What is used depends on the assistant’s feature, device, account connections, permissions, and settings. It also matters whether speech is handled on the device, sent to company servers, associated with an account, or kept as activity history: those are separate operations.
What personal data can Siri and Google Assistant use?
The companies describe different sets of context that their assistants may use to interpret requests or carry out actions. These disclosures do not mean every category is accessed for every request.

Where does the speech go?
Siri: on-device where possible
Apple says Siri processes audio entirely on the device whenever possible. Otherwise, audio may be sent to Apple servers for processing. For supported Google speakers and displays, Google says the device processes short audio snippets while in standby to detect an activation phrase. After activation, the request is sent to Google servers. Google says Assistant interactions are encrypted in transit; supported devices with a microphone switch can also be muted physically. Are assistant requests tied to an account?
Siri uses a rotating device identifier for request history
Apple says Siri request history is associated with a random identifier generated by the device, which rotates multiple times per hour, rather than the Apple Account or email address. Apple may retain and use that history for up to two years for product development and improvement; a subset reviewed for that purpose may be kept longer. History stored on the device may also personalize Siri. Apple’s Siri, Dictation & Privacy notice
Google can save interaction text to the Google Account
When Web & App Activity is enabled, Google says Assistant interaction text and related information from linked devices and services may be saved to the Google Account and viewed or deleted in My Activity. Google provides auto-delete periods of 3, 18, or 36 months. These are account activity controls, not the same setting as saving audio recordings. Google Assistant privacy controls

How do recording and improvement settings differ?
Apple’s opt-in improvement settings
Apple says audio is not stored unless the user opts in to Improve Siri and Dictation. A separate Improve Siri & Apple Intelligence notice describes an opt-in that may include audio, transcripts, responses, and related request data. Apple says this material is not associated with the Apple Account and personal details are removed. If an interaction is selected for review, employees may access context directly relevant to judging the response, such as contact or installed-app names; Apple says only employees subject to confidentiality obligations can access audio interactions. Google’s Voice & Audio Activity control can save audio from interactions with Google Search, Assistant, and Maps in the Google Account to improve audio recognition and reduce unintended activations. Google also says Assistant query text and related information may be reviewed for quality and improvement; that text review should not be confused with whether audio recordings are saved. Which settings limit access or saved activity?
On iPhone, iPad, and Apple devices
- Review Siri Location Services if you do not want approximate location included with Siri requests.
- Check Siri settings for the on-device processing indicator and available processing options.
- Choose whether to opt in to Improve Siri and Dictation or the separate Improve Siri & Apple Intelligence program.
- Turning Siri and Dictation off deletes on-device transcripts and associated Siri identifier data, but Apple says requests older than six months and a small reviewed sample may not be deleted because they are no longer associated with the identifier.
- Control whether individual apps can use protected information such as contacts, location, and photos in the device’s privacy permissions.

With Google Assistant
- Use Web & App Activity controls for account-linked activity and its My Activity history.
- Review Voice & Audio Activity separately if you want to control saved audio.
- Adjust contact information, app information, Personal Results, and Voice Match controls to limit relevant personalization or data use.
- Use Guest Mode to use Assistant without saving Assistant activity to the account or using it for personalization.
- Delete activity in My Activity or choose an available auto-delete period. On supported speakers and displays with a microphone switch, mute the mic physically when desired.

Do app permissions prevent an assistant from accessing everything?
No single disclosure means unrestricted access to all data on a phone or account. Apple says Siri checks user-controlled app permissions before passing protected information to an app extension. For example, an app without contact access does not receive a resolved relationship for a request such as “my mother.” A particular request may pass the contact or location detail an app extension needs, subject to the relevant permission. Apple SiriKit documentation
Google describes Assistant use of linked services and account controls, including contact and app information, Personal Results, and Voice Match. The practical access available therefore depends on what services are linked and which settings and permissions are enabled. Google Assistant privacy controls
