Choose business internet by matching download and upload capacity to the work your team does at the same time, verifying options at your exact address, and deciding which tasks must continue if the main connection fails. A dependable plan includes more than a fast service: it may also need an independent backup connection, compatible dual-WAN equipment, sufficient power, and tested procedures for essential transactions.
How much internet speed does a small business need?
There is no universal speed target for every small business. Start with the applications people use and how many users or devices are active simultaneously. List point-of-sale and card authorization, cloud software, video meetings, voice, remote access, customer-facing systems, and file synchronization. Identify which activities need to keep working during an outage, which can operate in a reduced mode, and which can wait.

Consider download and upload separately. Download capacity supports receiving data, while upload capacity matters for activities such as video calls, sending files to cloud storage, and hosted voice. The SBA Office of Advocacy defines fixed broadband as at least 100 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload for its 2026 analysis; that is an analytical benchmark, not a prescription for an individual business. The SBA brief reports that 83.9% of small-business establishments had terrestrial-provider access to at least 100/20 Mbps in 2024, compared with 48.1% in 2014. It reports access to at least 250/25 Mbps for 74.8% and at least 1,000/100 Mbps for 51.2% of establishments in 2024. These figures describe reported availability for establishments, not the service an individual business buys or receives.

What internet providers are available at your business address?
Check the precise workplace address rather than relying on a provider’s broad service-area claim. The FCC National Broadband Map lets you view provider-reported fixed options, including fiber, cable, DSL, satellite, and fixed wireless, along with technologies and maximum advertised download and upload speeds reported for a location. Those advertised maximums are not guarantees of performance. Confirm availability, installation details, and the actual offer directly with the provider. Compare available offers on the same factors: download and upload speeds, connection type, installation charges, equipment costs, contract length, support terms, any stated reliability commitments, and the cost of a secondary connection. Availability and commercial terms vary by location, and the map alone does not establish price or whether an offer meets your business’s needs.

Keep fixed and mobile coverage distinct. The map’s mobile coverage display indicates where a consumer should be able to connect outdoors or in a moving vehicle; it does not show indoor coverage. A mobile coverage polygon therefore does not prove that a cellular hotspot or modem will work reliably inside your workplace. Check reception at the actual equipment location before counting on it as backup.

What should you use as backup internet for your business?
First decide what must remain operational and for how long. Possible backup categories to investigate include a second fixed line, cellular broadband or a hotspot, fixed wireless, and satellite service where available and suitable. No option is guaranteed to be offered at a particular address or to fit every business. A second connection is most useful when it can survive the kind of failure that takes down the primary one; consider whether both paths rely on the same provider, access technology, or vulnerable local infrastructure.

Automatic failover commonly requires a router or firewall that supports two WAN connections, often called dual-WAN, plus a compatible modem or other way to deliver the secondary connection. Check that the equipment can handle the backup link’s throughput and that the modem, router, and any necessary network gear can stay powered during the outage. A UPS may help maintain power to network equipment, but it cannot keep an internet service running if the provider’s network itself is unavailable.
Failover keeps a route to the internet available; it does not restore a cloud service that is down or guarantee that payment processors and other applications will accept traffic from a different IP address. Those services are dependencies to verify with their vendors and test over the backup path.

How do you keep taking payments if the internet goes down?
Do not assume that a working backup connection automatically means card payments or other point-of-sale functions will work. Ask your payment processor and point-of-sale provider which outage or offline modes are supported, what transactions can be completed without a connection, and how those transactions are stored or submitted later. The available behavior depends on the specific service and configuration; test it rather than assuming.

If payment authorization must continue, test the complete process on the backup connection: terminal or app connectivity, staff sign-in, authorization, and any required receipt or record handling. Also identify a practical fallback for staff to communicate with customers and colleagues if the connection is unavailable.

How can you test internet failover?
A router status light or a “connected” indicator only shows part of the picture. A useful test checks whether designated employees can complete the actual transactions the business has said must continue. The ITECS failover checklist puts the operational goal plainly: “A backup link is successful only when designated employees can complete the business transactions that matter during an outage.” See ITECS’s small-business failover checklist.
- Set priorities: Record which workflows must continue, which can run in reduced mode, and which can pause. Name the staff responsible for testing and communicating during an outage.
- Check the setup: Confirm that the secondary service is active, the router or firewall is configured for the intended failover behavior, and required network equipment has power.
- Run a controlled test: With the team prepared, interrupt the primary connection in a controlled way and confirm that traffic moves to the backup. Avoid testing during a period when a failed connection would put critical operations at undue risk.
- Complete real workflows: Have designated employees test the applications and transactions on the priority list, such as cloud sign-in, calls, and payment processing where applicable. Note any service that fails or requires a manual step.
- Restore the normal path: Confirm that the connection returns to the primary service as intended, and document how staff should respond if it does not.
- Practice and revise: Set a recurring test schedule that fits the business, record results, and update the plan when services, equipment, or staff responsibilities change.

How should internet continuity fit into security and data backup?
Internet failover is not data protection. A secondary connection does not undo a cyberattack, recover lost files, or ensure that cloud applications are available. Keep network access and recovery in the same continuity plan: use current router security settings, change default credentials, and limit access to business networks.
The FTC recommends regular backups and advises keeping backup copies disconnected from the network so they can help with recovery if an attacker reaches the network. Read the FTC’s small-business cybersecurity guidance.
