A vulnerability alert is not, by itself, proof that your site has been breached; treat it as a specific issue to verify and resolve.
What a SiteLock vulnerability alert tells you
SiteLock says its Vulnerability Scan checks a site’s CMS, plugins, themes, and other extensions for reported vulnerabilities. A result may identify the vulnerability type, affected software or URL, and suggested mitigation. Its documented categories include Platform, XSS, and SQL Injection. For example, an XSS finding concerns a risk of script injection that can have consequences such as user-data theft, session hijacking, site defacement, or malware distribution. The dashboard also shows a site-level status, ranging from Healthy through At Risk, Impaired, and Compromised. Use that status as context, not as a diagnosis of a particular breach. Open the detailed result and record the affected URL or component, vulnerability type, scan time, severity if displayed, and recommended mitigation. - Save the details. Export or preserve the report if that option is available. Note the affected URL or file, software name and installed version, vulnerability type, severity if shown, scan date, and SiteLock’s recommendation. Do not delete files or edit code based only on an unclear summary.
- Confirm the component and its version. Check the CMS, plugin, theme, or extension named in the result, then consult that software vendor’s current release and security guidance. SiteLock’s general recommendation is to update CMS core, plugins, and themes. The right patch or workaround depends on the specific component and version; there is no universal fix for every alert. SiteLock explains its scan results and general mitigation guidance.
- Apply a supported fix with a safe change plan. Install the vendor-supported update or mitigation. Remove plugins and themes the site no longer uses, and obtain software from trusted sources. For consequential production changes, coordinate a backup and maintenance window with the site administrator or hosting provider. SiteLock’s follow-up guidance recommends updating software and removing unused extensions.
- Scan again and check the result. Run the relevant SiteLock scan after the change and see whether the finding remains. If it persists or you cannot interpret it, share the report with SiteLock Support or your host. SiteLock says vulnerability results include mitigation recommendations.
- Address malware separately if it is also reported. A vulnerability is a weakness; malware detection is a separate finding. SiteLock describes separate vulnerability, file, database, and webpage scans. Its file-scan results distinguish malicious files found, cleaned files, and suspicious files. SiteLock cautions that suspicious content has a high false-positive rate, so that label alone does not establish an infection. If malware is confirmed, remove it and fix the weakness that could have enabled it: cleanup alone does not close the entry point, and SiteLock warns that an unresolved vulnerability can lead to reinfection. - Review account security and recovery options. Follow any cleanup instructions, strengthen account security—including enabling a second authentication factor where available—and keep a known-good backup. Before major repairs, ask your host what restoration options are available. A scan or cleanup does not guarantee that future incidents will be prevented. SiteLock’s follow-up steps discuss account security and post-cleanup actions.
When to contact SiteLock or your host
Ask for help if you cannot identify the affected component, the alert remains after a supported update, the site is unavailable or appears compromised, or malware is reported. SiteLock describes product scanning and patching as well as manual analyst review and cleanup; what is available depends on the customer’s plan. Before authorizing hands-on changes, confirm the service scope and required access. How to prioritize more than one finding
If a scan reports several issues, assess them using the same practical factors rather than relying on the site-level status alone:
- Exposure: Which URL, component, and installed version are affected?
- Nature of the finding: What vulnerability type and severity does the report show, and is there separate evidence of exploitation or malware?
- Available fix: Does the software vendor provide a patch or workaround for that version?
- Change risk: What downtime or operational risk could the fix create, and can it be scheduled with a backup and maintenance plan?
- Support scope: If you need help, what access and service scope does the available support require?
