India’s Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) held a reported discussion with representatives of major technology companies about simplifying GST and customs policies. The meeting’s stated aims were to make business easier and encourage greater investment in India; no specific rule changes or commitments were announced in the report.

Who met and which companies were represented?

Economic Times reported on October 6, 2026, that CBIC chairman Vivek Chaturvedi met a delegation led by Shefali Goradia, identified in the report as chairperson of Deloitte South Asia and the Silicon Valley Tax Directors Group (SVTDG). The companies named as participating included Amazon, Accenture, Google, Cisco and Lam Research.

The report describes SVTDG as bringing together tax directors and finance executives from more than 100 leading US technology companies, primarily headquartered in Silicon Valley. That figure and description are based on the Economic Times account; an original SVTDG membership source was not available to verify them independently.

What did they discuss?

The reported subject was further simplification of India’s GST and customs policies. Economic Times relayed the CBIC’s description of the discussion in a post on X: “Discussions focused on ‘further simplifying GST and Customs policies’, with the aim of improving the ease of doing business and facilitating greater investment by Silicon Valley companies in India.” The original post was not independently retrieved, so this account is attributed to the newspaper’s report.

The stated focus was broad. The report does not specify which GST procedures, customs rules or business processes were discussed, nor does it list proposed amendments.

Did the meeting change any GST or customs rules?

No change was reported. The account describes a policy discussion, not an approved reform: it names no decision, accepted proposal, company commitment or implementation schedule. Businesses should not treat the meeting itself as a change to their tax or customs obligations.

Any subsequent proposal would need to be assessed on its own terms—whether it concerns GST or customs, which processes and businesses it affects, and whether it is only under discussion or has been formally approved and brought into effect.

Why does the discussion matter to technology businesses?

GST and customs processes can affect how companies manage tax administration and cross-border business operations in India. The stated objective of the engagement was to make doing business easier and facilitate more investment from Silicon Valley companies. The report does not establish that the meeting has already reduced compliance burdens or resulted in new investment.
