Choose Sifu if you want a focused, single-player kung-fu action game built around learning demanding fights, a revenge story, and a death-and-aging mechanic. Choose Absolver if you want to build your own move deck and are interested in encounters that can lead to player-versus-player or player-versus-environment play. Their martial-arts combat overlaps, but their play structures are different.
How Sifu and Absolver differ
| What matters | Sifu | Absolver |
|---|---|---|
| Play structure | Designed as a single-player game; the PlayStation PS4/PS5 listing specifies one player and offline play. PlayStation | Official materials describe encounters with other players that can turn toward PvP or PvE. They do not establish current matchmaking activity. Absolver |
| Combat customization | Start with an offensive toolkit and unlock abilities while learning timing, defense, Focus attacks, Structure management, and environmental options. Sifu combat | Build a personal fighting style with a Combat Deck: choose a type, master a weapon, learn moves, and assemble combos. Absolver |
| Fight rhythm | Demanding encounters include groups of enemies, where positioning, target switching, and objects in the environment matter. Sifu combat | The official description emphasizes tactical real-time duels and battles using attacks, dodges, parries, and stance mastery. Absolver |
| Progression and replay | Death revives the protagonist at the cost of aging. Unlockable skills and the Arenas expansion’s challenges give you reasons to keep practicing. PlayStation Sifu content | Learn moves and shape a Combat Deck. The official description presents player encounters, but does not establish current player numbers or service conditions. Absolver |
| Story framing | A young kung-fu student pursues the assassins responsible for the murder of their family. PlayStation | The official page frames players as Prospects in a world of encounters and choices that can steer toward PvP or PvE; it does not establish a campaign structure comparable to Sifu’s revenge setup. Absolver |
Choose Sifu for a solo challenge and a clear training loop
Sifu is the closer fit if you want a directed action game you can play on your own. Sloclap described it as a single-player experience, and PlayStation lists its PS4/PS5 version as one-player with offline play enabled. PlayStation

Its combat asks you to learn how to block, dodge, parry, avoid attacks, use Focus, manage Structure, and make use of the surroundings. Sloclap describes Structure as a way to represent breaking an opponent’s stance and their ability to attack or defend. That makes the appeal less about assembling a personal deck and more about learning when to defend, create an opening, and respond to different threats. Sifu combat
The death mechanic ties practice to the story: each death revives the protagonist at an aging cost. The PlayStation description confirms the aging effect; Microids’ publisher description explains that a magical pendant enables the revival. PlayStation Microids

- Your enemies don’t wait their turn, and they don’t broadcast their intent. Dodge, parry, strike, use combos and be like water making its way through captivating environments. Learn how to master your art, whether by fighting through the underbelly of a nightclub, scrambling through a refined gallery to avoid getting surrounded, or vertically navigating a towering office building.
- Careful positioning and clever use of the environment to your advantage are key to your survival. Use everything at your disposal: throwable objects, makeshift weapons, windows and ledges... The odds are stacked against you, and you will be offered no mercy.
- Kung Fu is mastery through practice, a path for both the body and the mind. Learn from your errors, unlock unique skills, and find the strength to master the devastating techniques of Pak Mei Kung Fu.
There is more to practice after the main challenge
Sloclap’s official site lists the free Arenas expansion as having five modes, nine locations, and 45 challenges. The site marks the final content update as released on September 7, 2023; it does not give a separate publication date for those figures. Sifu content
Choose Absolver for a player-built fighting style
Absolver is the more natural pick if designing how your character fights is central to the fun. Its official page describes a Combat Deck in which you choose a type, master a weapon, learn moves, and assemble combos. That shifts customization toward constructing and refining your own attack sequences rather than following Sifu‘s single-player progression. Absolver

The game’s official pitch also includes encounters with other players that may become PvP or PvE. That is a description of the intended play, not evidence that matchmaking is currently active or that a particular number of players is online. If human opponents are the main reason you would buy it, check current platform availability and service status before purchasing; the official page does not supply current population or service data.
Are the combat systems similar?
There is a real connection: both come from Sloclap and center on tactical martial-arts combat. Sloclap said it built Sifu on experience from Absolver, while changing the focus to a single-player action game drawing on kung-fu and martial-arts films. Sloclap via PlayStation

That shared lineage does not make them interchangeable. Sifu emphasizes learning defensive timing and handling demanding fights, including groups and environmental objects. Absolver emphasizes assembling a Combat Deck and encounters that can involve other players. In practical terms, the first is built around solo mastery; the second’s distinctive draw is personal combat construction and the possibility of social or competitive encounters.

If you are considering a special Sifu edition, distinguish digital extras from physical items. Microids announced the Nintendo Switch Vengeance Edition with the game, a SteelBook case, a printed copy of The Art of Sifu, the original score digitally, and three lithographs. Its September 14, 2022 announcement does not confirm present stock. Microids PlayStation’s US listing describes a digital Deluxe Edition with the game, digital soundtrack, digital artbook, photomode pack, and outfits; those extras are not a physical book or collectible. Which one should you play?
- Pick Sifu for a self-contained solo challenge, a kung-fu revenge premise, and a loop built around learning fights through practice.
- Pick Absolver for a custom move deck and the possibility of PvP or PvE encounters with other players, after checking that online play is available for your platform.
If you loved Sifu and are wondering whether to try Absolver, the answer depends on what you want next: its custom-deck system is a distinct attraction, but its advertised player encounters are not a promise of active matchmaking today. If what you want is another directed solo experience, Sifu‘s design is the more direct fit.
