For most people starting now, use SingleFile. SingleFileZ is no longer a separate project: its self-extracting file format is available in SingleFile’s options. Choose regular HTML for the easiest saved page to open; choose the self-extracting format when you specifically want a ZIP-compatible package of the page and its resources.
What changed: SingleFileZ is part of SingleFile
SingleFile is the current browser extension and command-line project for saving a web page as a single file. The official SingleFileZ repository says the project has been completely merged into SingleFile and directs users to SingleFile’s “File format” option for self-extracting files. You do not need to install SingleFileZ as a separate extension to get that format.

SingleFile supports a range of browsers, including Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge, Safari, Vivaldi, Brave, Waterfox, Yandex Browser and Opera; store availability differs by browser. Check the current SingleFile project page for its available downloads and platform details. Older search results and extension listings may still present SingleFileZ as a standalone add-on. Mozilla’s listing, for example, is historical information: it shows version 1.4.45 and a last update of February 15, 2024 (Mozilla listing).

Which format should you use?
| Decision | Regular SingleFile HTML | Self-extracting format (formerly SingleFileZ) |
|---|---|---|
| What it creates | A self-contained HTML page, with page resources embedded for offline viewing. | An HTML file that is also a ZIP-compatible archive containing the page and its resources. |
| Best for | Opening a saved page as simply as possible. | Keeping resources together in a package that can also be treated as an archive. |
| Opening considerations | The straightforward option for ordinary HTML viewing. | JavaScript must be enabled to open it, according to the SingleFileZ FAQ. Chrome has additional restrictions on opening these files directly from the filesystem. |
| Saving trade-off | Default processing favors smaller files, which can make saving slower. | The former SingleFileZ defaults also favored small files and could slow saving; changing options may trade size or completeness for speed. |
Choose regular HTML for uncomplicated offline reading
If you want a saved page that behaves like an ordinary HTML document, leave the format set to the regular SingleFile output. This is the sensible default when you do not need to extract the page resources as an archive.

Choose self-extracting output when the archive matters
Use SingleFile’s self-extracting file format if having the page and its resources in a ZIP-compatible container is useful to you. Before choosing it, consider how you will open the file, particularly if you expect to open it locally in Chrome.
How to save a SingleFileZ-style file in SingleFile
- Install SingleFile from the appropriate browser’s extension store or download location. Consult the SingleFile project page for current browser availability.
- Open SingleFile’s options and find the “File format” setting.
- Select the self-extracting file format to create the ZIP-compatible output associated with SingleFileZ. To save a conventional page instead, keep the regular HTML format selected.
- If you used SingleFileZ before, use SingleFile’s option to import your existing SingleFileZ settings, as described in the official SingleFileZ repository.
- Save a page and check that the resulting file opens in the browser and workflow you intend to use.
Opening and using the self-extracting file
The SingleFileZ FAQ says JavaScript must be enabled to open self-extracting files. It also notes that Chrome cannot open them directly from the filesystem without a command-line switch or installing the extension; files hosted on a server do not face those specific local-file restrictions. If local opening in Chrome is central to your workflow, review the FAQ and project guidance before selecting this format. Regular HTML avoids this particular self-extracting-file requirement.

What a saved page does—and does not—preserve
Neither format guarantees a perfect, permanent reproduction of every interactive site. SingleFile’s FAQ explains that dynamic features such as maps, carousels and expandable content may depend on JavaScript. Scripts are removed by default because they can change rendering and are not guaranteed to work offline. Some domains restrict browser extensions, and resources may be captured differently depending on how a page loads. Treat a saved file as a useful copy for reference, not as a guaranteed exact snapshot of all behavior (SingleFile project FAQ).
SingleFile’s default options favor smaller output, which can increase save time. If saving is slow, its documentation indicates that changing processing options can trade file size or completeness for speed. The right balance depends on whether compact files, faster capture or inclusion of more page content matters most to you.

- Important Notes for PS/Xbox Gaming Devices: You can play last-gen games (PS4 / Xbox One) directly from an external hard drive. However, to play current-gen games (PS5 / Xbox Series X|S), you must copy them to the console's internal SSD first. The external drive is great for keeping your library on hand, but it can't run the new games.
Privacy and extension permissions
SingleFile needs access to open tabs and their page contents to capture a page. The project’s privacy policy says that processing and storage are local by default and that the extension does not collect data. That does not mean data can never leave your device: optional destinations and settings can send it to a provider or server you choose. The policy identifies Google Drive, Dropbox, GitHub, WebDAV, S3, REST form APIs, settings synchronization and proof-of-existence hashes as cases involving external services or configured destinations (SingleFile privacy policy). Review any connected accounts and enabled options if you need to know where your saved content or related data goes.
When SingleFile is not the right kind of archive
For professional web preservation, especially academic archiving, SingleFile’s own FAQ says it is not a professional archiving tool and points to tools based on the WARC specification instead. A single-file capture is convenient for personal offline reference, but it should not be treated as a substitute for an archival workflow when provenance and long-term preservation are requirements (SingleFile project FAQ).
