Small businesses can start video marketing with a phone. The useful first step is not buying equipment or posting everywhere: decide who you want to reach and what you want the viewer to understand or do. Then make one clear, useful video, publish it where that audience is reachable, and measure the result against your goal.

Start with a business goal, not a video format

Video is a format, not a strategy by itself. Choose one outcome and one audience before deciding what to film. Possible outcomes include explaining an offer, answering a recurring support question, encouraging a booking, generating an inquiry, or introducing the business to prospective customers. Keep the goal realistic for your available time and resources; publishing a video does not guarantee more revenue, leads, or search visibility.

Make the goal specific enough to assess. For example, a local service business might make a short video explaining what to expect at a first appointment, then track visits to its booking page or appointment inquiries. A software business might demonstrate a common task and monitor completion of the linked tutorial or support requests about that task. Pick a measure that reflects the intended action rather than views alone.

LocaliQ recommends defining goals and audience, mapping topics to the strategy, and planning a realistic timeline and budget. Its guide was updated February 24, 2026: LocaliQ’s small-business video marketing guide.

Choose a topic and format that answer a real question

Start with questions customers already ask, points of confusion in the buying process, or tasks they need help completing. A focused answer is easier to plan and more useful to the intended viewer than a broad promotional message.

Format Useful when Example
Social clip You have one short idea, tip, or update to communicate in a channel your audience uses. A quick seasonal service reminder or a single practical tip.
Explainer A customer needs context to understand a product, service, process, or choice. A plain-language overview of how a consultation works.
Product or service demonstration Seeing the process or result is more helpful than reading a description. Show how to use a product or what a service visit includes.
Customer testimonial A customer is willing to share their perspective and you have permission to use it. A customer describes a specific experience in their own words.
Screen recording The viewer needs to follow steps on a website, app, or other software interface. Walk through setting up an account or completing a common task.

Wyzowl’s 2026 survey reports that 69% of its surveyed video marketers had created social media videos, 68% explainers, 57% testimonials, and 39% product demos. Those figures describe reported use, not proof that any format will work best for a particular small business. Wyzowl says it surveyed 266 unique respondents in late 2025, including marketing professionals and online consumers: Wyzowl’s 2026 video marketing survey.

Pick a production route that fits your time and skills

You do not need a production department to begin. Alex Pell, founder of Dashboard Media, put the principle plainly in a 2020 Hiscox UK SME YouTube guide: “Having a clear message and premise is more important than what equipment you use.” The guide also notes that a phone can be used to shoot, edit, and share video. The phone-first principle remains practical; its older YouTube interface directions should not be treated as current. Read the Hiscox UK SME YouTube guide.

Route Good fit when Trade-offs to consider
Make it in-house The topic is straightforward, staff have the relevant knowledge, and you can make time for recording and editing. You retain direct control and can repeat the process, but staff time is a real cost and production may be limited by in-house skills.
Use a mix of staff and a freelancer Your team can supply subject expertise or footage, but would benefit from help with editing, scripting, or production. Work is shared, but it takes coordination and a clearly defined handoff.
Hire an outside production provider The video requires production capabilities, time, or polish your team cannot reasonably provide. Outside expertise can fill a skills gap, but cost, approvals, and revisions need to fit your budget and schedule.

In Wyzowl’s 2026 survey, 59% said they created videos in-house, 10% exclusively used external vendors, and 32% used a mix. This is the surveyed population, not a small-business-only breakdown or a recommendation that one route is superior. Compare the options for your own project by cost, staff hours, control, repeatability, and complexity.

