Slack vs. Lark: Which Workplace Messaging App Is Right for Your Team?

Slack focuses on channel-based messaging and integrations; Lark bundles chat with meetings, documents, mail, calendar, wiki, databases, and workflows. Compare limits, prices, and fit before choosing.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Slack if your team primarily needs fast, channel-based workplace messaging, extensive third-party integrations, and structured collaboration with people outside your company. Choose Lark if you want messaging bundled with meetings, documents, email, calendar, wiki, databases, approvals, and workflow tools in one workspace.

Neither is universally better. The practical choice depends on the tools you already use, how long you must retain messages, meeting size, external-collaboration needs, administration and compliance requirements, and the price in your country. The figures below are current details from vendor pages accessed in 2026; confirm the checkout quote, taxes, regional availability, and contract terms before signing.

The short answer

Slack is a communications-led product. Its main surface is a set of channels organized around teams, projects, customers, or subjects, with direct messages, file sharing, app integrations, and lightweight collaboration features around that conversation. Lark is a broader work suite: Messenger sits alongside Calendar, Meetings, Docs, Base, Wiki, Mail, Approval, OKR, and AnyCross. That difference matters more than a simple feature checklist. Slack generally adds collaboration to messaging; Lark makes messaging one part of an integrated workspace.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a distributed team that already has document, calendar, storage, and project systems, Slack can be the cleaner communications layer. For a company trying to reduce the number of separate services it operates, Lark may provide more of the stack in one subscription. Validate the specific plan before deciding: free tiers have sharply different history, user, meeting, storage, and integration limits, while paid tiers vary by geography and billing cycle.

What Slack is built to do

Channels are the operating model

Slack organizes work into public and private channels, direct messages, threads, shared files, and searchable conversations. A channel can represent a department, a project, an incident, or an ongoing customer relationship. This structure keeps decisions and context visible to the people who need them instead of trapping every exchange in one-to-one email.

Slack’s official feature overview also includes canvases for structured information, lists for task tracking, clips for recorded updates, file sharing, Workflow Builder, and Huddles for live audio or video collaboration. See the Slack features overview for the current product description.

External collaboration is a first-class use case

Slack Connect is designed for working with people outside your organization, such as agencies, suppliers, clients, or partners. The exact number of external people, channels, guest arrangements, and administrative controls depends on the plan. Treat external access as a security and governance requirement rather than assuming that every tier offers the same model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Integrations extend the conversation

Slack’s pricing page states that its app directory contains more than 2,600 apps. That is a vendor-stated directory count, not an independent assessment of integration quality, maintenance, or the capabilities available on each plan. Before buying, test the particular systems your team relies on: an app can exist in the directory while requiring a paid Slack tier, a separate vendor license, or administrator approval. Review the Slack pricing page and the Slack plans and features table for plan-specific details.

Huddles complement, rather than replace, a meeting system

Huddles provide an immediate way to talk in a channel or direct message. On Slack’s Free tier, the listed limit is one-to-one Huddles. Higher tiers expand collaboration limits and add capabilities, but the exact allowance should be checked against your expected meeting size and recording or administration needs.

Slack hosts customer stories on its feature page. One testimonial from Deliveroo CIO Will Sprunt says, “The thing that keeps us connected the most is Slack. It’s a very immediate and straightforward method of communication, and really the only channel that people prefer and enjoy using.” This is vendor-hosted customer testimony, not an independent evaluation.

What Lark is built to do

Messaging is part of a unified suite

Lark combines Messenger with Calendar, Meetings, Docs, Base, Wiki, Mail, Approval, OKR, and AnyCross. The intent is to let a team move from a conversation to a document, calendar event, database record, approval, or meeting without switching to a separate product family. Its collaboration overview describes the integrated approach.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This breadth is valuable only if your organization will actually use it. If your existing document, mail, calendar, project, and workflow systems are deeply embedded, moving those processes can cost more than the subscription saves. Map the systems that would be replaced, retained, or connected before treating Lark’s larger feature list as a benefit.

Meetings, documents, and records are planned together

Lark’s plan page positions Meetings and Docs beside Messenger rather than as optional add-ons. A team can therefore use the same workspace for chat, scheduled meetings, collaborative documents, structured data in Base, and internal knowledge in Wiki. The practical question is whether that consolidation matches your operating model and whether the plan’s participant, storage, and administration limits fit your users.

