Smart Lights Keep Going Offline? Try a 2.4 GHz IoT Network

Some Wi-Fi smart bulbs need 2.4 GHz. Learn when a dedicated IoT network or separated bands may help—and what to check if lights still go offline.

If your Wi-Fi smart bulbs keep dropping offline, check whether they require 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and whether your router’s combined-band or mesh settings are getting in the way. A dedicated 2.4 GHz IoT network—or temporarily separating the 2.4 and 5 GHz network names—can help with setup and connection problems. It is a troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed fix: power, signal, security compatibility, local device discovery and internet access can also cause lights to appear offline.

Why a 2.4 GHz network can help

Some smart bulbs work only on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. Routers that use one network name for multiple bands may steer devices between them, while mesh systems can also guide clients between access points. That can complicate setup when a bulb expects 2.4 GHz but the setup phone is connected on another band.

Google says Nest Wifi and Google Wifi use a single name across radio bands and band steering; some smart-home devices that support only 2.4 GHz may require the phone to use that band during setup. TP-Link similarly notes that many IoT setup apps expect the phone and device to be on the same band. These are vendor-specific explanations, not proof that band steering causes every offline-light problem.

Start by checking the Wi-Fi requirements for the exact bulb model. For example, LIFX documents router compatibility requirements for its lights, and Xiaomi’s offline guidance applies to its Xiaomi Smart LED Bulb (White and Color). Do not assume that every smart light has the same band or security requirements.

TP-Link AC1200 WiFi Router Dual Band Wireless Internet Router (Archer A54)
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
  • Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks

Try the least disruptive network change first

  1. Confirm the bulb has power and a usable signal. Make sure the light is switched on and within range of the router or mesh node. Restarting the router can help rule out a temporary connection problem.
  2. Check the bulb’s Wi-Fi and security requirements. Look up the exact model’s instructions. If it is 2.4 GHz-only, make sure the bulb can join a compatible 2.4 GHz network and that the phone can use that same compatible network during setup.
  3. Try a dedicated IoT network, if your router offers one. Router makers use different menus and feature names, and availability depends on model and firmware. TP-Link documents IoT-network options for supported Deco systems; NETGEAR documents an IoT band option for its Orbi WiFi 6E System. Follow the instructions for your exact router rather than assuming a menu path applies to every model.
  4. If there is no IoT network, temporarily separate the band names. If your router supports separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz SSIDs, use the 2.4 GHz network for the bulb setup. Treat this as a diagnostic change; restore the original network configuration if it does not help or once setup is complete and the manufacturer’s guidance allows it.
  5. Test the light before changing anything else. If it stays connected, note which change helped. If not, restore temporary settings and investigate other causes one at a time.

If the light still goes offline, check other causes

Band selection is only one possible issue. LIFX lists several router settings that can affect its lights; exact requirements vary by product, so consult the bulb maker’s current compatibility guidance before changing settings.

  • Wi-Fi security mode: The LIFX guidance specifies WPA2-PSK (AES) and advises against WPA3-only for its lights. Do not disable Wi-Fi security; use a compatible secured mode supported by both the router and bulb.
  • Legacy 2.4 GHz compatibility: Check whether the router’s wireless mode and channel configuration support the bulb’s requirements. LIFX identifies legacy Wi-Fi mode, channel and channel width as possible factors.
  • Mesh roaming and steering: A bulb that struggles as it moves between mesh access points may be affected by roaming features. On supported Deco systems, TP-Link suggests considering High Capacity/Stable mode when there are more than 20 smart-home devices or when devices drop; it also suggests trying Fast Roaming off for connection trouble or Beamforming off for disconnections or timeouts. Those options are model-dependent, and the “more than 20” recommendation is TP-Link’s guidance for its own mode, not a universal device limit.
  • Local discovery: Client isolation or multicast filtering can prevent devices on the network from finding one another, even when they have Wi-Fi access.
  • Internet access: Filtered DNS or firewall rules can interfere with a bulb’s cloud connection. A light may therefore seem offline in its app even when its local Wi-Fi connection is not the only problem.

Change one setting at a time and write down its original value so you can reverse the change. Avoid broadly disabling isolation, filtering or other protections: adjust only what the bulb or router maker identifies as necessary, and restore the original setting if the test does not resolve the problem.

Refresh or reconnect the bulb only after checking the network

If the router checks do not resolve the issue, refresh the bulb’s app and follow the manufacturer’s model-specific offline instructions. Xiaomi’s guidance for the Xiaomi Smart LED Bulb (White and Color) includes restarting the router and, if needed, resetting and reconnecting the bulb. A reset can require setup again, so use it for the model covered by that guidance rather than treating it as a universal procedure.
