Smart Plugs: What They Do and When One Is Useful

A smart plug adds remote switching and, on some models, schedules, automation, or energy monitoring. Learn when those features help and what to check before connecting an appliance.

A smart plug lets you switch a suitable ordinary appliance remotely, run it on a schedule, or include it in a smart-home automation. It is most useful when the appliance’s normal operation is simply on or off—such as a lamp—and when remote control or timed switching solves a real problem. Some models also report energy use, but that feature is not universal, and a smart plug does not guarantee a lower electricity bill.

What can you use a smart plug for?

A smart plug sits between a wall outlet and an appliance, allowing the plug to interrupt or restore power. Depending on the model and control system, you may be able to operate it from an app, set a schedule or timer, or make it part of an automation. The Australian government describes smart plugs as a way to make some conventional appliances remotely controllable, with simple on/off devices such as lamps as a common fit (Australian government smart-home guidance).

  • Control a lamp remotely: Switch it on or off without reaching the outlet, provided the lamp’s physical switch is left in the position that allows it to operate when power is supplied.
  • Set a schedule or timer: Have a compatible device receive power at particular times, or turn it off after a set interval.
  • Include a device in an automation: A compatible controller may switch a plug according to a schedule, occupancy, or other configured condition. The available triggers depend on the plug and system.

These functions are useful only when cutting and restoring power is an appropriate way to control the appliance. A smart plug does not replace an appliance’s own controls or a required shutdown sequence.

Can a smart plug help you save energy?

It can help you manage when a compatible load runs. For example, a schedule may prevent a simple device from receiving power at times when you do not want it operating. Home energy management systems can also coordinate loads around occupancy or time-of-use pricing. That is a possible way to manage consumption, not proof that buying a particular plug will reduce a particular household’s bill.

The Australian government notes that automation equipment adds standby power and recommends considering the system’s consumption. Net savings, if any, depend on the appliance, how it is used, the electricity tariff, the schedule, and the plug’s own standby draw. The cited sources establish no general savings amount, percentage, or payback period for a single smart plug.

What does energy monitoring tell you?

On models that include it, energy monitoring reports power or energy use for the connected load. That can help answer how much electricity a device is using, as measured and presented by that plug. Monitoring is not the same as automatically reducing consumption: it provides information, while any change depends on what you do with it.

Monitoring is model-specific. For example, TP-Link lists real-time and historical energy monitoring for its US-market Kasa EP25P2 smart plug; that listing is not evidence that every smart plug—or every product in the Kasa range—has the feature. ENERGY STAR discusses plug-load monitoring and control as one component of a broader Smart Home Energy Management System package, not as a label applied to every plug (ENERGY STAR Smart Home Energy Management Systems criteria).

What should you check before choosing one?

  • Appliance and electrical rating: Check the exact plug’s rated load against the appliance’s requirements. Confirm that switching power off and on is safe for the way the appliance works.
  • Control system and connectivity: Verify compatibility with the app, assistant, controller, and network you plan to use. Smart-home devices may depend on Wi-Fi or another compatible control setup; the Australian government also notes that network capacity and configuration can affect how devices work together.
  • Where features are available: Check that the function you want works in your chosen controller, not only in the manufacturer’s app. D-Link says its referenced Matter plug offers basic on/off control through Matter, while advanced monitoring and threshold features are available in its own app (D-Link product support FAQ).
  • Energy reporting: If usage data is the reason you are buying, confirm that the exact model explicitly supports energy monitoring.
  • Regional model and approval: Check the model number, outlet type, voltage, local approval, and availability for your country. The cited EP25P2 page is for the US product and lists UL certification for that model; those details should not be assumed for other regional versions.

When is using a smart plug unsafe or unsuitable?

Follow the instructions and load limits for the exact plug. A smart plug can cut power, but that does not make unattended switching safe for every appliance or ensure that the appliance shuts down properly.

Bosch’s instructions for its Smart Home plug warn against unattended switching of devices such as irons where it could cause fire or other damage, and against using that product with a power strip or extension cable. Bosch also cautions that certain electronic power supplies draw high inrush current, which can cause premature wear or unreliable switching (Bosch Smart Home plug product support). Those are product-specific instructions, not a universal statement that every smart plug has identical limits.

Before connecting a heater, motor, compressor, medical device, safety-critical appliance, or equipment that requires a particular shutdown sequence, check the plug’s rating and both manufacturers’ instructions. If the guidance does not clearly establish that the proposed use is safe, do not rely on remote switching to control it.

When is a smart plug worth having?

Consider one when you have a compatible appliance that behaves predictably when power is switched, and you have a clear use for remote access, a schedule, an automation, or model-specific energy readings. If you only need those functions for a device that must remain under direct supervision or needs a careful shutdown, a smart plug is the wrong control method. It also adds another connected device and some standby consumption, so weigh the convenience against your system’s requirements and the plug’s own specifications.
