Why the Fujifilm X100VI Made One Photographer Fall for Photography Again

The camera in Katie Collins’s story is the Fujifilm X100VI. During a week in China, the CNET writer says its viewfinder, fixed lens and in-camera Film Simulations made photography feel engaging again after years of relying mostly on her phone. That is one photographer’s account—not proof that TikTok users broadly prefer the camera or that it will have the same effect on everyone.

What made the X100VI feel different from taking photos with a phone?

Collins describes a more deliberate routine: raise the viewfinder, compose through one fixed field of view and choose a look in the camera before taking the picture. She wrote, “When I first raised the viewfinder to my eye, I didn’t realize that once I started taking photos, I wouldn’t want to stop.” The appeal was not simply a different device; it was the tactile process of making each frame.

Fujifilm lists 20 Film Simulation modes for the X100VI. Collins enjoyed selecting a look and said that decision encouraged her to slow down and consider the mood or subject she wanted. She found Classic Negative suited the street photographs she was making. These are her preferences, not a guarantee that a particular simulation will suit every scene or photographer.

Why the fixed lens can be both a creative prompt and a limitation

The X100VI has a fixed 23mm f/2 lens, giving a 35mm-equivalent field of view. Unlike a camera with interchangeable lenses, it does not let you switch to a wider or longer optical focal length. Fujifilm lists digital teleconverter crop options, but cropping is not the same as adding an optical zoom lens.

  • IBIS stabilizer 5 axis, 6 stops, CIBA and 6.2K 30p H.265 10bit 4:2:2 movies
  • 0.5 inches OLED Color Reverse Galilean Viewfinder, Approx. 3.69 million dots with electronic bright frame display
  • Auto focus with intelligent subject recognition: Face or Eye AF, Object Detection, Animals or Birds or Cars or Motorcycles and Bicycles or Planes or Trains

Collins initially thought the fixed view might be restrictive, then found it made her consider where to stand and how to frame a subject. The trade-off became clear when she wanted to capture tall landscape pillars or skyscrapers from below: sometimes the full scene would not fit in one frame. If you often need very wide architectural or landscape shots, or want to reframe quickly without moving, that constraint matters more than the camera’s popularity online.

What the camera offers—and what the specifications don’t promise

Fujifilm’s product information lists a 40.2-megapixel APS-C sensor, up to six stops of in-body image stabilization, a hybrid viewfinder, a tilting LCD and advanced video modes. Those specifications describe the camera; they do not establish that it will make someone more creative or guarantee sharp photos in every situation.

  • Capture timeless moments effortlessly with the FUJIFILM X100VI camera. Featuring a classic dial-based design merged with cutting-edge imaging technology, it offers 1.5x more resolution and double the speed of its predecessor. With an internal 4-stop ND and digital teleconverters, it ensures precise exposure control and closer shots. Experience the charm of analog photography combined with modern functionality, guaranteeing unforgettable memories.
  • When the light is low, and the stakes are high X100VI ensures photos stay sharp and videos stable thanks to up to 6 stops in-body image stabilization (IBIS) system. Internal gyro sensors minimize the impact of camera shake for those critical moments by detecting movements and vibrations across five axes.
  • Stay versatile! In addition to 40.2MP stills, X100VI delivers professional quality video straight out of camera in resolutions up to 6.2K/30P and 4K/60P. On-the-go content creators can also use one of Fujifilm’s 20 built in unique Film Simulation modes, including the new REALA ACE, and take control with two F-Log options to maximize flexibility in post-production workflows.
  • Be ready for every creative moment with X100VI’s state-of-the-art autofocus (AF) system. By harnessing the power of its new X-Processor 5 image processing engine, the camera uses a state-of-the-art AF algorithm and deep learning AI technology to broaden the range of subjects it can recognize. This enables it to accurately track objects, even in low-light conditions when unpredictability can be the difference between getting the image or missing it.
  • Create, share and collaborate in an instant with X100VI’s native Frame.io Camera to Cloud technology. Wirelessly connect to an active internet connection, authenticate to Frame.io, and start uploading photos and videos at the moment of creation.

Collins reports taking around 1,000 photos during her week in Zhangjiajie and Chongqing. That is her estimate of how much she shot, not a test result. She also found nighttime photography challenging and said some images were out of focus, while noting that her own inexperience may have played a part. Her account does not establish a general autofocus defect.

Does “TikTok is obsessed” mean it is the most popular camera?

No platform-wide popularity figure or comparison with other camera models is established by the available sources. “Obsessed” is the headline’s framing, not a measured claim about TikTok use, sales or market share. The concrete story is Collins’s personal experience with the X100VI.

Who might enjoy this camera, and who might find it frustrating?

  • It may suit you if you want a viewfinder-led, tactile way to compose photos and like choosing an in-camera color treatment rather than relying entirely on post-processing.
  • It may frustrate you if you regularly need a very wide view, want optical zoom or interchangeable lenses, or prefer the instant framing flexibility of a phone.
  • Consider your low-light needs before buying: Collins found night shooting difficult, but her experience alone cannot tell you whether the camera’s performance will meet your expectations.
  • Check regional price and stock before making a decision. Collins wrote on August 26, 2026, that she hoped to buy her own for $1,800; that was her intended purchase amount, not a verified current US retail price. Fujifilm’s UK e-shop displayed a starting price of £1,749 and in-stock status when indexed, but regional listings can change.

Where to verify the details

Read Katie Collins’s CNET account for the trip and her first-person impressions. For specifications, consult Fujifilm’s X100VI product information. For regional pricing and availability, see the Fujifilm UK e-shop listing and confirm the current listing in your market.
