Google TV does not provide a dedicated Gemini for TV on/off switch. Google’s documented way to turn Gemini for TV off is to remove the television from Google Home. Once it is removed, Google says Google Assistant is available instead.
On the television, you can review the relevant controls at Settings > Accounts and profiles > your account > Voice assistant. The actual change, however, is made by changing the TV’s Google Home membership, not by selecting a different assistant in that menu.

What turning off Gemini changes
Gemini for TV depends on the television being added to a Google Home. Removing the TV from that Home removes the condition Google documents for Gemini for TV, so the TV can use Google Assistant instead. This is a change to the device’s Home assignment, not a deletion of your Google account, Google TV profile or Gemini apps on other devices.

Because the television is leaving a Home, other Google Home features that depend on that membership may also change. Do not assume that every Home integration remains available while the TV is outside a Home. The documented action is specifically a device-membership change, not a preference that affects only Gemini’s answers.
You do not need to buy a new remote, install an app, pay for a subscription or reset the television to follow this procedure. Google Home is the service used to change the TV’s assignment. A factory reset is not part of Google’s instructions and would remove much more than the assistant setting.
Check the TV’s assistant settings first
The settings page is useful for confirming which account and profile you are changing and for seeing whether the television exposes Gemini controls. Menu labels can vary slightly by TV manufacturer, software build and region.

- Select Accounts and profiles.
- Choose the Google account or profile you use on the TV.
- Open Voice assistant.
If Gemini for TV is available to that profile, this area is where Google exposes its TV assistant controls. Finding this page does not mean there is a separate Gemini disable button; the off procedure is still the Google Home removal described below.
Take note of the selected account before making a change. A Google TV can contain more than one profile, and changing the Home assignment for a device is not the same as changing which profile is active. If another household member manages the Home, you may be able to view the menu but not complete the removal.
How to turn off Gemini for TV
Use the Google Home device settings to remove the television from its current Home. Google’s interface can change, so the exact button names in the Google Home app or web interface may differ. Look for the TV’s device settings and its assigned Home.
- Open Google Home on a phone, tablet or computer signed in to the Google account that manages the TV’s Home.
- Find the Google TV device in the list of devices. Check its room, model or other identifying details if several devices have similar names.
- Open the TV’s device settings.
- Open the setting that shows the device’s Home or home assignment.
- Choose the option to remove the TV from that Home, then confirm the change.
- Wait for the television to synchronize. If the assistant controls do not update immediately, restart the TV and check Settings > Accounts and profiles > your account > Voice assistant again.
Google also documents a way to add or move the TV between Homes from the television itself: Settings > Accounts and profiles > your account > Google Home. That path is useful when you need to inspect the current Home assignment or place the TV in a different Home. It is not a promise that every TV build will show identical labels.

Removing the TV from Google Home is Google’s documented “turn off” action for Gemini for TV. There is no documented account-level selector that simply changes Gemini to Assistant while leaving every Home relationship untouched. If a menu offers only account, profile or language choices, those choices do not replace the Home-removal step.
What to expect immediately afterward
The change may not appear at the same instant on every screen. The TV needs to receive the updated Home membership over its internet connection. Leave the TV powered on and online for a few minutes, then reopen the Voice assistant page. A restart can force the device to refresh its configuration, but it is not a factory reset and does not erase apps or profiles.
If you use the TV in routines, rooms or other Google Home relationships, review those arrangements after removal. Google’s instruction establishes that Gemini for TV requires Home membership; it does not promise that every other Home integration survives with the device unassigned.
How to use Google Assistant after the change
Google’s Assistant guide says Google Assistant comes installed on Google TV devices. After the TV is no longer using Gemini for TV, use the remote to invoke Assistant:

- Keep the button or microphone active as required by your remote model.
- Speak your request into the remote’s microphone.
For example, you can ask for a search, request playback or control compatible devices using the commands supported by your account, language and installed apps. The exact response depends on the profile, language and services signed in on the TV; returning to Assistant does not guarantee that every command works in every language or app.
If the Assistant button produces no response, check that the remote is paired, its batteries work and the TV is connected to the internet. Make sure you are pressing the voice-assistant button rather than a dedicated button for a streaming service. If the remote has a physical microphone switch or a microphone permission control, it must be enabled for spoken commands.

How to restore Gemini for TV later
If you removed the TV by mistake or decide to use Gemini again, add the television to a Google Home. On the TV, Google lists the path Settings > Accounts and profiles > your account > Google Home for adding or moving the device between Homes. You can also manage the TV from the Google Home device settings.

