What separates a keypad deadbolt from a smart lock?
A keypad deadbolt lets you enter a code rather than use a key for every entry. The exact model may also have a keyed cylinder or other features, so check its specifications and setup instructions rather than assuming all keypad locks work alike.

Choose a smart lock when you need connected access
A smart lock is worth considering when you need to manage access while away, control the lock through an app, or connect it to a supported smart-home system. Confirm the exact model works with your preferred app or platform and supports the remote features you need. Do not pay for connectivity you will not use
If you expect to operate the lock locally with a code and do not need app-based access, connected features may add setup and account upkeep without solving a problem for you. Confirm whether a prospective keypad model is truly offline; do not infer that from the word “keypad.”

Plan for low batteries and emergency entry
Battery warnings and backup access are model-specific. Schlage says its electronic locks offer backup options such as a physical key or a jumpstart port, depending on the model. Does a smart lock provide better security?
“Smart” describes connected capabilities; it does not, by itself, demonstrate stronger resistance to forced entry, picking, or electronic compromise. The available manufacturer descriptions and general connected-device guidance do not establish that smart locks or traditional keypad deadbolts are categorically more secure. Compare the individual deadbolt’s documented construction and certification evidence, and consider installation quality rather than treating the category name as a security rating.
For a connected lock, the Federal Trade Commission advises changing default credentials, using available device-security features, applying updates, and disabling remote management if you do not need it.
