Before reinstalling Windows, spend about 30 minutes checking what is actually slowing the PC. The time is a triage window, not a promise that a scan, update, or repair will finish. Start with Task Manager and a restart, try only low-risk fixes that match what you observe, and reinstall only after you have considered less disruptive options.
Why is your Windows PC suddenly slow?
Slowness can come from several causes at once: too many apps or browser tabs, programs running at startup, low storage, pending software updates, malware, corrupted system files, or hardware that can no longer keep up. The timing and pattern help narrow the cause: note whether the problem appears during startup, all the time, in one particular app, or after an update or software change.

If the PC has been running for a long time, restart it once. After it boots, open only the apps you normally need and compare the same task or symptom. Microsoft notes that apps running at startup can slow boot time and increase background use. Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance also covers resource monitoring, storage, updates, malware scans, and older hardware.
How can you find what is slowing down the computer?
Check resource use in Task Manager
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- On Processes, review CPU, memory, and disk use while the slowdown is happening. Look for activity that coincides with the symptom.
- Open Performance for an overview of CPU, memory, and disk activity.
- Close only apps you recognize and are not using. Do not end unfamiliar processes simply because a number looks high: one snapshot does not establish that a process is faulty.
Review what launches at startup
In Task Manager, open Startup apps. Disable only programs you recognize and do not need to launch automatically. Avoid disabling security software or anything whose purpose you do not understand. Restart and see whether boot or background performance changes.

What should you try during a 30-minute triage?
Use the time to gather evidence and try reversible, cause-matched checks—not to rush through every repair. A scan, update, or system-file repair can take longer than this window.
Minutes 0–5: establish the pattern
- Identify when the slowdown occurs: startup, continuously, in one app, or after a recent change.
- If uptime is long, restart once and compare the same task with only essential apps open.
Minutes 5–10: observe before changing settings
- Use Task Manager to check CPU, memory, and disk activity during the problem.
- Review Startup apps and note candidates rather than disabling programs indiscriminately.
Minutes 10–18: try low-risk checks that fit the evidence
- Startup load: disable only unnecessary, familiar startup apps.
- Low free space: check storage and use Storage Sense or temporary-file cleanup carefully. Do not delete files you cannot identify.
- Pending updates: check Windows Update and install appropriate pending updates; an update is not a guaranteed speed boost.
- Possible malware: run a Quick scan in Windows Security if the symptoms make malware plausible.
Minutes 18–25: isolate a suspected software conflict
If the slowdown began after installing software or seems tied to background software, a clean boot can help test whether a non-Microsoft startup app or service is interfering. Follow Microsoft’s clean boot instructions for your Windows version. Some functionality may be temporarily unavailable; record any settings you change and restore normal startup when the test is complete.
Minutes 25–30: choose the next diagnostic
If corrupted system files are a plausible cause, run Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) before System File Checker (SFC), using an administrator Command Prompt or Terminal. Let each command finish; the scans may exceed the time window. Microsoft’s instructions provide the exact sequence and commands: Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files. If performance remains poor, record what you observed and consider hardware or technical support instead of starting a reinstall automatically.

Should you reinstall Windows if the PC is slow?
Not as the first response. Microsoft advises starting with the least disruptive recovery option and trying other options only if needed. Choose based on what changed and what you are willing to remove:
| Option | When it may fit | What it keeps or removes | Important conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows troubleshooters or a targeted fix | A specific issue has a plausible cause, such as storage pressure or a recent change. | Depends on the action; this is not a Windows reinstall. | Use the tool or fix that matches the symptom rather than making unrelated changes. |
| Uninstall a recent update | The slowdown began after a Windows update. | Removes the selected update; other effects depend on the update and system. | Consider this only when timing points to that update and follow the recovery instructions for the device. |
| Repair reinstall through Windows Update (Windows 11) | Windows 11 has persistent problems that may involve system files or components. | Preserves apps, personal files, and settings. | Requires power and internet. Availability depends on device and Windows version; Microsoft specifies Windows 11 version 22H2 or later with the February 2024 optional update or later, and the option may be absent on older or managed systems. See Microsoft’s current-version repair reinstall instructions. |
| Reset this PC: Keep my files | You want Windows reinstalled and accept reinstalling apps and resetting settings. | Keeps personal files, but removes apps and settings. | Back up important files first and check the options shown on the PC. |
| Reset this PC: Remove everything | You intend to remove personal files as well as apps and settings. | Removes personal files, apps, and settings. | Back up anything you need before proceeding. |
| Clean installation from installation media | You need a clean install and understand the drive-selection consequences. | Can remove everything from the selected drive. | Confirm the target drive and back up files before starting. |
For a Windows 11 device running version 24H2 or later, Microsoft’s recovery guidance also describes point-in-time restore availability. Check the Windows recovery options for the applicable version and device before choosing a path.

It depends on the reset option. Keep my files retains personal files but removes apps and settings; Remove everything removes personal files, apps, and settings. A clean installation can remove everything from the drive you select. Read the exact recovery screen before confirming because outcomes depend on the option selected.

Persistent slowness does not prove Windows needs reinstalling. Older PCs with outdated hardware may see little benefit from software changes, according to Microsoft. Before considering a component upgrade, identify the actual bottleneck and check the exact PC model and its supported hardware; the evidence here does not establish which component, if any, should be replaced.
If the PC is still running Windows 10, note that support ended on October 14, 2025. The PC can still work, but Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date. See Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance for its support information and the checks described above.