Adding the TV back to a Home restores the Home-membership requirement, but Gemini still depends on the eligibility conditions below. Google does not describe this as a permanent lockout or as a separate “switch back” control. If the TV remains on Assistant after it has been added, check the profile, region, language, software and memory requirements rather than repeatedly removing and adding the device.
Why Gemini may be missing before you change anything
Some people who search for a Gemini setting are already using Google Assistant because their TV, profile or location does not qualify for Gemini for TV. Google lists these requirements:

These are eligibility requirements, not performance measurements. A TV can meet the Android and memory thresholds and still lack Gemini because of its country, language, profile age or Home configuration.
A non-child profile associated with someone under 18 continues to receive Google Assistant responses. Child profiles do not receive Gemini for TV. Therefore, seeing Assistant on one profile and Gemini on another can be expected behavior rather than a fault with the television.
The Home requirement also explains why simply signing into Gemini on a phone does not activate Gemini for TV. Gemini Apps on a phone, tablet or computer are separate experiences. The TV profile must be in the same Google Home as the Gemini-enabled device, in addition to meeting the TV and account requirements.
Fixes when the assistant does not change
The TV still shows Gemini after removal
- Confirm that you removed the correct TV device, not a similarly named Chromecast, speaker or duplicate entry.
- Confirm that the TV is not still assigned to another Home under a different Google account.
- Restart the TV after the Home change and revisit the Voice assistant page.
- Check that the TV is online so it can receive the updated Home membership.
- Verify that the Google Home change was confirmed successfully; closing the app before confirmation may leave the assignment unchanged.
Gemini controls disappeared, but Assistant does not respond
- Press the Assistant button rather than a streaming-service shortcut.
- Check the remote’s microphone permission or physical microphone switch, if the remote has one.
- Pair the remote again and replace weak batteries.
- Verify that the TV has an internet connection and that the selected profile is signed in.
- Try the voice command from the profile you changed, since another profile may have different age or language eligibility.
You cannot remove or move the TV
- Use the Google account that owns or manages the Home; a household member may not have permission to change device assignments.
- Open the TV’s device settings in Google Home and look for the Home assignment rather than a Gemini setting.
- From the TV, try Settings > Accounts and profiles > your account > Google Home.
- If the device appears twice, identify it by its room, model or network details before changing either entry.
- Ask the Home manager to perform the change if the current account can view but not edit the device.
The Voice assistant menu is absent
Do not assume the menu is broken. First check the TV’s Android version, RAM, country, language, profile age and Home membership against Google’s requirements. A non-child profile for a user under 18 continues to receive Google Assistant responses, and child profiles do not receive Gemini for TV.

The TV was moved to the wrong Home
Use the Google Home setting on the TV or the device settings in Google Home to identify the assigned Home. Move it to the Home used by the Google TV profile, then wait for synchronization. The relevant requirement is that the TV profile and Gemini-enabled device are in the same Home; moving a TV to an unrelated Home can leave Gemini unavailable even when the hardware qualifies.

Google uses similar names for separate products. Gemini for TV is the assistant experience on eligible Google TV devices. Gemini Apps are the Gemini experiences on phones, tablets and computers. Gemini for Home voice assistant is a separate Google Home setting that affects Home voice interactions.

Do not apply the rollback instructions for Gemini for Home to a television. Google’s separate Gemini for Home voice assistant help page says that a Home switched to Gemini for Home voice assistant cannot switch back to Assistant. That warning concerns the Home assistant context, not the documented Google TV procedure of removing a TV from Google Home.
In practical terms, removing one television from a Home is not the same as reverting the assistant for the entire Home. The separate Home-level setting can affect voice interactions in that Home, while the Google TV procedure concerns the TV’s membership and its on-device assistant experience.
What this procedure does not do
- It does not uninstall Gemini Apps from your phone, tablet or computer.
- It does not delete the Google account or remove the Google TV profile.
- It does not change the assistant on every other device in the Home.
- It does not guarantee that all Home automations or device relationships remain unchanged while the TV is outside a Home.
- It does not create a permanent prohibition on adding the TV to a Home again.
- It does not require a factory reset, a paid service or replacement hardware.
- It does not provide a hidden account-level Gemini-to-Assistant selector; Google’s documented action remains removal from Google Home.
The practical result is narrower: Google’s documented Home-membership change turns off Gemini for TV and makes Google Assistant available on that television.
