Verdict: SingleFileZ is useful for saving a convenient, self-contained snapshot of a webpage for offline reading, but it is not a guarantee of durable, faithful preservation. The feature has been merged into SingleFile; its self-extracting format can package a page and resources into one file, with browser, settings, and replay caveats. For professional or institutional archiving, the SingleFile project points users toward WARC-based tools.
What SingleFileZ is today
SingleFileZ is the name many users know for a browser extension that saves a webpage as a self-extracting ZIP/HTML file. The project repository says it has been completely merged into SingleFile. In current SingleFile, look in the options’ File format section to select the self-extracting format or import existing settings. The standalone SingleFileZ repository is therefore not the current development home for the feature.

SingleFile’s current project describes workflows for saving the current, selected, or multiple tabs, annotation, auto-save, and optional destinations such as Google Drive or GitHub. Those are documented SingleFile capabilities; they should not automatically be attributed to a standalone SingleFileZ build.

It keeps a snapshot together
Instead of leaving an HTML file beside a separate asset folder, the self-extracting format packages the captured page and its resources in one file. That is practical for moving a page between folders or attaching it to a personal collection. SingleFile’s comparison of formats also includes HTML, MHTML, Safari Web Archive, and HTML plus a folder; each has different trade-offs.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
It compresses and can yield its resources
The ZIP payload is compressed, and binary resources can be extracted. SingleFile’s format comparison says the self-extracting file can be viewed in a universal format without the extension, subject to caveats, and can be unzipped to extract page resources. “Self-extracting” does not mean every browser will open it identically or that the captured page will replay exactly as it appeared online.
Processing is local by default
The SingleFileZ FAQ says processing occurs in the browser and captured data is not uploaded to third-party servers by default. It also notes that the extension may download resources found in the page even when they are not displayed or cached. SingleFile separately documents optional destinations such as Google Drive and GitHub, so distinguish local processing from any destination a user chooses.

Where the format falls short
Offline access depends on browser behavior
The SingleFileZ FAQ says saved pages require JavaScript to open and that local-file restrictions differ by browser. Its guidance says Firefox and Safari require settings for local viewing without the extension, while Chrome requires the extension to view local files. Browser policies and extension behavior can change, so check the current FAQ and test the intended opening workflow with a representative file before relying on it.
Capture fidelity depends on the page and settings
A saved page is a snapshot of what the extension could capture, not a promise to preserve every interactive or remote feature. Dynamic content, login-only views, media streams, frames, and resources fetched later may not survive as expected. The SingleFileZ FAQ says default settings favor smaller files and can slow saving; disabling removal of hidden elements or unused styles can make saving faster. Disabling frame capture or deferred-image saving can leave resources missing.

It is not a crawl or a preservation program
The SingleFile project FAQ is explicit: “No, SingleFile is not a tool used by professionals to archive content on the Web, especially in the academic field. Professionals prefer to rely on tools based on the WARC specification instead.” A file for one page is not equivalent to a scheduled site crawl, a managed collection, or an archival workflow with richer metadata and replay support.
How it compares with other save formats
SingleFile’s comparison shows that no format wins every criterion. The table focuses on the practical distinctions relevant to retaining a page; opening behavior still depends on the browser and the specific file.

| Format | Resources together? | Compression and binary resources | Open without extension? | JavaScript required? | Extract resources? | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Self-extracting ZIP/HTML | Yes, in one file | Compressed ZIP payload; binary resources can be extracted | Can be viewed in a universal format, with caveats | Yes, according to the SingleFileZ FAQ | Yes, by unzipping | Compact, convenient snapshots where a single file is useful |
| HTML | No; related resources are not bundled into the HTML file | Not stated as a bundled compressed payload | Typically opens as an HTML file, but resource availability depends on what was saved | Not stated | Not stated | A basic HTML copy when dependencies are handled separately |
| MHTML | Yes, as a single-file format | SingleFile’s comparison distinguishes it from the ZIP payload; exact compression details are not stated here | Browser support varies; exact support is not stated here | Not stated | Not stated | Single-file saving where the reader’s browser supports the format |
| Safari Web Archive | Yes, as a single-file format | Not stated | Not stated | Not stated | Not stated | Saving within a Safari-oriented workflow |
| HTML plus folder | No; the HTML and assets are separate | Resources remain separate files; compression is not inherent | Opening the HTML does not require an extension, but linked assets must remain available | Not stated | Assets are already separate | Inspecting or editing the HTML and its asset files directly |
| WARC | Can combine multiple digital resources with related information | Not stated here | Requires suitable replay software for replay | Not stated | Not stated | Archival workflows requiring a multi-resource capture and exchange format |
The WARC overview identifies ISO 28500:2017 and describes WARC as a format for combining digital resources with related information for archiving, access, and exchange. That overview also says WARC can be replayed with suitable software; institutions should consult the standard or primary archival documentation for formal requirements.
How to keep a personal copy useful
- Choose the capture format in current SingleFile. Open its options, go to File format, and select the self-extracting format. If migrating from SingleFileZ, the project says existing settings can be imported.
- Capture the page in the state you need. Confirm relevant images, frames, and deferred content have loaded before saving. If file size or save time matters, know that optimization settings can affect capture time and fidelity.
- Record context with the file. Use a clear filename and keep a note of the source URL and capture date. This is a practical record-keeping step, not a feature that guarantees future readability.
- Keep a separate backup. Store another copy away from the working collection, then periodically open representative files to check that your current browser setup can read them.
- Match the method to the goal. For occasional offline reading or a personal reference copy, SingleFile’s snapshot can be convenient. For research, institutional retention, or crawl-level needs, evaluate a sustainable, documented WARC-based workflow that fits your information needs and technical resources.
The Council of Canadian Archives advises that a web-archiving program should be “sustainable, consistent, and documented.” That is a process requirement, not something a file format alone can provide.

Screenshot a live page without setting up a browser
If you need an image or PDF of a live webpage rather than a local archive file, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It is an alternative to try first when you want a clean capture: it accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor, removes known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets, and bills only clean shots. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with the response identifying the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server includes tools for AI agents to take screenshots, inspect page information, and capture PDFs. This is for screenshots, not a substitute for an archival collection.
Or skip the browser setup
One GET request returns an image or PDF; add the output-format parameter when you want a format other than the default. For complete parameter details, see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. An MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will a SingleFileZ archive still work years from now?
No file format can guarantee future readability. Keep contextual notes and backups, and periodically test files in the environment you expect to use.
Is a self-extracting file a complete copy of a website?
No. It is a page snapshot, and dynamic content, login-only views, media, or resources that were not captured may be absent or behave differently.
Should an organization use SingleFile for formal web archiving?
The SingleFile FAQ says it is not a professional web-archiving tool and points professional users toward WARC-based tools.
