SingleFile Not Working in Chrome: A Troubleshooting Checklist

Use this checklist to diagnose SingleFile failures in Chrome, from extension conflicts and local-file permissions to download settings and incomplete saved pages.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If SingleFile will not save a page in Chrome, first try the save in an Incognito window. If that does not change the result, reset SingleFile’s options, restart Chrome, and disable other extensions to check for a conflict. For problems limited to local files, a particular website, the save dialog, or the saved copy’s contents, use the targeted checks below instead.

Start with the general troubleshooting sequence

For an unknown problem, SingleFile’s project recommends checking whether the issue changes in Incognito, then resetting the extension’s options, restarting Chrome, and checking for extension conflicts. Incognito is a diagnostic comparison, not proof of a particular cause.

  1. Try Incognito. Open the affected page in an Incognito window and try to save it. If the result differs, that narrows the investigation but does not identify the cause on its own.
  2. Reset SingleFile’s options. If Incognito does not help, reset the extension options using the controls in SingleFile’s settings.
  3. Restart Chrome. Close and reopen the browser after resetting the options, then retry the save.
  4. Check for extension conflicts. Disable other extensions and try again. If the save works, re-enable extensions methodically to find which one changes the behavior.
  5. Report a persistent issue. If the failure remains, send the project a short description with the steps needed to reproduce it. A problem should not be treated as a confirmed bug until it can be reproduced.

These steps follow the SingleFile project’s troubleshooting guidance.

If the problem happens only on a local file

Chrome restricts extensions’ access to local filesystem pages by default. To show SingleFile’s infobar on a saved local page, or to save a page opened from your filesystem, enable Allow access to file URLs on SingleFile’s extension management page. This permission applies to file:// pages; it is not a general fix for a page on a normal website.

If only one website or some images fail

The site may restrict extension access

Browsers block extensions from running on some domains for security reasons. If SingleFile’s icon indicates that it cannot run on the page, the limitation may be the site’s access rules rather than a broken extension. Try another page to determine whether the issue is site-specific.

An image may depend on the Referer header

Some sites serve images only when a request includes a Referer header. SingleFile does not pass that header by default for privacy reasons. Its FAQ describes an option to pass it after a cross-origin request error. Treat this as a site-specific trade-off: enabling it may allow the affected resource to load, but it changes the privacy behavior for requests.

If the filename looks like a UUID or the save dialog does not appear

UUID-like filenames

SingleFile documents a Chrome issue in which a saved page can receive a UUID-like filename. Its suggested workaround is to disable Misc > save pages in background. The project also notes that reinstalling the browser may fix this particular behavior. These are documented workarounds, not guaranteed fixes for every download problem.

Save-dialog setting and Chrome’s download preference

SingleFile’s option File name > open the “Save as” dialog to confirm the file name depends on Chrome’s download preference. The project says disabling that SingleFile option works only when Ask where to save each file before downloading is disabled in chrome://settings/downloads. Check both settings together if the dialog behavior is unexpected.

Both behaviors are described in the project’s Chrome-specific known issues.

If the saved page looks different or is not interactive

A successful save can still differ from the live page. SingleFile removes scripts by default because scripts can change rendering and may not work offline. As a result, interactive controls or content that depends on scripts may not behave the same in the saved file.

If you need interactive elements, the project FAQ describes unblocking scripts and related options for hidden elements, unused styles, and saving raw page content. These settings can affect what is included and how the local copy behaves; they are not necessarily a remedy for a save that never starts. Review the SingleFile FAQ before changing them.

Check the installed version before reporting an issue

The Chrome Web Store listing displayed SingleFile version 1.24.3, updated September 11, 2026, when checked for this article. That listing information can change, and it does not tell you which version is installed in your browser. Compare the listing with the version shown in your extension details before reporting a version-specific problem. The listing describes saving the current tab, selected content, frames or links, and multiple tabs, as well as auto-save and configurable upload destinations: SingleFile on the Chrome Web Store.

Or skip the browser setup

For a screenshot rather than a saved HTML copy, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A GET request with a URL returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Unlike SingleFile, it captures an image or PDF, not a complete locally saved HTML page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Example cURL request (replace YOUR_API_KEY with your key):

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and formats. Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture, and each can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed; response headers indicate the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
