To connect to a hidden Wi-Fi network, you need its exact network name (SSID), security type, and password or key. On Windows, use the built-in Wi-Fi settings to add or connect to the network and enter those details when prompted. A hidden SSID is a network name that the router does not broadcast in ordinary Wi-Fi listings; hiding it does not make the network secure or invisible.
What “hidden Wi-Fi” means
This guide is about a hidden or non-broadcast SSID: a router or access point is configured not to advertise its network name in ordinary Wi-Fi lists. It is not about the separate 802.11 “hidden-station” problem, a radio contention issue.

Microsoft describes non-broadcast profiles in its Non-Broadcast profile sample. Devices can still detect transmissions associated with the network, so suppressing the name is not the same as making the network undetectable.

What you need before connecting
- The exact SSID: Get the network name from its administrator or router documentation. SSIDs are case-sensitive and can be up to 32 characters, according to Microsoft’s 802.11 SSID reference.
- The security or authentication type: Ask which mode the access point uses so you can select a matching option if the device asks.
- The password or network key: You must be authorized to use the network and have its correct key.
Connect using Windows
Windows includes built-in flows for connecting to Wi-Fi and setting up a wireless network. The exact prompts and labels can vary by Windows version and device.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
- Open Windows Wi-Fi settings and choose the built-in option to add or connect to a network. Microsoft’s guides cover setting up a wireless network and connecting to a Wi-Fi network.
- Enter the exact SSID, including capitalization, when asked for the network name.
- Select the security type that matches the access point if Windows requests it, then enter the password or key.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to save the network profile and connect.
For other computers and phones, the screens and labels differ by operating system and version. Use the device maker’s instructions for adding a network manually rather than assuming Windows steps apply everywhere.
Troubleshoot a failed connection
- Check the SSID: Compare every character, including capitalization, with the name supplied by the administrator.
- Confirm the security mode: The selected authentication type must match the access point. Check router or device documentation if you are unsure.
- Re-enter the key: Verify the password with the network administrator; do not assume a connection failure means the SSID is wrong.
- Check compatibility: Older client devices may not support newer security modes. Microsoft recommends WPA3 when both the router and PC support it; verify your equipment’s documentation.
- Consult the device and router instructions: Menu labels and available settings vary across manufacturers, operating systems, and versions.
Microsoft notes that non-broadcast profiles may cause connection or roaming problems for some clients. Its Wi-Fi and your home layout guidance also discusses factors that affect wireless connections.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Does hiding the SSID improve security?
No. Hiding a network name is not access control: it does not prevent unauthorized access by itself, nor does it stop nearby observers from detecting the network. Apple Support states: “Hiding the network name doesn’t conceal the network from being detected or secure it against unauthorised access.” Apple’s Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points recommends disabling hidden-network mode and using appropriate security settings instead.
There is also a privacy tradeoff. Apple says the way devices search for and connect to hidden networks can expose identifying information about the device and the networks it uses. For protection, change default router credentials and use a strong network key; use WPA3 if your router and client device both support it.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Hidden SSID versus Wi-Fi hotspot settings
A hidden SSID is about whether a network name is broadcast. A hotspot or access-point setting governs how a device provides Wi-Fi; it is not a synonym for hiding a network. Android’s documentation describes Wi-Fi hotspot behavior in its Wi-Fi hotspot (Soft AP) material. The right steps depend on whether you are joining an existing network or configuring a device to provide one.
