An old security camera can still be useful if its firmware, app, power supply and network connection are supported—and if you can secure its access. Before moving it, check the exact model’s manual and current support page. Then match the camera’s actual capabilities to one of these nine possible uses; no single camera is guaranteed to support them all.
What to check before reusing an old security camera
Start with the model number and hardware revision, then check the manufacturer’s manual and support page for current firmware, app compatibility, power requirements, mounting limits, indoor or outdoor rating, and available recording options. The Federal Trade Commission recommends checking for software updates and using a current viewing app. A camera that still powers on may not have a supported app or secure firmware.

- Secure it first: Change default or reused passwords to a unique, strong password. Turn on available encryption, firewall and two-factor authentication options.
- Limit network exposure: Consider putting cameras on a separate network. The UK National Cyber Security Centre advises considering disabling UPnP and port forwarding on the router.
- Decide whether remote access is necessary: Remote viewing adds convenience, but also affects privacy. The NCSC warns that “Live feeds or images from smart cameras can (in rare cases) be accessed by unauthorised users, putting your privacy at risk.”
- Check the view: UK domestic CCTV guidance recommends periodically checking camera position so it captures the intended area while minimising intrusion into other people’s privacy.

What can you do with an old security camera?
1. Check on pets
If the camera and its viewing app still work, a live view can help you check a pet’s room or resting area. Position it to respect household privacy, and confirm whether audio or remote viewing is enabled before using it. The FTC lists pet monitoring as a common camera use.

2. Add a nursery view
A camera may provide a view of a nursery, but it is not automatically a suitable baby monitor and should not replace safe sleep practices or other safety measures. Choose a placement that avoids capturing private areas unnecessarily, and check who can access the feed. The FTC discusses baby monitors alongside security cameras and advises care around private spaces.
3. Watch a porch or entry area
A camera can provide a view of a doorway or delivery area if its field of view, mount and power supply suit the location. Aim it at your property rather than unnecessarily recording neighbours or public space. Recheck the angle periodically as the surroundings change.

4. Monitor a garage or workshop
A powered camera with a suitable view can let you visually check a work area or tools. Treat it as a video view, not as a fire, hazard or theft detector unless the exact model has a verified feature for that purpose.

Use a camera outdoors only if its published rating and power arrangement are suitable for the conditions where it will be installed. An indoor camera should not be assumed to withstand rain, dust or temperature changes.

6. Get a closer view of a bird feeder or birdbath
This can be a useful close-up observation project if the camera can be mounted and powered there and its lens and focus work at the intended distance. An outdoor-rated model may be needed; any enclosure must also be suitable for that camera and location.
7. Check a household task area
A view of a laundry, storage or hobby area can help with a quick visual check. Do not assume a camera will detect that an appliance has finished or recognise another event: a camera that only supplies video may not interpret what it sees.

8. Set up a temporary project view
Reposition a camera for a short-lived household project or event when its mount, power and viewing method allow it. Secure the feed while it is in use, then remove temporary user access and return the camera to a secure configuration afterward.
9. Connect it to a compatible local recorder
Some IP cameras can send video to a self-hosted recorder, but support depends on the exact camera model, firmware and protocols. Look up the precise product and software version in the ONVIF conformant products database, then check that the recorder supports the same protocol. A product listing that merely says “ONVIF” does not by itself establish compatibility. Revere’s documentation describes support for ONVIF and RTSP cameras, but that does not prove that a particular camera will work with a particular recorder: Revere camera compatibility.

Compare the camera’s documented capabilities with the location and the kind of access you actually need. Manufacturer specifications show that features such as indoor or outdoor use, privacy zones and microSD recording differ by model.

| Protocol and storage | For a local recorder, check exact model and firmware compatibility. For a memory card, check the camera’s card type and capacity limits before buying. |
For example, TP-Link lists microSD local storage up to 512 GB for its Tapo C103. That is the published limit for that model, not a general limit for security cameras. See the Tapo C103 specifications and confirm the limits for your own camera before purchasing a card.
