Choose a single-player pirate game if you want a self-paced story centered on a defined character; choose multiplayer if you want to share a ship, explore with friends, or encounter other players. One important distinction: a game can let you sail alone without being an offline single-player game. Skull and Bones, for example, supports solo contracts but requires an internet connection.
What kind of pirate adventure do you want?
A story you control at your own pace
Single-player is the better fit when you want the adventure to revolve around one central character, with no need to arrange a session or coordinate tasks with a crew. You can focus on the story and exploration on your own schedule. If offline play or pausing freely matters, check the specific game’s requirements: “solo” does not necessarily mean “offline.”

A crew, shared world, and unpredictable encounters
Multiplayer makes the most sense if the appeal is sailing with friends, dividing ship duties, or seeing what happens when other players enter the same world. That freedom can create stories no scripted mission could promise, but it also means considering internet access, possible PvP, cross-play, and any platform subscription needed for online play.

How the main examples differ
| Game | Best fit | Play style and notable details |
|---|---|---|
| Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced | Solo, character-led adventure | Game director Richard Knight described it as a solo, character-driven experience focused on Edward’s adventures. PC Gamer reports it has no multiplayer elements from the original. The original Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag remains available for purchase, according to that report. PC Gamer’s report |
| Sea of Thieves | Social sailing and crew adventures | Players sail in a shared world and can crew up across platforms. Its official buy page lists online multiplayer, making it the clearest choice here for a social sandbox built around shared adventures. Sea of Thieves buy page |
| Skull and Bones | Naval combat, ship building, and optional PvP | Focuses on naval combat, ship customization, seasonal progression, and large shared-world events. Ubisoft describes a shared world of up to 20 players with cross-play and cross-progression; PlayStation describes sailing alone or teaming up with two friends. Ubisoft says players can choose to enable PvP. It requires internet, so solo contracts are not offline single-player. Ubisoft’s game page · Ubisoft’s parent guide · PlayStation product page |
The figures describe product features, not how many players prefer either style: Ubisoft lists up to 20 players in the Skull and Bones shared world, while PlayStation describes a group of the player plus two friends. Ubisoft also describes a free trial for Skull and Bones on Steam, Ubisoft Connect, Epic Games Store, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S; check current regional and storefront availability before relying on it.
#1 Best Overall
- Engage in thrilling naval battles and equip a multitude of powerful weapons as you risk it all for the biggest loot.
- Sail the lawless seas solo, or team up with two friends or other players to partake in shareable contracts and rewards.
- Face cutthroat pirate hunters, deadly sea monsters, unpredictable weather, dangerous rogue waves, supernatural threats, and more as you explore a vast open world.
- Craft and sail up to 10 different ships at launch, each with unique perks to match your own personal playstyle.
- Grow your infamy and unlock resources and opportunities to get riskier contracts and upgrade your equipment.
Use this checklist before choosing
- Story or sandbox: Pick the defined character-led adventure if narrative is the draw; choose shared-world play if emergent encounters and open-ended sessions matter more.
- Solo or co-op: Decide whether you want a complete solo experience or the option to share exploration and ship tasks with friends.
- Offline or online: Verify internet requirements rather than assuming a solo mode works offline.
- PvP comfort: Check whether other players can attack or compete with you, and whether PvP can be avoided or enabled by choice.
- Friends’ platforms: Confirm cross-play support for the specific game and platforms your group uses.
- Online subscriptions: Check the requirements for your region and console; platform rules and subscription terms can vary.
- What you want to do at sea: Choose a broader character-led adventure for story and exploration, or a naval-combat-focused game if upgrading ships and taking on large encounters is the priority.
Which should you play?
If your reference point is the solo appeal of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, start with the single-player path: Black Flag Resynced is described as a solo adventure focused on Edward. If your favorite part would be splitting the work of sailing and discovering trouble together, look at Sea of Thieves. If you mainly want ship combat and customization, and are comfortable with an online shared world, consider Skull and Bones. These are different kinds of pirate fantasy, not an objective ranking.
For Black Flag Resynced, PC Gamer quotes game director Richard Knight: “This remains a solo adventure and character-driven experience. It is not an RPG. The focus stays on how you play and how you explore the world.”