Plan a simple, repeatable production workflow

  1. Write the viewer and purpose in one sentence. For example: “This video helps first-time customers understand how to prepare for a home energy assessment.” If the purpose is hard to state, narrow the topic.
  2. Outline the answer before recording. Use a short opening that identifies the question, the main explanation in a logical order, and a next step if one is useful. An outline helps keep the video focused without requiring a polished script.
  3. Choose the simplest setup that supports the job. A phone is a reasonable starting point. A phone tripod can make hands-free recording easier; a compatible clip-on microphone may help with interviews or noisy locations. These are optional conveniences, not prerequisites. Check device compatibility before buying accessories.
  4. Record for clarity. Choose a quiet place when possible, make sure the subject is visible, and check that speech can be understood. Record a short test and listen back before filming the full piece.
  5. Edit only what helps the viewer. Remove pauses or mistakes that distract, make important steps legible, and avoid adding effects that obscure the explanation. Wistia’s 2026 report lists tools its surveyed users named for recording and editing, including Canva, Loom, Wistia, CapCut, iMovie, DaVinci Resolve, and Adobe Premiere Pro; this is not a comparative product test or endorsement. See Wistia’s 2026 State of Video report.
  6. Set a cadence you can sustain. Plan topics and time in advance, but do not assume that daily posting is necessary. The right schedule depends on the audience, available staff time, and whether each video answers a useful question.

Publish where the intended audience can find the video

Choose distribution based on where your customers already look for this kind of information: a social channel, your website, an email, or a video platform. Do not treat a platform’s broad popularity as proof that it is the right channel for your business. Wistia’s 2026 report says LinkedIn and YouTube were the most-used sharing platforms among its surveyed companies, but that finding is not a universal prescription for small businesses. Google/Kantar reported that 87% of surveyed U.S. YouTube viewers said YouTube introduces them to new things they would not have found on their own; that platform discovery result does not establish that a particular business will gain customers by posting there. The study, reported by Think with Google in April 2026, included 968 YouTube viewers and 7,621 weekly video viewers aged 18–64, with fieldwork from December 10, 2025 to January 12, 2026. Read Think with Google’s account of the study.

  • Use a title that tells the viewer what the video answers or demonstrates.
  • Write a concise, accurate description and include a clear next step where appropriate.
  • Provide captions and review them for transcription errors, especially names, prices, technical terms, and instructions.
  • Check the current publishing guidance for the channel you choose. The Hiscox guide dates to 2020, so its YouTube interface and feature instructions may no longer match today’s tools.
  • Repurpose a longer video into shorter clips only when the excerpts remain useful on their own and the extra work is manageable.

Measure the result that matches your original goal

Decide what evidence would make you repeat, revise, or stop this approach. Views can indicate exposure, but they do not by themselves establish that the video helped the business outcome you chose.

Original goal Useful measures to consider
Explain a product or service Relevant page visits, questions about the offer, or whether customers report better understanding.
Encourage inquiries or bookings Inquiries or bookings associated with the video’s call to action, assessed over a sensible period.
Support existing customers Use of the help resource and whether the same support question becomes easier to resolve.
Introduce the business to new viewers Reach among the intended audience and meaningful follow-on actions, rather than raw views alone.

Compare results with the goal you set, while allowing for other factors such as audience size, seasonality, and changes in distribution. If a video does not perform as hoped, check whether the topic was relevant, the opening made its value clear, the call to action was easy to find, and the distribution channel matched the audience before deciding whether to abandon video altogether.

Common mistakes that waste a small team’s effort

  • Starting with gear: buy nothing until the message and recording conditions reveal a genuine need.
  • Making a generic advertisement: answer a specific customer question or show a specific benefit instead of trying to say everything at once.
  • Publishing without a next step: if you want the viewer to act, make the action relevant and easy to understand.
  • Posting everywhere by default: choose channels based on audience fit and the time you can commit to adapting and maintaining the content.
  • Using customer footage without clear permission: agree on where and how a testimonial may be used, and keep its wording and context accurate.
  • Judging success only by views: connect measurement to the intended outcome and avoid claiming a business impact the available evidence cannot show.
  • Choosing an unsustainable schedule: a smaller number of useful, well-maintained videos is more realistic than a cadence that staff cannot keep up.

Or let it run in the cloud
