The HMD Skyline is a credible alternative, though its battery uses mild adhesive and the evidence does not establish that it matches Fairphone across repairability features.

The evidence supports Fairphone 6 as the clearest repairability-led pick, not as a universal winner for performance, price or value. iFixit’s scores are teardown-based evaluations, and its site says its scoring rubric changes; compare scorecards from the same period and check the rubric version rather than treating scores as permanent or directly comparable across updates.

What makes a phone practical to repair yourself?
A phone is not DIY-friendly merely because one part can be replaced. Look at the whole repair path: how it opens, what is modular, whether adhesives complicate access, and whether the manufacturer supplies compatible parts and clear instructions. An easy battery replacement does not necessarily mean the screen, charging port or camera is equally straightforward.

- Compatible with T-Mobile and its MVNOs. This phone isn't compatible with Verizon network.
- Opening and adhesive: Check whether the case opens without specialized procedures and whether the repair involves adhesive that must be cut, cleaned or replaced.
- Replaceable components: Confirm which parts are designed to be replaced and whether they are individual modules rather than assemblies that require broader disassembly.
- Parts and guides: Look for manufacturer documentation and a parts shop for the exact model. Availability can vary by country and over time.
- Repairability label: If the phone is covered by EU rules, consult its model-specific repairability label and EPREL details.
- Other buying priorities: Compare current price, network compatibility, durability and software support separately; the repairability evidence alone does not settle those questions.
How the leading DIY options compare
Fairphone 6: the repairability-first choice
iFixit’s 2025 entry describes Fairphone 6 screen and battery repairs as adhesive-free and says the phone is easy to disassemble and highly modular. Fairphone’s repair-help page identifies the battery, screen, ports and cameras as replaceable and links to repair guides. These features make it the strongest fit here for someone who expects to open and repair their own phone. They do not guarantee that a particular part is in stock in every region.
HMD Skyline: a credible alternative
iFixit highlights the Skyline’s opening mechanism and says HMD offers replacement parts and instructions for common repairs. Its battery’s mild adhesive requires extra effort to clean and replace, so the phone is not as straightforward in every respect as a fully adhesive-free battery repair. The available evidence supports calling it repair-conscious, not equivalent to Fairphone 6 across all repair dimensions.

Mainstream phones: repair support with design tradeoffs
Some mainstream phones have useful repair resources without being as modular as the Fairphone 6. iFixit says the Pixel 10 makes battery and charging-port repairs easier than prior Pixel models and notes readily available parts and instructions, while also identifying adhesive-secured components. Its 2025 iPhone entries likewise pair manufacturer parts and instructions with repair tradeoffs such as screw variety or adhesive. If you are considering one, inspect the scorecard and procedures for the exact model; a family-level impression is not a substitute for model-specific detail.

For covered smartphones and tablets sold in the EU, rules that apply from 20 June 2025 require a repairability label graded A (most repairable) to E (least repairable). The European Commission directs consumers to the EPREL database for model-specific information. Treat the class as one useful comparison input, then read the repair procedure and check parts pricing and manufacturer documentation. A label is not a guarantee that every repair will be easy or affordable.

The Commission says EU rules require key spare parts to be available within 5–10 working days and for at least seven years after a model is no longer sold in the EU. It also describes operating-system update availability for at least five years after the final unit is placed on the market. These are requirements for covered products in the EU, not a worldwide promise or a claim that every phone already in use complies. The Commission’s 2025 announcement also specifies at least 800 charge cycles while retaining at least 80% of initial battery capacity for covered products.
The Commission estimates the rules will save almost 14 terawatt-hours of primary energy annually by 2030. In a separate 2025 announcement, it projects 2.2 TWh in electricity savings and €20 billion in consumer expense savings in 2030. These are forecasts, not measured results, and the energy figures describe different measures.

How to check before buying or starting a repair
- Confirm the precise model and local compatibility. Check the model number, carrier and network support in your country rather than assuming a phone sold elsewhere will work for you.
- Open the manufacturer’s repair page and parts shop. Confirm that guides and the parts you may need are listed for that exact model; do not assume present stock in your region.
- Review the model-specific repair procedure. Check the order of disassembly, tools required and any adhesive work before attempting a repair. For Fairphone 6, the repair resources identify tweezers and opening picks as common tools, but the guide for a particular job should determine what you need.
- If buying in the EU, check the EPREL entry. Match the listing to the exact model and review its repairability details alongside the actual repair guide.
Tools and replacement parts are model-specific. A generic repair kit is not necessarily appropriate for a given phone or job, and a repairability label cannot replace the instructions for the procedure you intend to perform.
