Silent Hill: Townfall is described as a self-contained psychological-horror story, while the Silent Hill 2 remake retells James Sunderland’s search for his deceased wife in an over-the-shoulder survival-horror format. Choose Townfall if you want a first-person game built around a portable CRTV, signal investigation, stealth and flexible encounters. Choose Silent Hill 2 if you want James’s character-driven story, exploration and desperate combat.
Both are valid starting points, but they promise different kinds of tension. The comparison below focuses on confirmed story premises, viewpoints, signature mechanics, platforms and release information—not on an unsupported claim that one game is objectively better.

Can you play either game first?
Yes. No official source reviewed establishes a mandatory play order, and no source establishes a direct continuity dependency between Silent Hill: Townfall and the Silent Hill 2 remake. Steam describes Townfall as a self-contained psychological-horror game. That makes it a legitimate entry point even if you have never played a Silent Hill title.

- Start with the Silent Hill 2 remake for an over-the-shoulder view, James and Mary’s central drama, traditional exploration and survival combat in the fog-shrouded town.
- Play both in any order if you want to see how two separate teams interpret psychological horror through different cameras and core devices.
What Silent Hill: Townfall is
Story and setting
Townfall follows Simon Ordell on the Scottish island of St. Amelia. The Steam description places the self-contained psychological-horror story in Scotland in 1996. That premise gives the game a location and period distinct from James Sunderland’s trip to the American town in Silent Hill 2.
The game is published by Konami and Annapurna Interactive, with Screen Burn listed as developer on Steam. Because the story is self-contained, newcomers can approach Simon’s situation without first learning earlier series plotlines.
First-person viewpoint and the CRTV
Townfall is described as the series’ first full-length first-person game. You see the world from the character’s perspective rather than behind him, so the camera itself becomes part of the game’s identity. The defining tool is a portable CRTV that receives unstable analog signals and turns them into clues for story-linked puzzles.
Jon McKellan, writer and director at Screen Burn Interactive, said: “The concept of changing the radio to the CRTV was there from the very start of development.” That statement explains why the television is more than a decorative period prop: signal investigation is built into the game’s central puzzle concept.
Stealth, evasion and combat choices
The official Steam description covers stealth, evasion, melee and firearms. Developers say players can choose how to handle encounters and experiment with different approaches. The confirmed design therefore supports more than a single compulsory combat pattern, although the available material does not quantify enemy counts, weapon statistics, difficulty modes or the proportion of stealth sections.
Release date and platforms
Konami’s US announcement says Townfall released on September 24, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Steam and the Epic Games Store. Steam’s storefront separately displays September 23, 2026. The one-day difference may reflect storefront or regional timing, so treat the date as source-specific rather than as a universal local release time. Availability can also change by region.
What the Silent Hill 2 remake is
James Sunderland’s search
The remake centers on James Sunderland, who receives a letter from Mary, his long-dead wife, asking him to meet her in Silent Hill. James enters the town looking for answers. The story keeps James and Maria central, according to a PlayStation developer article, so the remake’s emotional focus rests on its characters as well as its monsters and environments.
Over-the-shoulder survival horror
Unlike Townfall’s first-person presentation, the remake uses an over-the-shoulder camera. You can see James while moving through the environment and during fights. PlayStation describes the combat as a desperate survival struggle: even with expanded combat options, James remains vulnerable and may need to run instead of fighting.
Rank #3
- UK PSN account may be required for any online features
The remake retains familiar survival-horror ingredients—exploration, puzzles, James’s radio and combat—while presenting them through the newer camera and updated design. The available sources do not establish exact weapon lists, enemy health values, performance modes or a complete technical specification, so those details should not be assumed from the announcements.
Release date and platforms
PlayStation announced October 8, 2024 as the remake’s release date. Konami’s announcement names PlayStation 5 and PC through Steam. Those sources establish the platforms they announced, but they do not verify current retailer stock, disc formats or every regional storefront listing. Check the store page for your country before purchasing.

