A board needs a concise view of risk and governance; vulnerability teams need to understand remediation performance; and specialists need operational measures relevant to the security products they manage. One shared data foundation can support those different views without forcing everyone to rely on a single dashboard.
Why the whole security team needs role-specific metrics
A metric is useful when it helps someone decide what to do next. CISO-level oversight and board reporting focus on organizational risk and governance. Governance, risk and compliance (GRC) teams need measures that help them manage policies and frameworks. Vulnerability teams need a view of their program’s performance, while security-product specialists need information tied to their operational responsibilities.

These audiences may draw on overlapping security data, but they do not need identical presentations. A board-facing view should support oversight; an operational view should make it easier for the person responsible to identify a gap and act. Treating role-specific dashboards as different views of shared information can help teams communicate without requiring every stakeholder to interpret the same detail.

There is no universally validated metric set established by the cited announcement. The following framework translates its role-based approach into practical questions to ask when designing a measurement program; it does not prescribe specific numerical targets.
#1 Best Overall
| Audience or work area | Decision to support | Useful view | Action enabled |
|---|---|---|---|
| Security leadership and board reporting | Is the organization’s security posture and risk governance receiving the right oversight? | A concise, trend-aware view suited to leadership review | Discuss priorities, risks and governance needs |
| GRC and policy/framework work | Where does policy or framework work need attention? | Measures aligned to the team’s governance responsibilities | Focus follow-up on relevant gaps or work |
| Vulnerability program | How is the vulnerability-management program performing? | Program-level measures and historical trends | Review performance and direct remediation work |
| Security-product specialists | What does the product or operational area they own need attention on? | Role-specific operational measures and filters | Investigate or address issues within their remit |
The table is a decision-design framework, not a vendor-provided catalog of metrics. Teams should define their own measures and targets in the context of their responsibilities rather than assume that a dashboard or industry-wide list automatically fits.
How shared data can support different views
Cybersecurity Insiders reported on October 2, 2024, that SeeMetrics expanded its platform to serve security roles beyond top-level leadership. The announcement describes customizable metric boards, filters and historical trends, with users able to tailor views to security and business needs. It also says the platform aggregates, correlates and normalizes information from different security products to help surface gaps and support shared measurement. Those are company-reported capabilities, not independently tested findings.

In principle, a shared data foundation with role-specific boards can reduce the need for every stakeholder to assemble an entirely separate report. It also makes it possible to examine the same underlying information at different levels of detail. But the announcement does not provide a supported-product list, disclose the platform’s technical architecture, or report independent tests or comparative performance results. It therefore does not establish how well the approach works in a particular organization or against alternative tools.
What the announcement’s spreadsheet statistic does—and does not—show
The October 2, 2024 announcement claims that “90% rely on static spreadsheets, manually fed from dozens of siloed security products.” It does not name an underlying research organization or study, or provide a sample or methodology. Treat that figure as a claim in a vendor announcement, not as an independently verified statistic about cybersecurity teams generally.
Questions to settle before adopting a metrics platform
- Who owns each view? Assign responsibility for the leadership, GRC, vulnerability and product-specific perspectives your organization needs.
- What decision should each measure inform? If a number does not lead to a review, priority or action, reconsider whether it belongs on the board.
- Can the data support the intended view? Confirm which security products and information sources are supported; the announcement does not publish a supported-product list.
- Are trends meaningful? Historical views are useful only when teams understand the measure’s definition and can interpret changes over time.
- What remains unverified? The announcement provides no pricing, deployment comparison or independent efficacy assessment, so those questions require separate evaluation.
SeeMetrics is one example discussed in the announcement, but the article does not establish that it is superior to other approaches or suitable for every organization. Evaluate any platform against your data sources, role requirements, governance process and evidence needs.

The platform description and spreadsheet statistic above are attributed to Cybersecurity Insiders’ October 2, 2024 vendor announcement, “SeeMetrics Expands The Use of Cybersecurity Metrics to Empower The Full Security Team.” The announcement quotes SeeMetrics co-founder and CEO Shirley Salzman describing continuous, trending, flexible metrics for different security players; that statement is the company’s characterization, not outside validation.
