Small Calculator, Three Bugs: Input Parsing, Unit Drift, and Stale Results

A calculator's plausible answer can still be wrong. Define its locale and input rules, preserve units through conversions, and test whether results stay current after edits.

A calculator can return a plausible but wrong answer when it reads a number using the wrong locale, separates a quantity from its unit, or keeps displaying a result from an earlier calculation state. Preventing these failures means defining an explicit input policy, preserving unit identity through calculations, and ensuring every visible result reflects the current inputs.

1. Input parsing: make the number format explicit

A string such as 1,234 is not self-interpreting: depending on the locale and the calculator’s rules, a comma may mark grouping or a decimal fraction. If parsing silently applies the wrong convention, the resulting value can look reasonable while representing something different from what the user entered.

Platform APIs make locale and parsing policy explicit. Apple’s Decimal.ParseStrategy builds a decimal parser from a format style and locale; its documented U.S. currency example accepts grouped input such as $1,000.22. Android’s ICU NumberFormat documents locale-specific grouping conventions and distinguishes lenient parsing, suited to user input, from strict parsing. Depending on the API, parsing failure can be indicated by a null return or an exception. These are different policies, not interchangeable guarantees.

Choose and document an input contract

  • Decide whether input follows the device locale, a user-selected locale, or fixed notation. Make the choice visible when the same string could mean different values.
  • Specify whether grouping separators, decimal separators, whitespace, signs, and exponent notation are accepted.
  • Account for intermediate editing states. A user may temporarily enter a sign or decimal separator before completing a number; do not mistake every incomplete edit for a finished value.
  • Reject ambiguous or malformed input, or resolve it under a clearly defined rule. Avoid silently consuming only part of a string and interpreting the remainder differently.
  • Keep parsing separate from formatting, and test representative locales, valid input, malformed input, and partial edits in both directions.

Locale-sensitive output is a separate concern from the input contract. The ECMA-402 specification defines formatting options such as grouping, rounding, and notation, but it does not prescribe how a calculator must parse user input.

2. Unit drift: preserve what the number measures

A measurement is not just a numeric value. It is a value paired with a unit, and unit drift can occur if a conversion updates the number but leaves the label, selected unit, or subsequent operation unchanged. Keep the quantity and its unit attached in the calculation model; convert at a defined boundary and format only after the intended output unit is known.

Locale can affect presentation without changing the underlying measurement. Apple’s Measurement.FormatStyle displays a measurement using the locale’s preferred unit by default, with the current locale set to update automatically. The Microsoft Calculator project lists conversion between many units as a feature. Together, these examples illustrate why localized display text should not be treated as the quantity itself.

Make conversions auditable

  1. Record the input value together with its source unit, such as 10 kilometers.
  2. Apply a conversion using that source unit and an explicitly selected target unit, such as miles.
  3. Retain the converted quantity with the target unit; do not update only the number or only the label.
  4. Round for display at a defined point. If the calculation needs more precision than the display, retain the calculation value separately from the formatted string.

Displayed digits do not prove that a calculation is physically accurate to those digits. The GNU Units manual cautions that excess displayed precision can expose rounding artifacts and that the digits shown may not be meaningful for the intended computation. In a calculator, state whether rounding occurs during conversion or only when formatting the result; avoid implying that a long display alone establishes meaningful precision.

3. Stale results: keep the displayed answer tied to current state

A stale-result defect occurs when the view shows an answer derived from an earlier expression, operand, unit, or mode after the user has changed it. This is a view-and-state synchronization failure: the displayed value and any associated unit or history need to correspond to the calculator’s current calculation state.

  • Performs trigonometric functions, logarithms, roots, powers, reciprocals, and factorials
  • Also add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions; 1-variable statistics (mean / standard deviation)
  • Conversions: fractions/decimals, degrees/radians/grads, DMS/decimal/degrees, and polar/rectangular

The Microsoft Calculator project describes a calculation engine that maintains state. Its manual testing documentation covers modes and UI behavior, including changing language and regional number format. These materials establish that state and interface behavior matter; they do not document a specific stale-result incident.

Review the whole calculation path

When choosing or reviewing a fix, trace one user action from entry to display. Check that the parser uses the intended locale and strictness, that the numeric representation and rounding boundary suit the calculation, that the unit remains attached to the value, and that every state change refreshes or invalidates the displayed result. A defect in any one stage can produce an answer that looks convincing but does not match the user’s current input.

The Microsoft Calculator project README describes its basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division as having “Infinite precision for basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) so that calculations never lose precision.” That is the project’s stated feature for those operations; it should not be generalized to unit conversions, display rounding, or other calculator implementations.
