If a Skyrim quest marker is missing or seems stuck, first select the quest you actually want to follow in the Quests log, then use Show on Map to check its target. If the objective depends on a frozen or absent NPC, leave the area and return later. These checks help distinguish a display or selection issue from a quest that may be stuck.
1. Confirm the right quest is active
Open the Quests log, select the quest you intend to follow, and read its current objective. Skyrim’s manual documents that active quests supply the active quest targets shown on the compass and maps. Bethesda Support likewise advises checking the Quests log and available markers when you are unsure how to proceed: Bethesda Support: Skyrim Special Edition quest guidance.

Do not assume that every entry in the journal, especially a miscellaneous objective, is currently supplying the target you expect. Select the relevant quest or objective, then check the compass and map again. The manual describes the game behavior for the PS3 release; its button prompts should not be treated as universal instructions for current platforms or editions.
2. Check the destination with Show on Map
With the intended quest selected, use Show on Map in the journal. The Skyrim manual says this opens the world map and displays the quest target. If the target appears there but not where you expected on the HUD, you have located the objective and can travel toward the map destination. If no target appears, recheck the selected objective before concluding that the quest itself is broken. Skyrim PS3 manual.

If you choose to fast travel from the map, do not do so while a special animation is in progress, such as mounting a carriage or sitting in a chair. Bethesda documents that using Show on Map to fast travel during such an animation can leave controls locked after loading. If that happens, load a save from before the fast travel and wait for the animation to end before trying again: Bethesda Support: fast-travel control-lock guidance.
3. Refresh a missing or frozen quest NPC
If the next objective requires an NPC who is absent or not moving, travel away from the area and return later. Bethesda recommends exploring elsewhere and coming back; its guidance says the area should reset. Check the NPC and objective again after returning. This is a low-impact step, but it is not a guaranteed fix for every broken quest state.

In some saves, Bethesda says actions that were attempted earlier can be queued and resolve later after a game update. If old actions are visibly catching up, wait in a safe area or pause until the activity stops, then make a new save. This advice applies to the delayed-action condition Bethesda describes; it is not an explanation for every missing marker: Bethesda Support: delayed actions after an update.

5. Retry from an earlier save if the quest remains broken
If the objective still will not progress after checking the active quest, map target, and relevant NPC, Bethesda’s guidance is to reload an earlier save and try again. Make a separate manual save first if possible, so you can return to your current progress if needed. An earlier save may discard everything done since it was created, so use this only when the less disruptive checks have not helped: Bethesda Support: Skyrim Special Edition quest guidance.

There is no single confirmed marker-visibility toggle or menu path established here for every Skyrim platform and edition. The PS3 manual documents quest selection and map targets, but it does not confirm current menu labels for Special Edition, Anniversary Edition, PC, or current consoles. If the marker remains absent—or the game is modded—include your platform, edition, quest name, and installed mods when seeking a specific fix; the steps above do not establish a mod-specific remedy.
