Choose Microsoft Teams if your organization already relies on Microsoft 365 and its bundled apps; choose Slack if your team’s work depends on persistent project conversations and connecting a range of third-party tools. Neither is a universal winner. Compare the plans your team would actually need, its meeting and history requirements, and the cost after existing licenses are counted.
What’s the practical difference between Slack and Teams?
Both platforms support workplace chat and meetings. Microsoft describes Teams as a place to “meet, chat, call, and collaborate.” Teams Essentials includes chat, calls, and video conferencing; Slack offers audio and video huddles. The choice is less about whether either can handle basic communication and more about where your team’s files, discussions, meetings, and administration already live.

Slack presents itself as a cross-app, asynchronous workspace and characterizes Teams as more closely tied to Microsoft 365 and live interactions. That is Slack’s product positioning, not an independent finding. Map the distinction to your own work: list the applications your staff use every day, how often they need meetings, and whether they need conversations to remain easy to find across projects.
Which platform fits your team?
Choose Teams when Microsoft 365 is already central
- Your team uses Microsoft 365 apps and wants Teams included in the same business subscription.
- Web and mobile Office apps, custom business email, and per-user cloud storage are useful parts of the package, not unwanted extras.
- Your regular work already revolves around Microsoft files, scheduled meetings, and Microsoft account administration.
Consider Slack when cross-app conversations are central
- Your team coordinates work across several third-party applications and wants conversations organized around ongoing projects.
- Persistent searchable discussions matter, so a free plan’s limited history would not meet the team’s needs.
- You prefer evaluating a collaboration workspace separately from a wider office-software subscription.
These are decision prompts, not guarantees of superior productivity or ease of use. Slack’s comparative claims about channels, integrations, external collaboration, automation, AI, and file sharing are vendor-authored; verify the current capabilities and licensing in both products before relying on a specific feature.
#1 Best Overall
- SUPPORT WORK FROM ANYWHERE WITH SYNC: Whether employees are in the office, at home, or somewhere else, Sync device management software helps everyone stay connected by letting you ensure their Logitech video collaboration personal devices are being used and up to date.
- Open workspaces are great for collaboration, but not so great when the noise around you makes it hard to concentrate. Active noise cancellation substantially reduces unwanted ambient sound, so you can get focused and stay focused.
- Great for Music and Talking with immersive sound for listening to music and a noise-canceling mic that ensures that your voice is heard on the other end of a call—not the noise around you.
- On ear controls to adjust volume, start/end calls, and invoke Teams. Plus button controls for power, active noise cancellation (ANC), wireless Bluetooth pairing, and mute on/off or use the flip-to-mute mic feature.
- Certified for Microsoft Teams ensures it’s easy to pick-up or answer Teams meetings, calls, messages, and notifications with a single press to the Teams button. Or apply a longer touch to invoke Cortana voice skills.

Compare the cost your team will actually pay
- Count the users who need paid access, and identify the specific plan tier each workflow requires.
- Check whether the organization already pays for Microsoft 365 and which Teams entitlements that subscription includes. Business Basic bundles Teams with other services, so its full price is not automatically the incremental cost of adding Teams.
- Match billing terms and account for required add-ons. Compare equivalent needs for message history, meeting features, AI, integrations and administration rather than comparing a paid Slack tier with Teams already included in an existing license.
- Confirm current regional prices, taxes and eligibility directly with the vendors before budgeting.
What should you verify before switching?
Message history and finding information
Slack Free currently has a 90-day message-history limit; paid Slack plans include unlimited history according to its pricing page. Decide how much conversation history your team must retain and search, then confirm the relevant plan’s retention, search and export controls. Do not treat “unlimited history” as a substitute for checking an organization’s retention and compliance requirements.
Meetings and outside organizations
List requirements for group meetings, recordings, transcripts, captions, guests and collaboration with outside organizations. Microsoft lists recordings and transcripts among Teams Essentials features. For either platform, confirm the exact plan and administrator settings for the external-sharing and meeting policies your team needs.

- LIGHTWEIGHT COMFORT: Experience all-day comfort with its lightweight design and foam or leatherette ear cushions that won't weigh you down during long meetings or calls.

- ONLINE MEETINGS THAT JUST WORK: Works with all leading online meeting platforms and certified for Microsoft Teams.
- SOLID SOUND: Powerful 28mm speakers deliver richer sound for a better audio experience.
Integrations, automation and AI
Write down the specific apps and automation flows employees depend on, then check whether they work in the proposed plan. Slack advertises an app directory and plan-dependent AI capabilities; Microsoft packages Teams with some Microsoft 365 plans and presents AI features or add-ons in certain offerings. Broad claims that one platform has “better AI” do not answer whether it supports your team’s tasks, access controls and budget.
Administration and security
Have the person responsible for IT or compliance compare identity controls, retention, compliance features, data controls and external-sharing settings for the actual plans under consideration. A feature’s presence alone is not a security endorsement; the plan, configuration and organizational requirements all matter.

A decision checklist
- Already licensed for Microsoft 365? Check whether Teams is included and whether a Microsoft 365 bundle’s other services justify its total cost.
- Need more than 90 days of Slack Free history? Include the appropriate paid tier in the comparison.
- Rely on specific meeting or external-collaboration features? Verify availability and controls for the precise plan before committing.
- Depend on particular integrations, automations or AI tasks? Test those workflows against the current plan documentation rather than relying on broad vendor comparisons.
- Have stricter administration or compliance needs? Ask the responsible administrator to validate controls and configuration before rollout.
For more detailed feature assertions, Slack’s March 23, 2026 comparison article and its feature comparison page are useful as statements of Slack’s position, not as independent testing. The latter says its comparison-table data is as of December 2025, so confirm current Microsoft documentation and licensing for any feature that will determine your decision.
