integration support explains how devices can appear in Home Assistant, but it does not mean every configuration is automatic.

Relay installation involves household wiring, so use the exact product’s safety documentation and follow local requirements. A safety guide for the Shelly Plus 1 advises caution and installation by a qualified electrician; that guide is for a different model and should not be treated as the 1L Gen3’s installation instructions. If you are unsure about the circuit or the work required, have a qualified electrician assess it.

| Option | Physical-control question | Fit to check |
|---|---|---|
| Retrofit relay | Can the existing wall switch remain a usable input? | Circuit wiring, neutral requirements, load compatibility, enclosure fit, configuration, and platform support. |
| Replacement smart switch | Does the replacement preserve an intuitive wall control for the household? | The circuit’s wiring and the exact device’s requirements; verify against the manufacturer’s documentation. |
| Smart bulb | Will the bulb remain powered and controllable in the intended setup? | Bulb compatibility and how the existing wall switch will be used; verify against the bulb’s documentation. |
A relay is worth considering when retaining a familiar physical switch matters and a compatible device fits the wiring and load. A different approach may better fit a circuit or household preference; compare the actual installation and controls rather than assuming that one category is easier for everyone.
How Home Assistant handles Shelly relays
Home Assistant documents a Shelly integration that can discover devices or be configured manually. Relay outputs appear as switch entities by default, with light-entity configuration available in supported cases. That gives users a documented route to expose relay control in a home-automation interface, while leaving device setup and circuit behavior dependent on the particular installation.
In a July 29, 2025 announcement, Home Assistant author Miranda Bishop described retrofit switches and relays as a way to make fixtures and other devices controllable in new ways. That is the platform’s characterization, not an independent usability test.
