Level type is not a difficulty slider, however. It selects the terrain, starting space and progression rules. SkyFactory 4 has more than 30 world types, including Skygrid, Compactsky, Lostcities, Tutorial and Peace Out, so the right choice depends on how your players want to begin. On a dedicated server, change both generator-settings and level-type, then generate a new world; changing properties while reusing an existing world will not safely convert it.

What a SkyFactory 4 level type controls
A level type is a world-generation preset. It determines what players see when they first spawn, how much working room they have and which progression assumptions the pack makes. The maintained MineYourMind SkyFactory 4 server documentation lists more than 30 world types, while the world-type reference describes their starting environments.

Difficulty changes hostile-mob behavior and related survival rules; a level type changes the world itself. Some presets also carry dedicated advancements or progression conditions. The pack’s language resources include separate advancement text for Tutorial, Skygrid, Compact Machines, Pacifist and Prestige-related play, so these are not merely alternate seeds or cosmetic terrain choices: they can change what a server expects players to do.
generator-settings and level-type do different jobs
In server.properties, generator-settings supplies the preset data used by the SkyFactory terrain generator. level-type selects the generator path Minecraft should use. For the standard Classic setup, the hosting instructions specify both of these values:

level-type=DEFAULTDo not assume that the Classic values work for every preset. Alternate types can require a different preset string, capitalization or spelling. Use the exact value documented for the SkyFactory 4 pack version installed on your server; a value that looks almost right can make the server fall back to ordinary terrain.
Classic: the baseline choice
Classic is the conventional SkyFactory 4 experience: players begin with a tree-based skyblock setup and build outward through resource automation and mod progression. It is the best starting point when a group wants the progression most guides, quest discussions and existing server knowledge assume.

New players can recognize the basic loop—secure a platform, expand safely, automate resources and unlock the next systems—without learning a grid, a sealed compact room or a city-dome environment first. For a public or mixed-experience server, that familiarity usually matters more than novelty.
Classic is not automatically the easiest mode. Skyblock still imposes severe space, fall and resource constraints, and optional Prestige can add another progression layer. Treat Classic as the standard environment, not as a promise that every mod or item is available immediately.

How the major alternatives differ
The practical differences are starting terrain, usable space, resource access, progression pressure and multiplayer risk. The table below uses the documented descriptions and then translates them into server-owner consequences without treating one preset as universally superior.

Availability is version-sensitive. The official CurseForge listing describes continuing additions to world types and modes, so a name found in an older guide may be absent, renamed or configured differently in the pack version you installed.
Choosing a level type for your server
Choose Classic for a conventional community
Use Classic when your priority is compatibility with established tutorials, a predictable skyblock opening and room for players to build separate bases. It is the least surprising option for a server whose members have different levels of modded-Minecraft experience.
Choose Tutorial when onboarding is the main problem
Tutorial is appropriate when the server’s first hours matter more than long-term novelty. Its dedicated advancements give new players an explicit sequence to follow. Make the choice deliberately: a group that already knows SkyFactory may prefer Classic and can teach newcomers through normal play.

Choose Skygrid or Compactsky for deliberate constraints
Skygrid makes navigation and collection the challenge; Compactsky makes usable volume the challenge. Select Skygrid when you want movement between separated resources to shape the run. Select Compactsky when the intended story is expansion from a tiny enclosure into a larger automated facility. Neither should be presented as a cosmetic variation of Classic.
Choose Lostcities or a themed preset for an event identity
Lostcities and the village, ocean, lava, bedrock, stone, TNT and low-light themes give a server an immediate visual or survival identity. They work well for seasonal worlds, but the owner should first establish where players can stand, how they obtain early resources and what hazards exist at spawn. A one-hour prelaunch test can reveal problems that a preset name does not.
Use Peace Out when the social rule is the feature
Peace Out suits a group that wants a pacifist run rather than ordinary combat progression. State that goal in the server description and welcome message; otherwise players may interpret the non-combat behavior as a configuration error.
Changing the level type on a dedicated server
The documented hosting procedure requires a new world. Changing properties while the old world remains selected does not retrofit its terrain. Follow this order:

