A single-button handheld gaming console is a portable game device that deliberately reduces play to one physical control. That limitation is enough for timing-based games such as the Chrome dinosaur jumper, and it can make the hardware smaller, easier to build and usable with one thumb. Two documented projects show different approaches: Dinoboy turns the limitation into an anti-doomscrolling ritual, while Salsa ONE is an open-ended maker console built around an RP2040 Zero and a miniature OLED.
What “single-button” really means
Single-button control is an interaction constraint, not a claim that every handheld component has only one input. The game, menus and physical design are all built around one button. A player may tap, hold or release it at carefully timed moments, while the software interprets those actions as the available vocabulary.

This works best for games whose challenge comes from timing, rhythm, selection or repetition rather than simultaneous movement and aiming. A jump can be triggered by a tap; holding the button can be reserved for a different state; and automatic scrolling or enemy movement can supply the rest of the challenge.

Dinoboy: a one-button game with a physical purpose
Hackaday’s Bryan Cockfield described Dinoboy on October 14, 2026, as a handheld console with one button. Its documented game is based on Chrome’s dinosaur-jumping game, in which the player times jumps over obstacles while the scene moves automatically.

The button is positioned where the thumb naturally rests. The enclosure folds into two hinged parts, creating a wide screen area when open. The display can use a black-and-white presentation or a style resembling the original Game Boy’s dot-matrix look.
Dinoboy adds an unusual phone-related feature: an NFC tag hidden near the hinge can switch a phone into airplane mode. That makes the device more than a miniature game machine. Opening or handling it can become a deliberate interruption to endless scrolling, with the one-button game providing a simple offline activity.

Its documented parts are:
- RP2040 Zero microcontroller board: the computing platform running the game.
- SSD1306 OLED display: the small screen for graphics and text.
- One physical button: the complete player-control interface.
- Buzzer: simple audio feedback.
- Vibration motor: tactile feedback without adding another control.
- CR2032 coin-cell battery: the stated power source.
- Perfboard and a 3D-printed case: the wiring platform and enclosure.
The project uses MicroPython. Because the design has no PCB requirement, a builder can change the button wiring, display layout, sound cues or game rules without first ordering a manufactured board. The project page presents the concept as a minimalist console rather than a specification for a mass-market device.

How one-button games create depth
Timing as the main skill
When the character moves automatically, the button can control the critical instant: jump now, release now or wait. Difficulty comes from shrinking reaction windows, changing obstacle patterns and requiring consistent rhythm, not from adding more controls.

State changes instead of extra buttons
Software can assign different meanings to a tap, a long press or a release. A short press might select an item, while holding the same button confirms it. These conventions need clear on-screen feedback because the player cannot rely on separate action keys.
Feedback replaces complexity
Salsa ONE’s buzzer and vibration motor show how sound and haptics can communicate success, failure or a state transition. Feedback is especially important when one control performs every action.
How to build a Salsa ONE-style handheld
- Choose the controller and display. Start with an RP2040 Zero and an SSD1306 OLED module, matching the project’s documented architecture.
- Plan the single input. Place one momentary button where a thumb can reach it comfortably, and decide whether taps, holds or releases have distinct meanings.
- Wire the prototype on perfboard. Connect the button, OLED, buzzer and vibration motor to the microcontroller before designing the enclosure. A PCB is not required for the documented approach.
- Implement the game in MicroPython. Begin with one loop: read the button, update the game state, draw the OLED frame and trigger sound or vibration when an event occurs.
- Test power behavior. The stated source is a CR2032 coin cell. Check the actual current draw of the display, motor and buzzer in your build rather than assuming a runtime; no runtime figure is established for Salsa ONE.
- Fit the 3D-printed case. Leave clearance for the display, button travel, battery replacement and the vibration motor’s movement.
- Tune the interaction. Adjust button position, debounce timing, visual contrast and feedback intensity after testing one-handed play.
What these projects do—and do not—prove
They demonstrate that a playable handheld can be designed around one physical button and that the resulting experience can be intentional rather than merely simplified. They do not establish a retail category, market size, sales volume, pricing, battery life or broad adoption. Neither documented project should be treated as a commercially available console without a separate current retail listing.
The practical choice depends on your goal. Dinoboy is the stronger example if the point is a finished interaction concept tied to a physical break from phone use. Salsa ONE is the clearer starting point for a DIY build because its controller, display, firmware approach and supporting components are explicitly identified.
