SingleFileZ vs. SingleFile for Chrome: Which Should You Use?

SingleFile is the current Chrome choice. Learn how its standard HTML and self-extracting formats differ, and what to check before opening saved pages elsewhere.

For a new Chrome install, choose SingleFile. The SingleFileZ project says it has been completely merged into SingleFile, which now offers the self-extracting file format associated with SingleFileZ alongside its standard single-file HTML output. The important choice is therefore which format to save—not which separate extension to install.

What changed: SingleFileZ is now part of SingleFile

The SingleFileZ project repository says, “SingleFileZ has been completely merged into SingleFile,” and directs users to SingleFile’s options to choose self-extracting files or import existing settings. SingleFileZ project repository

For Chrome users deciding what to install today, SingleFile is the practical choice. It is a web extension and command-line tool that saves a complete webpage into one HTML file, and its project lists Chrome among its supported browsers. SingleFile project README

Which SingleFile format should you use?

Both formats produce one file, but package page resources differently. Choose according to how you plan to open, extract, search, or share the saved page.

  • Operating System: Windows 11 Pro (64-bit)
Format What it contains Opening and portability considerations
Standard HTML One HTML file. SingleFile says it minifies HTML and styles and removes unused HTML and styles. The project says it can be viewed without an extension and without running JavaScript.
Self-extracting One compressed file; binary resources are not encoded in base64. The archive can be unzipped to extract page resources. JavaScript must run to open this type of file. The README’s extension-free viewing note is tied to its “universal” self-extracting format, not a blanket guarantee for every output or Chrome setup. An option must be enabled for the document’s page text to be indexable.

These format distinctions and qualifications come from the SingleFile README. If you need to open files on another computer or browser, save a representative page in the format you intend to use and reopen it in that exact setup before archiving a collection.

Will Chrome open a saved file locally?

Do not assume that every file described as self-extracting behaves alike. The older SingleFileZ FAQ says Chrome could not open SingleFileZ files directly from the filesystem without a command-line switch or the extension; it also says the restriction did not apply when those files were hosted on a server. That older statement describes SingleFileZ’s documented behavior. Current SingleFile documentation lists a “universal” self-extracting format that can be viewed without installing an extension, with a qualification in its format notes. Use the current options and test your intended file-opening workflow instead of applying the older limitation—or the newer option—to all files indiscriminately. SingleFile README

How to save a webpage with SingleFile in Chrome

  1. Install SingleFile from the Chrome Web Store.
  2. Open the page you want to preserve, then use SingleFile’s toolbar button to save the current tab. The project also documents context-menu saving for the current tab, selected content, and selected frames.
  3. Choose the file format in SingleFile’s options. Use standard HTML when you want a straightforward HTML file that does not need JavaScript to view; choose self-extracting when compression or extracting page resources matters.
  4. Check where the file was saved: SingleFile’s documented default is the browser’s configured download folder.
  5. Open the saved file in the browser and setup you expect to use. For self-extracting output, confirm that JavaScript is allowed and that the chosen “universal” option is suitable if you need extension-free viewing.

For collections or important records, verify a sample page before relying on a format. A saved page may not reproduce every live-site behavior, and browser security restrictions can prevent extensions from saving some protected domains. SingleFileZ FAQ

Other SingleFile workflows

SingleFile is not limited to clicking the toolbar button on one open tab. Its README documents saving selected content or frames, selected links, and multiple tabs; adding annotations; automatic saving; and a Ctrl+Shift+Y keyboard shortcut. The Chrome Web Store listing also describes uploads to Google Drive, Dropbox, GitHub, or WebDAV through the options page. The README specifically documents Google Drive and GitHub options, so check the current extension settings for the destinations available to you.

Remote destinations are optional: a locally saved file does not require enabling an upload. The SingleFileZ FAQ says its extension processes pages in the browser and does not upload data to third-party servers; that is the project’s privacy statement, not an independent audit. Saving speed, completeness, and privacy trade-offs

The SingleFileZ FAQ says its default configuration is optimized for smaller pages and that some optimization settings can slow saving. It identifies disabling removal of hidden elements or unused styles as ways to reduce time and CPU use, while warning that turning off frame or deferred-image handling can omit content. It also notes that saving may download resources present on a page even if they are not visible or cached. These are project-reported behaviors; the FAQ gives no measured timing or comparative benchmark. SingleFileZ FAQ

The same FAQ characterizes saving and opening SingleFileZ files as somewhat slower than SingleFile, but provides no numbers. Since SingleFileZ has been merged and current SingleFile offers multiple output formats, treat that as a qualitative statement about the older project, not a quantified comparison of every current configuration.

Troubleshooting common problems

  • The page does not save: Some protected domains block browser extensions from saving their content. The SingleFileZ FAQ describes this as a browser security restriction; there is no universal setting that guarantees capture of every protected page. FAQ
  • A self-extracting file will not open: Confirm JavaScript is enabled for the saved file and that you selected the intended format. The older SingleFileZ FAQ’s Chrome filesystem restriction may not describe current SingleFile’s “universal” format, so test with the current format options rather than assuming all self-extracting files work identically. README
  • The saved page is missing frames or deferred images: Check the relevant capture options before saving again; the SingleFileZ FAQ warns that disabling frame or deferred-image handling can omit content. FAQ
  • The output takes longer than expected: The older FAQ says some optimization settings add work, especially for smaller pages. Disabling hidden-element or unused-style removal may reduce processing, but can change what the archive preserves. No published timing benchmark is provided. FAQ
  • The file is not where expected: Check Chrome’s configured download folder; that is SingleFile’s documented default save location. README

Screenshot alternative for developers: ScreenshotNeo

SingleFile preserves a page as HTML; if you instead need a screenshot or PDF from a URL in an application or AI-agent workflow, ScreenshotNeo is the alternative to try first. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its clean-shot options accept cookie/consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, with response headers indicating the verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.

One-call cURL example (replace the target URL as needed; see the ScreenshotNeo documentation):

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo offers 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Learn about ScreenshotNeo or sign up free.