Plans, prices, and limits you should verify

Slack pricing is regional

The localized Slack page retrieved for this comparison displayed Pro at €6.75 per user per month when billed annually and €8.25 when billed monthly. Business+ was shown at €15 per user per month billed annually and €18 billed monthly. Enterprise+ pricing was available from sales. These are euro-denominated page details accessed in 2026, not a worldwide price list. Your country, taxes, currency, contract length, and any promotional treatment can change the quote.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Slack Free lists 90 days of searchable history and up to 10 integrations. If your organization needs older records, more integrations, larger Huddles, advanced administration, compliance features, or enhanced support, price the required tier rather than comparing only the free download.

How to choose on the issues that affect operations

1. Messaging style and integrations

Choose Slack when the central problem is fragmented workplace conversation and your team wants channels connected to a large ecosystem of specialist tools. Its directory can reduce custom integration work, but the count alone says nothing about whether your critical app has the right triggers, permissions, notifications, or support on your plan.

Choose Lark when the organization wants fewer boundaries between chat, documents, meetings, email, calendars, knowledge, and structured workflows. List every integration you cannot lose and verify whether Lark offers a native equivalent, a supported connector, or an acceptable migration path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. History, retention, and records

History limits change what employees can find and what administrators can preserve. Slack Free’s 90-day access and Lark Starter’s 18-month history are materially different limits; neither should be described simply as “limited history.” Ask how archived channels, deleted messages, files, exports, legal holds, and retention policies work on the exact plan.

For regulated or contract-sensitive work, involve legal and security staff before migration. A permanent-history label does not by itself establish retention governance, export format, residency, or deletion behavior.

3. Meetings and live collaboration

Match the real use case to the limit. Slack Free Huddles are one-to-one, and Lark Starter meetings are one-to-one. Lark Pro lists up to 500 participants, but a headline maximum does not guarantee that your network, moderation, recording, presentation, or compliance requirements are met. Test a representative meeting with external guests, screen sharing, recording, captions, and the devices your staff actually use.

4. Suite consolidation

Lark can be attractive when the goal is to replace several services with one integrated workspace. Calculate the transition cost: document conversion, calendar migration, identity integration, training, data export, and changed approval processes. If your team only needs chat and already has effective systems for the rest, unused suite components are not savings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Administration, security, and compliance

Slack’s plan table separates features such as data residency, exports, data loss prevention, HIPAA compliance, audit logs, support, and other controls by tier. Lark’s plan materials also list security and organizational controls by plan. Feature labels are not proof of equivalence. For each required control, record the exact plan, geography, contractual commitment, configuration responsibility, audit evidence, and retention behavior offered by each vendor.

6. External organizations

Map who needs access: contractors, clients, suppliers, franchisees, or partner companies. Document whether they need a shared channel, guest account, one-time meeting, document access, or workflow participation. Check identity, billing, ownership, offboarding, and audit requirements. A convenient external conversation can become a governance problem if account ownership is unclear.

7. Total cost, not sticker price

Compare the same number of active users and the same requirements. Include annual versus monthly billing, taxes, currency conversion, storage, meeting services, premium integrations, support, identity or security add-ons, migration labor, and the subscriptions you would still retain. Lark’s suite could replace tools that Slack would leave in place, while Slack’s ecosystem might avoid a costly custom workflow rebuild. Model both scenarios over at least one renewal cycle.

Which teams are likely to fit each product?

Slack is usually the stronger fit when:

  • Channels and searchable conversation are the main daily work surface.
  • Your team depends on many specialist services and wants a mature app directory.
  • You collaborate frequently with external organizations through controlled shared spaces.
  • You already have satisfactory document, calendar, mail, meeting, and project systems.
  • You need to choose among detailed administration, security, compliance, residency, and support tiers.

Lark is usually the stronger fit when:

  • You want messaging, meetings, documents, mail, calendars, knowledge, databases, approvals, and workflows in one environment.
  • Reducing the number of separate workplace subscriptions is a strategic goal.
  • Your team can standardize on Lark’s native work surfaces instead of preserving every existing tool.
  • The plan’s user, storage, history, and meeting limits match your organization.
  • You are prepared to manage a broader migration and adoption program.

