Choose .com if you want a more geographically neutral address for an international or multi-market brand. The extension alone is not a general SEO shortcut: Google says a top-level domain is usually a low-impact signal, relevant mainly when targeting users in a specific country.
How .si and .com differ
IANA classifies .si as Slovenia’s country-code top-level domain; it is managed by the Academic and Research Network of Slovenia (ARNES). Register.si, which operates within ARNES, describes itself as the national .si registry. By contrast, .com is a generic top-level domain and does not designate Slovenia.

| Decision factor | .si | .com |
|---|---|---|
| Geographic cue | Identifies a connection to Slovenia and sends a strong country signal. | Geographically neutral; the extension itself does not identify a target country. |
| Best fit | A Slovenia-first company, organization, or project that values a local identity. | A brand serving several countries, or one that prefers a generic address. |
| Targeting other markets | Conventionally associated with one country. | Can support country- or language-specific site sections and versions. |
| Registration route | Apply through a registrar; the .si registry does not sell names directly to applicants. | Register through an ICANN-accredited registrar or its reseller. |
| Price | Depends on registrar, term, taxes, and renewal. IN.si’s price list accessed in 2026 displayed €17 for one year before applicable VAT. | Depends on registrar, term, taxes, and renewal. The same IN.si price list accessed in 2026 displayed €18 for one year before applicable VAT. |
The prices are one provider’s displayed rates, not market averages or guaranteed current totals. Compare renewal rates, VAT, transfer charges, included features, and expiry terms before registering. ICANN explains the different registration routes for generic and country-code domains; ICANN does not directly sell domain names.
Does .com or .si improve SEO?
Neither extension guarantees better rankings. Google’s SEO Starter Guide says the domain ending “only matters if you’re targeting a specific country’s users,” and even then “it’s usually a low impact signal.” It also says Google Search does not otherwise care which generic TLD a site uses. This guidance is about Google Search, not every search engine.
#1 Best Overall
For Google, .si is a country-code domain and a strong signal that a site is intended for Slovenia. A .com address does not prevent a business from reaching Slovenian users; it simply does not provide that country cue by itself.
Using .com for Slovenia or multiple markets
A business can keep a generic .com and still show Google which audiences its pages serve. Google documents locale-specific URLs, hreflang annotations, and explicit links between localized versions as ways to clarify language or region. Other signals may include local addresses and phone numbers, language, currency, and links from local sites.
Rank #2
There is a structural trade-off. A country-specific domain gives a clear geographic signal but conventionally targets one country. A generic domain with country or language subdirectories is easier to set up and maintain, but the targeting may be less obvious from the URL. Google notes that country targeting can improve results in the selected country at the expense of visibility in other locales; geographic targeting is not exact. See Google’s guidance on managing multilingual and multi-regional sites.
Registration, availability, and terms
Both extensions require you to check whether the name you want is available and review the registrar’s current price and contract. For .si, Register.si says applications go through registrars. Its published information describes names of two to 63 characters, restrictions on hyphens, a 16-day cancellation window, and renewal periods of one to five years. It says a refund is unavailable once a domain has been activated. The registry’s general terms and conditions state that they were published and became valid on 15 November 2024. Confirm the current registry terms and your registrar’s contract before relying on any rule.
Rank #3
For official Slovenian business guidance, SPOT describes .si as Slovenia’s national domain and frames the choice around a business’s direction and future growth.
Quick Recap
Best Value
Make the choice with these checks
- Where are your customers now? If Slovenia is the main market, .si communicates that focus immediately.
- Where might the business expand? If you expect to serve several countries under one brand, .com offers a neutral starting point with room for localized sections.
- What should the address signal? Choose the local cue of .si or the broader, generic identity of .com according to your brand.
- Is the exact name available? Check both extensions; availability can decide the practical choice.
- What will it cost over time? Compare first-year and renewal prices, taxes, transfer fees, and expiry rules rather than choosing on the introductory rate alone.