- Stop the server completely. Do not edit generation settings while the server is writing chunks. Wait for the process to exit.
- Back up the configuration and world. Copy
server.propertiesand the current world directory to separate storage. This gives you a rollback if the new preset behaves unexpectedly. - Open
server.properties. Edit bothgenerator-settingsandlevel-type; changing only one leaves the pair inconsistent. - Enter the exact preset values. For Classic, use
generator-settings={"Topography-Preset":"Sky Factory 4"}andlevel-type=DEFAULT. For another type, copy the precise syntax supplied for that pack version instead of improvising a name. - Change the world name. Set a new value for the server’s world-name entry, normally the
level-nameproperty. A new name prevents Minecraft from loading the existing world directory and forces fresh generation. - Save the file without smart quotes or extra spaces. Keep each property on its own line. If your host provides a web panel, save the file there and confirm that the panel did not rewrite the value.
- Start the server. Watch the console for world-generation messages and allow the first startup to finish; generating a new dimension can take longer than a normal restart.
- Verify the result in game. Check the spawn environment, the first available resources and any tutorial or challenge advancements. Confirm that the result matches the intended preset before restoring a public connection.
The SkyFactory 4 configuration guide also emphasizes stopping the server, changing both properties, changing the world name and then starting the server. Reusing an existing world is not a safe conversion method: old chunks retain their original terrain and inventories, while newly generated chunks can follow different rules.

Why a server generates a normal world
A normal overworld usually means the generator settings were not applied to the world that actually started. Check these causes in order:
- Only one property was changed. SkyFactory’s documented Classic configuration uses both
generator-settingsandlevel-type. Restore the pair and restart from a stopped state. - The old world name was retained. If
level-namestill points to an existing folder, Minecraft loads that world instead of generating a new one. Rename the world value and keep the old folder as your backup. - The preset text is wrong. Spelling, capitalization and punctuation matter. Compare every character with the documentation for your installed pack version; do not substitute a shortened label such as a display name.
- The wrong configuration file was edited. Some hosts expose multiple server instances or separate global and per-instance property editors. Confirm that the file belongs to the running SkyFactory 4 instance.
- The server was not fully restarted. A panel can report a restart while an old Java process is still alive. Stop it, wait for termination, save the file and start again.
- The pack and guide versions differ. SkyFactory 4 documentation and its available modes have changed over time. If a documented preset is unavailable, check the installed pack’s world-type list rather than forcing an obsolete value.
Do not try to repair a mixed world by deleting random region files. Restore the backup, choose a fresh world name and regenerate cleanly; selective deletion can leave players with mismatched terrain, entities and progression data.
Prestige: an optional progression layer
Prestige is separate from the physical starting terrain. The official pack listing describes it as an open progression system that can unlock mods, items and mechanics. Players can earn points through advancements or the Parabox, then spend those points to open additional content.
The project’s prestige configuration allows Prestige Mode to be toggled per world. A world can therefore use a familiar terrain preset while applying Prestige’s unlock rules, or run without Prestige for a more open start. Decide this before launch because early access to mods changes the server’s economy and automation path.

Prestige data is scoped to the server in multiplayer. The Prestige points reference notes that points and unlocks persist across prestige-enabled worlds, while multiplayer Prestige applies only to that server. Players should not expect a global account-wide pool that follows them to unrelated servers.
Prelaunch checklist for owners
- Write down the exact SkyFactory 4 pack version and the intended preset.
- Decide whether the server is conventional, tutorial-led, pacifist, compact, grid-based or themed.
- Back up the current world before changing any generation setting.
- Stop the server before editing
server.properties. - Set both
generator-settingsandlevel-type. - Assign a new
level-nameso a clean world is generated. - Start privately and verify spawn, early resources, hazards and advancement behavior.
- Record the working values so a later restart or host migration reproduces the same world type.
For most owners, the decision is straightforward: use Classic when you want the expected SkyFactory 4 experience, Tutorial when teaching is the priority, Skygrid or Compactsky when the constraint is intentional, and a themed or pacifist preset when that rule defines the event. Whatever you choose, treat the preset as part of the world’s identity and generate it cleanly from the start.