Which game fits your preferred experience?
You want first-person immersion
Pick Townfall. A first-person camera removes the visible third-person character model and places the CRTV directly in your field of view. That makes the game’s signal-based investigation feel like an activity you perform from Simon’s position, rather than an object you watch him use. The first-person format is a structural difference, not merely a camera toggle.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →You prefer a visible protagonist and character drama
Pick the Silent Hill 2 remake. James stays on screen in the over-the-shoulder view, and the story’s premise is explicitly built around his relationship with Mary. If your priority is following one protagonist’s personal mystery while seeing his reactions and movement, the remake is the more direct match.

- Having received a letter from his deceased wife, James heads to where they shared so many memories, in the hope of seeing her one more time: SILENT HILL. There, by the lake, he finds a woman eerily similar to her... "My name...is Maria," the woman smiles. Her face, her voice... She's just like her. Experience a master class in psychological survival horror―lauded as the best in the series―on the latest hardware with chilling visuals and visceral sounds.
You want puzzles tied to an unusual device
Pick Townfall. Its portable CRTV receives unstable analog signals and supplies clues for story-linked puzzles. The device was part of the concept from the beginning of development, according to McKellan, so it is central to the game’s identity rather than an optional collectible system.
You expect survival combat with the option to retreat
Pick the Silent Hill 2 remake if you want the developers’ stated emphasis on James’s vulnerability and the possibility of running from danger. Pick Townfall if you want a broader set of explicitly described encounter choices that includes stealth and evasion as well as melee and firearms. Neither description provides enough information to rank combat depth, enemy artificial intelligence or difficulty balance.
You want a self-contained story
Pick Townfall. “Self-contained” is the clearest official guidance about entry requirements in the available material. You can still play the remake first, but the evidence does not require it for comprehension of Simon’s story.
How the camera changes the way each game communicates horror
The viewpoint affects what information you receive and how you read a room. In Townfall, first-person presentation and a portable CRTV put investigation at eye level. Searching for unstable signals becomes closely tied to your view of the environment, and the lack of a visible third-person avatar keeps attention on what is in front of you.
Best Value
- 1183237
The remake’s over-the-shoulder camera gives you a persistent view of James while preserving more awareness of his body and position in the scene. That supports a different kind of tension during combat: you can see the person whose vulnerability the developers emphasize, while deciding whether to use the expanded options or run.
These are design distinctions, not evidence that one perspective is scarier for every player. Some players prefer first-person immediacy; others find a visible protagonist and a broader camera easier to read. Your tolerance for close-up spatial uncertainty, rather than series loyalty, is a sensible tie-breaker.
What to check before buying
- Confirm your platform. Townfall was announced for PlayStation 5, Steam and the Epic Games Store. The cited announcement for the remake names PlayStation 5 and PC Steam.
- Check the storefront date shown in your region. Konami’s US date for Townfall is September 24, 2026, while Steam displays September 23, 2026. Storefront clocks and regional release timing can produce different calendar dates.
- Decide whether you need a physical copy. The cited announcements establish platforms, not current disc availability or retailer inventory. Verify the format and seller before ordering.
- Choose by mechanics, not assumed chronology. There is no established required sequence or direct story dependency between these two games.
- Set expectations about what is confirmed. The official descriptions establish viewpoints, protagonists, signature devices and broad encounter approaches. They do not establish every technical specification, mode, weapon statistic or regional product listing.
Where these games sit in the series
Konami’s US announcement says the Silent Hill series had sold more than 17.8 million copies worldwide by the end of June 2026. Konami says that figure includes units shipped, store downloads and subscription services, so it should not be read as physical-game sales alone. The number indicates the scale of the wider series, not a comparison of the two games’ quality or sales.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Townfall extends the series into a full-length first-person format and relocates its story to St. Amelia in Scotland. The remake revisits James Sunderland’s established story with an over-the-shoulder camera and updated survival-horror presentation. Their shared series name signals a common creative lineage, but the available announcements do not establish that one narrative unlocks or explains the other.
Bottom line: which should you play next?
Play Silent Hill: Townfall next if you want a self-contained first-person psychological-horror game set on a Scottish island, with a portable CRTV, analog-signal investigation and flexible choices between stealth, evasion and combat. Play the Silent Hill 2 remake next if you want James Sunderland’s search for Mary, an over-the-shoulder camera, exploration and survival combat in which retreat remains important.
If both descriptions appeal to you, start with the one matching your preferred viewpoint. You will not be missing a required prologue by choosing either order.