Neither should be selected until these answers are clear:

  • Which apps and data must be integrated on day one?
  • How many active users, guests, and external participants need access?
  • How long must messages and files remain searchable or exportable?
  • What meeting size, recording, moderation, and accessibility features are mandatory?
  • Which security, residency, audit, DLP, health-data, or legal-hold controls are contractual requirements?

A practical evaluation process

  1. Inventory current work. Count active users, guests, channels, recurring meetings, document repositories, workflows, and external collaborators. Separate must-have functions from conveniences.
  2. Write acceptance tests. For each critical workflow, define the expected result: for example, a support alert creates a channel notification, an external guest is removed automatically, or a retained message can be exported by an authorized administrator.
  3. Check the exact plans. Use the Slack pricing page, Slack plan table, and Lark plan page. Record region, currency, annual or monthly billing, user caps, history, storage, meetings, integrations, support, and security controls.
  4. Run a representative pilot. Include a normal team, an administrator, an external collaborator, a document-heavy project, and a meeting with the largest expected audience. Test mobile and desktop clients, notifications, search, permissions, exports, and offboarding.
  5. Measure migration effort. Estimate identity setup, directory synchronization, data transfer, channel or workspace design, document conversion, training, help-desk load, and rollback. A low subscription price can be outweighed by a difficult transition.
  6. Build a two-year cost model. Price the same user count and requirements, then add retained systems, taxes, support, migration labor, and likely growth. Show annual and monthly commitments separately.
  7. Document the decision. Keep a record of failed acceptance tests, approved exceptions, data-processing terms, retention settings, and the owner responsible for reviewing plan changes at renewal.

Migration and rollout considerations

If you select Slack

Start with a channel taxonomy that reflects how work is actually organized. Define naming, archival, private-channel ownership, guest access, external collaboration, and incident channels before importing old conversations. Decide what must be retained from the previous system; moving every historical message can create noise and may not be technically or contractually possible.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Connect only approved apps at first. Give administrators a documented process for reviewing scopes, bot accounts, webhooks, and data leaving Slack. Configure retention and export policies before users begin treating channels as the official record. Train staff to use threads, canvases, and channel decisions so critical information does not disappear in direct messages.

If you select Lark

Choose which Lark components become authoritative. For example, decide whether Docs replaces an existing repository, whether Calendar replaces the current scheduling system, and whether Base or Approval replaces a particular workflow. Without explicit ownership, the suite can add another copy of every process instead of consolidating them.

Design the information architecture for Messenger, Wiki, Docs, and Base together. Set permissions, external-sharing rules, storage ownership, meeting policies, and retention before broad rollout. Pilot imports and integrations with a small group, then publish short task-based guidance for creating documents, scheduling meetings, approving requests, and finding historical conversations.

Common rollout failures

  • Buying on the free tier alone: the team discovers history, user, integration, or meeting limits after adoption.
  • Assuming plan names mean equivalent controls: similar labels can hide different scopes, regions, or configuration duties.
  • Ignoring guests and external users: the people outside the payroll often determine the real access model and cost.
  • Migrating without a records policy: old messages are copied indiscriminately, while required legal or operational records remain inaccessible.
  • Counting features instead of replaced systems: a long suite list has no value if employees keep using the old tools.
  • Skipping an exit plan: define export, account closure, data deletion, and document ownership before signing a multi-year commitment.

Questions to settle with sales and security teams

Ask both vendors for written answers tied to the proposed plan and region:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • What is the searchable and exportable history, and how do retention, deletion, legal hold, and backups interact?
  • Which data-residency locations and subprocessors apply to your account?
  • Which integrations, APIs, audit logs, DLP functions, identity controls, and support channels are included?
  • How are external guests billed, authenticated, restricted, and removed?
  • What happens to documents, messages, recordings, and workflows when a user leaves?
  • Which meeting features are available at the participant size you need?
  • How are annual price changes, taxes, minimum commitments, and overages handled?

Use the answers to update your acceptance tests and cost model. Product pages are useful for a first comparison, but your contract and configuration determine the controls your organization actually receives.

Bottom line

Slack is the focused choice for channel-centered communication, broad integrations, and structured collaboration around an existing collection of work tools. Lark is the consolidation choice for teams willing to bring messaging, meetings, documents, mail, calendars, knowledge, databases, approvals, and workflows into one environment. Start with the work you need to unify, then verify history, meeting size, storage, integrations, administration, compliance, and region-specific pricing on the exact plan. That process produces a defensible decision; a feature-count contest does not.
