Windows Developer Configurations automates the setup of a Windows development environment; the Microsoft documentation described here does not establish that Microsoft admitted to breaking a specific Windows feature. The project offers several setup scopes, from a complete workstation to one language toolchain, so you can choose what fits without applying every setting.
What Windows Developer Configurations does
Microsoft describes Windows Developer Configurations as an open-source collection of declarative configuration files. They specify packages, operating-system settings and follow-up steps for a development scenario. The configurations are intended to be safe to rerun, and Microsoft says changes are tested automatically.

It is a setup tool, not a general Windows repair utility. Its main paths are a full developer workstation, a Windows-and-WSL shell setup, or an individual workload such as Python or .NET. The tools and package versions can change; check the project’s current README and configuration files before running a setup.

Standard or full workstation?
The documented standard workstation includes tools such as Windows Terminal, PowerShell 7, Git, GitHub CLI, Visual Studio Code, the .NET SDK, Python with uv, Node.js, Windows Coreutils, Windows App CLI, Oh My Posh and PowerToys. The full option adds settings, including Developer Mode and other system options. Choose full only if those additional changes suit your workflow; a broader configuration is not automatically better.

What to check before setup
- WSL and restart: The workstation flow can require a restart to complete WSL setup.
- Virtualization: WSL setup depends on virtualization being available. On a physical PC, check whether virtualization is enabled in firmware; inside a virtual machine, nested virtualization may need to be exposed by its host.
- Administrator access and policy: Some system-level settings require elevated permissions, and organization-managed devices may restrict them. Follow your organization’s device policy rather than attempting to bypass it.
- Current instructions: Use the repository’s live README for the exact command and prerequisites for the workload you selected, since commands and package versions can change.
Troubleshoot common setup failures
WSL installation fails
Check that virtualization is available. Enable it in the machine’s firmware if you control a physical PC, or ask the virtual-machine administrator whether nested virtualization is supported and enabled. If setup requests a restart, complete it before assuming the configuration failed.
WinGet configuration reports an internal error
The project README documents an internal WinGet configuration error associated with a missing Visual C++ Redistributable. Consult its current troubleshooting entry for the applicable recovery steps rather than relying on a command that may have changed.

An installed command is missing from PATH
Open a new terminal so it can load updated environment variables. If the command is still unavailable, the project documents using the workload shim; check the README for the current invocation.
Do you need Developer Mode?
Not for ordinary daily use or every kind of development. Microsoft describes Developer Mode as enabling development-related capabilities, including debugging and additional deployment options. It requires administrator access and may be disabled on organization-managed devices. Enable it only when a tool or workflow you use needs those capabilities.

Does this prove Microsoft admitted it broke Windows?
No. The documentation describes repeatable environment setup and lists specific troubleshooting cases, but it does not substantiate an admission that Microsoft broke a particular Windows feature. A claim about a specific defect would need separate evidence identifying the behavior and Microsoft’s acknowledgment of it. The documented setup failures are not, by themselves, proof of a general Windows defect.

Microsoft’s broader Windows developer resources also point to WinGet, WSL, Windows Terminal, PowerToys and language- or framework-specific setup guidance. For exact workloads, commands and recovery steps, use the current Microsoft-maintained Windows Developer Configurations README; for the scope of a particular configuration, check its configuration file.
