A phone is the more practical default for navigating between delivery stops. A small last-mile study found that handheld map-and-instruction navigation better supported accurate navigation and usability than an in-sight display. Smart glasses may help on the walk from a parked vehicle to a doorstep by keeping simple directions and package details in view, but current evidence does not show that they are universally safer or more accurate.
Which is more practical for navigation?
It depends on the delivery stage, but the phone has the stronger case as an all-purpose navigation tool. A map gives a driver route context that is easier to inspect when stopped, while glasses can present brief cues without requiring the courier to hold a phone during the walking leg. Neither device should be treated as a reason to look at a visual display while driving; follow local traffic and workplace rules.

The most relevant direct comparison involved walking and cycling tasks, not drivers completing van routes. In that study, handheld map-and-instruction navigation better supported accurate navigation and scored higher for perceived usability. The in-sight display had an advantage in acknowledgement of more hazards, so the results do not establish a winner on every measure.
How the choice changes across a delivery
Driving between stops
A phone can provide a full map and route context, but consulting any visual display while moving can compete for attention. In an on-road study summarized by the RAC Foundation, 16 drivers compared smart-glasses navigation, verbal directions and satnav. The study, completed in September 2015, found no reduction in driver performance from smart-glasses visual distraction compared with verbal navigation or satnav. Participants nevertheless preferred verbal instructions, followed by satnav; glasses were least preferred. The sample was small and the study predates current products. RAC Foundation: “Eyes on the road”.

Parking and finding the package
After parking, a phone’s map can help confirm the location and route context before the courier starts walking. Glasses could reduce the need to handle a phone while locating a package or checking brief instructions, but the cited independent studies do not compare package-finding performance or a full delivery workflow.
Walking to the door
This is where glasses have a plausible practical advantage: a short turn cue can remain in view while the courier’s hands are occupied. Amazon says its delivery-specific glasses are designed to activate once an associate has safely parked, show package details, guide the walking leg with turn-by-turn directions and support proof of delivery. Amazon also describes a vest-mounted controller, swappable battery, emergency button, and support for prescription and light-adjusting lenses. These are company descriptions of its system, not independent evidence that it improves safety or performance. Amazon’s delivery-glasses announcement, October 22, 2025.

What the studies actually show
| Evidence | Task and sample | What it supports | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Applied Ergonomics, 2020 | 24 participants completed four last-mile navigation tasks: two cycling and two walking. They used either a handheld map with instructions or an in-sight monocular display with text and arrows. | Handheld navigation better supported accurate navigation and had higher perceived usability; the in-sight display supported acknowledgement of more hazards. | Performance in delivery jobs over full shifts, van driving, or broad safety outcomes. |
| RAC Foundation summary of an on-road study, completed September 2015 | 16 drivers compared smart-glasses navigation, verbal directions and satnav. | The summary reports no reduction in driver performance from glasses’ visual distraction compared with verbal navigation or satnav; drivers preferred verbal directions, then satnav, and rated glasses least preferred. | How current glasses perform across delivery fleets or whether they reduce crashes. |
| Applied Ergonomics, 2018 | Simulated-driving study comparing responses to text messages through a smartphone and Google Glass—not a navigation trial. | Participants responded more quickly through Google Glass. The authors cautioned that earlier engagement with distracting tasks could offset potential wearable-display benefits. | That navigation glasses cause more crashes, or that phones are safer for navigation. |
| Amazon company announcement, October 22, 2025 | Description of a delivery-specific glasses system; Amazon says hundreds of Delivery Associates gave feedback on early versions. | The company describes package details, walking directions after parking and delivery workflow features. | Independent effectiveness, broad deployment, retail availability, or measured productivity and safety gains. |
Do glasses reduce distraction?
Not by definition. A display in the field of view may reduce the need to look down, but it can still draw attention. The 2018 simulated-driving study concerned text-message responses rather than navigation. Its authors’ conclusion was: “Results suggest that a willingness to engage more readily in distracting tasks may offset the potential safety benefits of wearable devices.” That finding identifies a possible trade-off; it is not proof that navigation glasses increase crashes.
Amazon’s announcement includes a tester’s positive account of keeping information in view. That is one worker’s reported experience in a company announcement, not an independent safety result. There is no established population-level comparison here for delivery-worker crash rates, route time saved, productivity, or adoption.

What matters when choosing a setup
For a delivery operation evaluating navigation, match the device to the work rather than assuming one interface is best throughout the shift. Evidence directly informs accuracy, perceived usability, hazard acknowledgement and limited aspects of driving distraction. It does not provide comparative results for full-shift comfort, weather, battery life in everyday use, phone mounts, or current commercial glasses.

- Route context: A map is useful when a courier needs to inspect a route or understand a correction, not just follow the next turn cue.
- Interaction: Consider how often the worker must handle or operate the device, especially when carrying a package.
- Attention: A visual cue can still draw attention, whether it is on a phone or in glasses.
- Fit and reliability: Prescription compatibility, comfort over a shift, battery and weather performance matter in practice, but the cited comparisons do not quantify them.
- Task stage: Evidence about walking or cycling cannot automatically answer how an interface performs in a moving delivery vehicle.
