Stream delivers live TV over the internet and uses a playlist rather than recordings. Neither is universally better: the right fit depends on your connection, viewing habits, package and eligibility.
How Sky Q and Sky Stream deliver TV
The main difference is the route the programmes take to your screen. Sky Q receives live TV by satellite or cable, while using the internet for on-demand viewing and apps. Sky Stream delivers all its content, including live TV, over the internet. Sky sets out these distinctions in its product comparison and product overview.

| What matters | Sky Q | Sky Stream |
|---|---|---|
| Live-TV delivery | Satellite or cable; internet supports apps and on-demand services | Internet only |
| Watching later | Records programmes to an internal hard drive | Playlist gathers content available on demand or through partner services; it is not a local recording |
| Installation | Requires a satellite or cable connection; internet is needed for apps and on-demand services | Self-install with internet, an HDMI television and power |
| Internet outage | Live reception by satellite or cable can continue, but internet features may not | Internet is the delivery path, so availability and connection quality affect viewing |
| Extra rooms | Sky Q app on supported devices or a Sky Q Mini receiver | Sky describes up to two additional boxes with its multiscreen option; account and package terms apply |
| Typical fit | Homes with an existing or planned dish/cable connection, or viewers who record programmes | Homes avoiding dish/cable installation, with reliable broadband and viewers comfortable with playlists |
When Sky Q is the better fit
You want to record programmes locally
Sky Q has a hard drive for recordings. If you regularly save broadcasts to watch later, that is a material difference: Sky Stream has no recording function. Its playlist collects shows available on demand or from partner services, and playing them still requires internet access and continued content availability.

You prefer live TV that is not wholly dependent on broadband
Because Q receives live TV over satellite or cable, live reception can continue through an internet outage, although apps and on-demand features rely on the internet. This distinction may matter where broadband is unreliable, but it does not establish that Q is more reliable overall or guarantee uninterrupted service.
When Sky Stream is the better fit
You do not want a dish or cable installation
Sky Stream is designed for self-installation: it needs an internet connection, an HDMI television and power. It supports Wi-Fi and can also connect by LAN; an Ethernet cable is optional, not a requirement for every home. Sky describes Stream as entertainment over Wi-Fi without a dish in its product overview.
You are comfortable using a playlist instead of recordings
A Stream playlist is a way to gather shows that are available through on-demand services or partners; it does not store a broadcast on the box. This suits viewers who find what they want from on-demand libraries, but not those who need a local recording to watch independently of internet access.
UHD, broadband and picture quality
Both services offer UHD/4K for supported content, but that does not mean every programme is available in UHD. Sky says Stream UHD requires a compatible 4K TV and the Ultra HD and Dolby Atmos pack. Sky’s FAQ lists minimum speeds of 30 Mbps for UHD and 35 Mbps for UHD with Whole Home; the package page also states a 30 Mbps minimum for the pack. These are Sky’s stated requirements, not a promise that UHD will remain uninterrupted on every home connection. See the Sky Stream FAQ and package details.

Sky’s official product information establishes support for some UHD on both services, not a universal picture-quality winner. It does not establish measured differences in bitrate, latency or performance. Actual viewing depends on the programme, display and, for Stream, the connection.

Sky’s UK package page checked on 7 October 2026 lists these advertised new-customer prices. Sky says prices may change; contract length, eligibility, package inclusions and add-ons affect what a particular household pays.
| Package | 24-month term | Rolling 31-day plan | Stated standard rolling price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essential TV | £15/month | £18/month | £21/month |
| Ultimate TV | £24/month | £30/month | £38/month |
The Ultra HD and Dolby Atmos pack is listed at £6 per month. Check what the selected package includes and whether the pack is needed for the UHD content you want. For current terms and eligibility, use Sky’s package page. The figures above are not a directly comparable total price for Q versus Stream: the actual total depends on the service, package, contract and add-ons.

Check app access and extra-room terms
Multiroom limits and app entitlements depend on the setup and package. Sky’s comparison describes Sky Q app viewing on specified devices and a Sky Q Mini receiver; for Stream it describes up to two additional boxes with its multiscreen option. Confirm the current limit and offer for your account rather than assuming every setup includes them.

The announcement makes eligibility conditional on the customer’s service and package, so the presence of an app in Sky’s line-up does not mean it is included for every Q or Stream customer. Check Sky’s announcement alongside the terms for the package you are considering.
Quick Recap
Make the choice for your home
