SIM Cards Explained: How to Insert, Transfer, and Troubleshoot One

Check your exact phone model and carrier before inserting or moving a SIM. Learn the safe tray steps, eSIM transfer limits, and how to diagnose No SIM messages.

To insert or move a SIM safely, first confirm that your exact phone model has a physical SIM tray and that your carrier supports the card or eSIM you plan to use. Tray locations, SIM formats, and transfer options vary by model, carrier, and region. Follow the instructions for your device; never force a tray or assume an eSIM will transfer automatically.

How to tell whether your phone uses a physical SIM or eSIM

Check the model-specific manual or support page before opening the phone. Some models have a physical SIM tray, some support eSIM, and some regional variants differ. A phone without a tray uses eSIM for cellular service. Confirm with your carrier that the phone and your line support the option you intend to use.

A SIM connects a line of cellular service to a compatible phone; moving one does not transfer contacts, photos, or other phone data. Those require separate data-transfer or backup steps.

How to insert or remove a physical SIM

Use the card format specified for your phone. Current phones commonly use nano-SIM, but do not rely on that as a universal rule. Apple and Samsung both caution against forcing the card or tray. Apple also says to use only the tray supplied with that iPhone; if it resists, seek support rather than trying another model’s tray.

  1. Check the instructions. Confirm that your exact model has a tray and identify its location, SIM format, and any power-down guidance in the manufacturer’s manual. Do not assume every phone needs to be powered off before handling the SIM.
  2. Release the tray. Use the intended eject point and insert a SIM eject tool or suitable straightened paper clip directly into the small tray hole. On Galaxy devices, Samsung instructs users to hold the eject pin straight and perpendicular to the hole. Do not probe a microphone or another opening, and do not force a jammed tray.
  3. Seat the card. Match the SIM’s cut corner to the tray’s shape so it lies flat and secure. Use the orientation shown in the device instructions; it varies by model.
  4. Reinsert gently. Slide the tray back in its original orientation until fully seated. Samsung says a wet tray should be completely dry before it goes back into the phone.
  5. Allow the phone to register. Restart if needed and give the phone time to connect. If it does not recognize the card, use the troubleshooting steps below.

For iPhone-specific instructions, see Apple’s cellular-service guide and its instructions for removing or switching an iPhone SIM. For Galaxy devices, see Samsung Australia’s Nano-SIM and eSIM instructions; menus and layouts can vary by model and software.

How to move a SIM card or service to a new phone

Moving a physical SIM

If the new phone accepts the SIM format and the carrier allows the line to be used on that device, you can move the physical card. After inserting it, check that the line is enabled and service registers. A different card size or compatibility issue may call for a replacement SIM from the carrier. Some carriers also use SIM-protection controls that can block activation in a new phone; Samsung advises customers to ask their carrier whether such a control applies.

Transferring an eSIM to a new phone

eSIM transfer depends on the carrier, device model, software, and region. It may be offered through the phone’s setup, carrier activation, a QR code, a carrier app, or in-store assistance. If the transfer option is missing or fails, contact the carrier rather than assuming the old profile has moved.

  • iPhone: Apple documents carrier activation, nearby-iPhone transfer when supported, a carrier QR code, a carrier app, or carrier-store activation. Once an iPhone number transfer completes, that number stops working on the previous iPhone. See Apple’s iPhone cellular-service guide.
  • Pixel: Automatic eSIM transfer depends on carrier support. Google says both phones need Android 12 or later, current Google Play Services, and a screen lock. If automatic detection fails, contact the carrier; Google says the existing device or eSIM may continue to work if transfer fails. See Google’s Pixel SIM-transfer instructions.
  • Galaxy: eSIM availability depends on the model, region, and service provider. Samsung’s Australian guidance covers adding a plan or scanning a carrier QR code; availability and menus may differ elsewhere. See Samsung’s instructions.

Switching from a physical SIM to eSIM

Ask the carrier whether it supports converting your line for your phone and region. A successful conversion deactivates the physical SIM. Google’s Pixel guidance specifies that on-device conversion requires a Pixel 8 or later, including Fold models, and Wi-Fi; these are Pixel-specific requirements, not universal eSIM rules. If conversion is unavailable or fails, the carrier may need to activate the eSIM.

Why does my phone say “No SIM” or “SIM not detected”?

“No SIM” usually means the phone is not reading an available SIM profile or card. “No service” can also occur when the phone reads the SIM but the line is not activated, enabled, or connecting to the carrier. Check both the phone and the line before concluding the SIM is damaged.

  1. Confirm compatibility and activation. Check that the model supports the physical SIM or eSIM, that the line is enabled, and that the carrier has activated it for this device.
  2. Restart the phone. Samsung lists temporary software errors as one possible cause of a SIM not being recognized.
  3. Reseat and inspect a physical card. Remove it using the correct procedure. Look for bending or visible damage; if dirty, wipe it gently with a soft, dry microfiber cloth. Samsung advises avoiding contact with the SIM’s metal contacts and not using metal objects to clean them. Do not force the card into its tray. If bent or damaged, ask the carrier about a replacement.
  4. Check whether the phone reports a SIM. On Samsung, look under Settings > About phone > Status information > SIM card status and see whether the carrier appears. Names and locations may vary with model and software. Other phones have different status menus.
  5. Ask the carrier about account and transfer restrictions. Confirm activation, account status, SIM-protection settings, replacement options, and any failed eSIM transfer. A phone can read a SIM without the carrier having enabled service on it.
  6. Test the card and phone separately, if possible. Try the suspect SIM in another compatible phone or a known-working active SIM in this phone. Google recommends testing a SIM in another phone to help distinguish a card issue from a phone issue. If an active SIM works elsewhere but this phone cannot read a SIM, device service may be needed.

On a Galaxy, resetting network settings is a later option, not a first check: Samsung says this removes saved mobile-network configuration and reconnects using defaults. Review the phone’s reset options before proceeding.

What to do if the phone asks for a SIM PIN

Never try to guess a SIM PIN. Apple warns that an incorrect guess can permanently lock the SIM; restoring cellular service may require a new SIM. Contact the carrier if you do not know the PIN or the SIM has locked. Do not rely on a universal attempt count or PUK procedure, because the applicable process depends on the carrier.
