For an automation that turns a suitable plug-in device on or off, a smart plug is the direct choice: it switches power to the connected load. A smart speaker adds hands-free voice control and, on some models, can also act as a Matter hub. They are often most useful together, with the plug doing the switching and the speaker providing an interface.
What each device does in an automation
| Question | Smart plug | Smart speaker |
|---|---|---|
| Main role | Switches power to a suitable connected plug-in device. Alexa lists on/off plugs and on/off control among its Matter categories. Amazon’s Matter device categories | Provides voice interaction; some models can also be a Matter hub. It does not itself switch an outlet. Google’s Matter preparation guidance |
| Best fit | Scheduling or including the on/off state of a compatible lamp or other suitable plug-in load in a routine. | Hands-free commands, spoken routines, and—if the particular model supports it—Matter hub functions. |
| Works alone? | Not necessarily: operation depends on its ecosystem and setup. Supported Matter devices can be controlled through a platform app and routines without requiring voice commands. Google’s Matter device-control guidance | Can control compatible linked devices, but needs a controllable device such as a smart plug to switch an outlet. |
| Check before setup | Platform compatibility, Matter and hub requirements, Wi-Fi or Thread needs, and whether the connected load is electrically suitable. | Assistant ecosystem, exact model’s Matter hub support, and support for the routines you want. |
Which should you choose?
Choose a smart plug to automate a plug-in device
If the goal is to turn an appropriate lamp on or off on a schedule or as part of a routine, the smart plug is the component that performs the switching. Keep expectations to on/off control unless that specific plug and connected device support additional functions.

Choose a smart speaker for hands-free control
If you want to start a compatible routine or control linked devices by speaking, a smart speaker supplies the voice interface. Whether it can also serve as a Matter hub depends on the speaker model and platform.

Use both when you want voice control of an outlet
A speaker can accept the voice command, while a smart plug switches the connected load. The exact speaker, plug, app, and home network must support the arrangement; buying either category alone does not guarantee the full setup.

Do you need a smart speaker or hub for a smart plug?
Not always. Google documents controlling supported Matter devices through its Home app and automated routines as well as by voice. However, app setup and remote control still have platform requirements, so check the instructions for the plug and ecosystem you plan to use.
For Google’s documented Matter setup, requirements include a Google Account, home Wi-Fi, IPv6 enabled on the home router, a Matter-enabled hub, and a compatible device. Thread devices also need a Thread Border Router. A Google smart speaker can be one type of Wi-Fi-only Matter hub, but support varies by model and network configuration. A practical checklist before buying or configuring
- Decide whether the task is outlet switching, voice access, or both.
- Confirm the plug supports your chosen platform and the connected device is appropriate for its electrical rating and on/off behavior.
- Check whether the setup requires Matter, a hub, Thread Border Router, IPv6, or a particular Wi-Fi band.
- If you want more than on/off control, verify that both the plug and appliance explicitly support the function.
- For voice control, confirm that the speaker model, plug, app, and network work together; do not assume that every smart speaker is a Matter hub.
