Two sideloadable tools fill that gap with the same basic method, Android’s VPN service: Rethink DNS + Firewall and TrackerControl. We could not verify three more apps that meet the same bar, so this guide covers those two, what each one can and cannot do, and the source-trust issues that come with installing anything outside the Play Store.
What Android’s built-in controls already cover
Android’s official privacy overview describes several controls you should use before adding anything. These include the Privacy Dashboard, runtime permission management, the choice between approximate and precise location, automatic permission resets for apps you have not opened in a while, alerts about unknown trackers that follow you, and system-wide camera and microphone toggles on supported devices. Presentation and availability vary by device manufacturer and by market, so the menu names on your phone may differ from the documentation.

What these controls do not do is show you network destinations. A permission setting tells you whether an app may read your location; it does not tell you that the same app sends data to a third-party analytics domain every few minutes. That is the gap the two tools below are designed to close.
Rethink DNS + Firewall
Rethink is a per-app firewall and DNS filter. It runs through Android’s VPN functionality, so all traffic from the apps you select is routed through a local filter that you control. It offers three things that matter for privacy:
#1 Best Overall
- 【AC1200 Dual-band Wireless Router】Simultaneous dual-band with wireless speed up to 300 Mbps (2.4GHz) + 867 Mbps (5GHz). 2.4GHz band can handles some simple tasks like emails or web browsing while bandwidth intensive tasks such as gaming or 4K video streaming can be handled by the 5GHz band.*Speed tests are conducted on a local network. Real-world speeds may differ depending on your network configuration.*
- 【Easy Setup】Please refer to the User Manual and the Unboxing & Setup video guide on Amazon for detailed setup instructions and methods for connecting to the Internet.
- 【Pocket-friendly】Lightweight design(145g) which designed for your next trip or adventure. Alongside its portable, compact design makes it easy to take with you on the go.
- 【Full Gigabit Ports】Gigabit Wireless Internet Router with 2 Gigabit LAN ports and 1 Gigabit WAN ports, ideal for lots of internet plan and allow you to connect your wired devices directly.
- 【Keep your Internet Safe】IPv6 supported. OpenVPN & WireGuard pre-installed, compatible with 30+ VPN service providers. Cloudflare encryption supported to protect the privacy.
- Per-app network blocking. You can cut off internet access for an app entirely. This is most useful for offline utilities, calculators, or apps that have no reason to connect.
- DNS-level content blocking. You can block selected tracker or ad domains while leaving the rest of an app’s connections working. An app that depends on its own servers can keep functioning while its analytics calls fail.
- Connection logs. You can see which app contacted which destination and when, which is the visibility Android’s standard permission screens lack.
Rethink’s product page makes a claim you should attribute carefully. It says: “Our test runs show that a typical Android device sends upto 60% of the traffic to known trackers and ad-networks.” The page does not give a year, a sample, or a methodology. Treat the figure as Rethink’s own test result, not an independent measurement of the Android ecosystem.
Where Rethink can cause trouble
Blocking domains is not free. Blocking a domain that an app uses for login, payments, or media playback can make that feature fail silently, and the failure may look like an app bug. When something breaks, check the connection log for the blocked domain before you reinstall or reboot. Also note that Rethink filters traffic only while its VPN is active; anything that bypasses the VPN is outside its control.
Rank #2

TrackerControl
TrackerControl uses the same VPN approach but focuses on visibility first. It inspects network metadata on the device, identifies the tracker companies behind connections, and lets you block selected trackers. Its official repository states that no root access and no external VPN server are required by default, and that all analysis happens locally.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe project is explicit about its limits. Its documentation warns that analysis may be inaccurate, and that no app blocks all tracking. Treat its tracker list as a map of what it could identify, not a guarantee that everything else is clean.

Choose the right build
TrackerControl is distributed in two versions, and they are not identical. The slimmer build is published on the Google Play Store. The fuller build is available from F-Droid and GitHub. The fuller build carries the feature set the project describes in its repository, while the Play Store build is smaller in scope. If you want the full feature set, install from F-Droid or GitHub, and confirm the version you download matches the current release on the project’s official page.

Where the sideloading risk sits
Installing an app from outside the Play Store means trusting the source of the file, not just the app’s name. Privacy Guides notes that Obtainium can install and update apps directly from developers’ release pages, with automatic background updates on Android 12 and higher. It cautions that you must confirm that both the source and the app are legitimate. Obtainium makes updates easier; it does not certify that a downloaded app is safe.
For APKs, Android checks that an update is signed with the same developer signature as the installed app. Privacy Guides describes comparing APK signing fingerprints with Android’s apksigner tool when you want to verify a download yourself. That check confirms the file matches a signature you already trust; it does not show that the developer’s code is free of problems.

Other acquisition tools sit in a different category. Privacy Guides describes Aurora Store as a Play Store client that does not require a Google account, Play Services, or microG to download apps. It describes the GrapheneOS App Store as supporting Android 12 and above. These tools help you obtain apps. They are not substitutes for network controls, and no repository automatically makes every APK safe.
The Google developer-verification rule
Google’s help page on developer verification sets a timeline that affects sideloading. From September 30, 2026, private apps on unmanaged Play Protect certified devices must be registered to a verified developer identity to stay installable and receive updates. Devices under managed-device policies and Work Profiles are listed as exempt. This is a scoped requirement for private apps on those devices, not a general end to installing apps from outside the Play Store. Check Google’s page for the current scope before you plan around it.
Choosing a path
- If you only need to stop a few background connections, start with Android’s permission controls and the Privacy Dashboard.
- If an app has no reason to connect at all, block its network access in Rethink.
- If you want to see which tracker companies an app contacts, run TrackerControl from F-Droid or GitHub for the fuller feature set.
- If you are installing from a developer’s release page, confirm the source before you install, and verify the APK signature when the project publishes a fingerprint.
- After any block, check whether the app still works. If it fails, read the connection log for the blocked domain and unblock only what is needed.
Both tools reduce traffic you did not choose to send, but neither is a complete barrier, and both can break apps. Start small, change one setting at a time, and keep the settings you need.
Why only two apps are covered
The title promises five apps. We could not establish three additional sideloadable privacy-control apps with current maintenance, Android compatibility, and permission requirements that we could verify, so we have not listed them. Obtainium, Aurora Store, and the GrapheneOS App Store are useful for getting and updating software, but they do not provide privacy controls of the kind described above.
