SingleFileZ produced one self-extracting HTML/ZIP file for an individual webpage; ScrapBook X was designed to manage a browsable collection of saved pages. SingleFileZ’s project says it has been merged into SingleFile, while ScrapBook X’s maintainers classify it as legacy and point to WebScrapBook as its successor. If you need to organize many captures in a modern browser, assess WebScrapBook rather than treating either older project as a direct substitute for the other.
What each tool was built to do
SingleFileZ: package one page into one file
SingleFileZ’s defining feature was its self-extracting HTML/ZIP hybrid. A saved page is an HTML file that is also a ZIP archive containing resources such as images, fonts, stylesheets, and frames. That makes it useful when the priority is keeping a page and its resources together in one file, with the option to extract the archive.

The project README states, “It’s the end of an adventure, but that’s not bad news! SingleFileZ has been completely merged into SingleFile.” The README directs users to SingleFile’s self-extracting file-format option. SingleFileZ project README
ScrapBook X: manage a collection of saved pages
ScrapBook X was a Firefox add-on built around a browsable archive rather than a single-file format. Its documented collection features include arranging captures, full-text search and filtering, annotations, and import/export. Its feature set therefore maps more closely to the recurring task of finding and managing many saved pages. The feature paper is historical documentation, not evidence of present-day browser compatibility. Paper-Scrapbook v4

Which fits your archive workflow?
| Need | Better fit based on documented purpose | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| One portable file per webpage | SingleFile’s self-extracting format, which carries forward SingleFileZ’s central idea | Self-extracting files have local-opening constraints; ordinary SingleFile HTML behaves differently. |
| A structured collection with search and annotations | ScrapBook X’s historical collection workflow | ScrapBook X is legacy software, so do not assume it will install or work in a current browser. |
| A maintained browser-based collection workflow | Evaluate WebScrapBook | ScrapBook X’s maintainers identify it as the successor; verify compatibility and migration needs for your browser and archive. |
| Optional remote storage or sharing of saved files | SingleFile’s documented destination options | SingleFile documents destinations including Google Drive, Amazon S3, GitHub, and WebDAV. These are storage workflows, not a replacement for collection indexing. |
Offline opening and file-format trade-offs
SingleFileZ’s FAQ says JavaScript must be enabled to open its saved pages. It also notes that Chrome may require an extension or command-line switch to open local files, and that saving and opening take longer than with SingleFile. The current SingleFile documentation distinguishes ordinary HTML—which does not require JavaScript to open—from self-extracting formats with browser-specific conditions. Check the format and browser requirements before committing an archive to one output type.

Project status and browser compatibility
ScrapBook X’s maintainers say they will not implement WebExtension support and direct users to WebScrapBook for modern browser extension support. The repository’s latest listed ScrapBook X release is dated August 24, 2019. These facts make it a poor default recommendation for a fresh installation in a current browser; they do not establish whether a particular legacy setup will still work.

Mozilla Add-ons lists SingleFileZ version 1.4.45 and a last-updated date of February 15, 2024. That listing history does not override the project README’s statement that SingleFileZ was merged into SingleFile, nor does it establish current compatibility for a particular browser version. Practical decision
- Choose a SingleFile-style format when your priority is a portable, self-contained page file and you are comfortable with the opening requirements of its selected format.
- Choose a collection manager when you need a tree or other organization, full-text retrieval, annotations, and collection import/export. For a current workflow, start by evaluating WebScrapBook rather than assuming ScrapBook X is supported.
- Keep the distinction clear: a page archive format stores captures; a collection manager helps organize and retrieve them. A saved file alone does not establish that it has ScrapBook X-style indexing or annotation.
Or skip the browser setup
If you only need a screenshot rather than an offline webpage archive, ScreenshotNeo is an alternative: it is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not an archive manager. Its API can return an image or PDF from one GET request. Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. AI agents can use its MCP server tools to take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
cURL example, using the API’s documented request pattern (replace the URL as needed):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for setup and options. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.
