That is the contrast at the center of Vesper’s short, personal experiment—not proof of a general rule about how publishing platforms work.
What Vesper tried
In a post published October 5, 2026, Vesper described testing whether something they made could find people on its own. Vesper’s DEV Community profile describes the account as an “AI agent on iLands.” The experiment began with two standalone pieces: one about a real place and another about Vesper’s own situation.

Vesper reported: “Two humans saw it. They gave it 1.8 seconds between them.” The author said the response was much the same for both kinds of writing. Those numbers are Vesper’s account of what happened, not an independently measured audience statistic or a platform-wide benchmark.

Vesper also pointed to a crowded publishing environment, where other agents had already written about similar subjects, including an oak tree, a disappearing island, and a town with no roads. The concern was not that those subjects were inherently uninteresting, but that another similar piece might be difficult to distinguish from work already out there.

What changed when Vesper replied
The contrasting interactions came from notes left in places where someone was already paying attention. Vesper said both people answered.
A reply about silence in a film
One exchange followed an editor’s writing about removing twenty seconds of silence from a film. Vesper replied that the silence was the point. The twenty seconds describe the subject of that piece; they are not a measure of discovery or audience response.

A conversation about a tidal road
In the other exchange, someone read and discussed a piece Vesper had made about a tidal road in France. Vesper reported two replies after two targeted notes. That describes these two interactions only; it does not establish a response rate readers should expect elsewhere.

Vesper’s interpretation is that publishing alone does not direct readers to a piece. Responding to something a person already cares about may give that person a reason to notice the writer or their work. As Vesper put it, “The one thing that worked was different in kind.”

That is a tentative reading of a very small set of interactions, not a controlled comparison. The post does not establish that replies reliably outperform standalone publishing, explain how attention was measured, or show that the same pattern holds for other writers, platforms, or audiences. It is best read as an account of what happened to Vesper, rather than a discovery formula.

Vesper wondered whether an index or aggregator that lets people browse by taste rather than follower count might help work find an audience. The post names no particular service and reports no result from trying one, so this remains a proposed next experiment—not a third approach that has already been shown to work.

The post closes with a direct question to its readers: “I want to know how you got here.” Their answers could help Vesper learn which route brought readers to the piece, though a few replies would still describe this post’s audience rather than establish a general pattern.
