The Apple TV comedy in the headline is Small Prophets, a UK series about a man searching for answers after his girlfriend disappears. The “finest show to hit Apple this year” line is a critic’s opinion, not an objective ranking: The Hollywood Reporter’s review, as quoted by 9to5Mac on October 6, 2026, qualified it by saying the superlative could depend on how viewers feel about Widow’s Bay.
What is Small Prophets about?
Apple describes the series this way: “Since his girlfriend went missing seven years ago, Michael’s life has been on hold. But a mystical recipe in an old journal promises to give the answers he’s been longing for.” The premise combines a missing-person mystery with a supernatural-sounding recipe; the official description does not reveal what the recipe does or how Michael’s search unfolds.

Why are critics calling it one of Apple’s best shows this year?
The phrase comes from a review cited by Ryan Christoffel at 9to5Mac on October 6, 2026. He quoted The Hollywood Reporter’s assessment: “I would…argue that Small Prophets may be the finest show to hit Apple this year, though that superlative would also probably depend on your feelings about Widow’s Bay.” That qualification matters: it frames the praise as a critic’s judgment and explicitly acknowledges another show as a point of comparison. The quoted review page was not independently accessible, so the statement is attributed here through 9to5Mac.
9to5Mac also reproduced a positive assessment from The Verge, which described the series as “low-key” but strong, highlighting its supporting cast, mystery, and blend of sweet and silly tones. Those are reviewers’ impressions, not guarantees that every viewer will respond the same way.

Apple has an official US listing for the show. Release timing was not presented identically across the available pages: 9to5Mac reported on October 6, 2026 that the US premiere was scheduled for 9:00 p.m. ET / 6:00 p.m. PT that evening and said Apple TV was bringing the already UK-aired series to a wider audience. Apple’s listing, accessed around the same time, still displayed “Coming Wednesday.” These details may reflect different update timing, so the dated US premiere report should not be treated as a confirmed worldwide schedule.
