Smart fridges can introduce privacy and software-support concerns that ordinary refrigerators do not. Their connected features may also depend on an app, internet access, or a manufacturer’s online service. How much that matters depends on the specific model: not every smart fridge collects the same data, has the same offline functions, or receives the same level of support.
What are the disadvantages of a smart fridge?
The main trade-off is that some refrigerator functions now involve connected software and services as well as the appliance itself. That can mean more data and permissions to manage, reliance on an app or internet connection for certain features, and a need to pay attention to software updates and manufacturer support.

These are potential drawbacks, not proof that every smart refrigerator is unsafe, inefficient, or expensive to maintain. The practical impact depends on the model’s design, the features you use, and what continues working if its connectivity or support changes.

A smart refrigerator may communicate with an app or online service, so it is worth checking what information the product and its companion app request, why they need it, and whether sharing can be limited. The UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) specifically included Wi-Fi fridges in its June 2025 discussion of smart products. Its guidance addresses transparency, collecting only necessary information, and allowing people to exercise rights such as deleting product data: ICO guidance on smart products.

- Dual Ice Maker With Water And Ice Dispenser
- Fingerprint Resistant
- Standard Depth
- LED Interior Lighting
That does not establish that all refrigerators collect identical data. Review the privacy information and permissions for the exact product and app rather than assuming what is collected from the “smart fridge” label alone.
- Check which permissions the app requests and whether each is necessary for the feature you want.
- Limit unnecessary information sharing, use a strong password, and keep software updated, following the ICO’s general recommendations for smart products.
- Before selling or disposing of the appliance, check the manufacturer’s instructions for removing accounts and erasing personal information.
The ICO cited TechUK research that four in five people in Britain own at least one smart product. That figure concerns smart products generally, not refrigerator ownership. The ICO’s Executive Director for Regulatory Risk, Stephen Almond, said smart products can know a lot about people, but should not collect excessive information.
What happens if a smart fridge loses Wi-Fi?
Connectivity matters most when a feature relies on an app, internet access, or a vendor’s cloud service. Depending on the model, remote monitoring, alerts, or other connected functions may become unavailable when the connection or service is down. The available evidence does not establish which functions remain usable offline across current models, so check the manual or ask the manufacturer about the specific refrigerator.
Before buying, identify which features work without Wi-Fi, which require an account or cloud service, and what happens if the manufacturer discontinues that service. If you mainly need reliable cooling and storage, consider whether the connected features justify adding these dependencies.
Software updates and manufacturer support can affect long-term use
Connected appliances rely partly on software, and the manufacturer’s support decisions can affect how useful and secure that software remains. The OECD has described how software-support choices can impede a smart device’s use, while unsupported software can create security risks for the device and the wider connected-home ecosystem: OECD analysis of communication-product security.
This is a general smart-device concern, not evidence that every refrigerator maker stops supporting products or that every unsupported fridge has been compromised. For a particular model, look for an update-support commitment, available account protections, and clear instructions for managing the appliance if online support ends.
Cybersecurity and appliance safety depend on the model
Any connected product can raise security questions, but the risk depends on its implementation and support practices. ENERGY STAR describes security risks in connected products and sets out principles such as consumer ownership of data and the ability to override connected functionality. These are program principles, not a guarantee that every product marketed as a smart fridge follows them: ENERGY STAR connected criteria.

- Designed for Busy Households: This 29.cu. ft. extra‑large capacity and traditional 36" width refrigerator provides ample room and smart organization for family favorites, meal‑prep ingredients, and big‑batch groceries so you can shop less and have more on hand
- Fast, Even Cooling for Freshness: Accela Chill and Accela Freeze boost fan-forced cold air to quickly cool or freeze newly added groceries, while the Multi-Flow Air System circulates air across every shelf for consistent temperatures and long-lasting freshness
- Filtered Ice & Water, More Freezer Space: A space-saving ice maker tucked into the freezer door frees up shelf space while producing up to 3 lbs. of ice per day, and the NSF-certified filtration system delivers great-tasting, filtered ice and water from the convenient external dispenser
- Maximize Your Storage Space: Edge-to-edge glass shelves, adjustable shelving, and 4 gallon-size clear door bins keep groceries visible and within reach, while crisper drawers preserve fruits and veggies and the freezer’s shelves, basket, and door bins keep frozen foods neatly organized
- Convenient Features for Everyday Use: Enhanced LED lighting on the ceiling and sides illuminates every area, so food never gets lost, while the inverter compressor runs quietly and efficiently; and the fingerprint-resistant finish keeps your refrigerator stylish
A UK government-commissioned safety review published in March 2023 included fridge/freezers in its scope. It discussed software vulnerabilities in connected appliances, but its modeled fire-risk estimates concerned time-shifted washing machines, tumble dryers, and dishwashers—not refrigerators. The report also said no malware incidents compromising appliance safety had been reported at the time it was written. It therefore does not support saying smart fridges commonly catch fire or are routinely hacked: UK smart domestic appliances safety review.

The cited evidence does not show that smart fridges as a category use more electricity than comparable conventional refrigerators. ENERGY STAR notes that connected appliances can offer energy reporting, door-open alerts, and optional utility demand-response features, with consumer override. Those functions may be useful, but their availability does not prove that a connected model uses less energy overall: ENERGY STAR connected criteria.
Compare the energy label or verified consumption for the exact models you are considering. The U.S. Department of Energy says manufacturers have been required to comply with energy conservation standards for refrigeration products since 1990; that regulatory background is not proof of any individual model’s efficiency: U.S. Department of Energy appliance standards.
Are smart fridges worth it?
That depends on whether the connected features address a real need and whether you are comfortable with their privacy and support trade-offs. Smart features can include remote monitoring, food-management functions, alerts, or energy reporting. Canada’s privacy commissioner has noted that smart fridges can help prevent food spoilage and save consumers money, but that potential benefit does not establish that every household will save money: Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada on smart devices.
Compare specific models rather than treating “smart” as one standard set of capabilities. Check:
- Which functions work without Wi-Fi, an app, an account, or a vendor cloud service?
- What data and app permissions are involved, and can you limit sharing or delete stored data?
- Whether the manufacturer explains software updates, support duration, and account protections.
- The exact models’ energy labels or verified consumption.
- Current purchase price, warranty, repair terms, and parts availability.
- Whether remote alerts, monitoring, or food-management tools would genuinely help your household.
There is no general price or repair-cost premium established here for smart refrigerators. Those costs need to be checked against current, model-specific terms rather than inferred from connectivity alone.
