Use Shutter Encoder to prepare a compatible video file; use a separate playback or streaming setup to repeat that file and send it live. For a straightforward SDR file, H.264, the source’s intended aspect ratio and frame rate, and careful playback checks are sensible starting points. YouTube’s live bitrate and keyframe recommendations apply to the stream sent to YouTube—not automatically to the offline file you export.
What Shutter Encoder does—and what it does not establish
Shutter Encoder can convert video to H.264 and provides an RTMP Stream output for sending video to a web platform. Its documentation does not establish that it can repeat a source indefinitely, and it does not provide a named YouTube loop preset. Treat file preparation and continuous playback/streaming as separate jobs. Shutter Encoder documentation (dated 27 January 2026) describes its conversion controls and RTMP output; verify the repeat function in the playback setup you choose.
YouTube’s encoder guidance concerns the live signal arriving at YouTube. It recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the stream in transit to Google’s servers. YouTube Help: Live encoder settings
Choose export settings for the file
Codec
For an SDR workflow where broad compatibility is the priority, choose H.264. Shutter Encoder documents H.264 output, and YouTube lists H.264 among its supported live codecs. YouTube also lists HEVC and AV1 for live ingest, but choose those only when the encoder and the rest of your workflow support them. Codec choice for the file is not determined by YouTube’s live bitrate table alone.

Resolution, aspect ratio, and scaling
Keep the source’s intended aspect ratio and use a resolution suitable for the material and the live workflow. In Shutter Encoder, the Scale options include Adapt, Stretch, and Crop: Adapt adds bars when the input does not match the selected scale, Stretch distorts the image, and Crop removes excess pixels. Choose the result you intend; do not stretch or crop merely to fill the frame.
Frame rate and scan
Retain the source frame rate when practical. YouTube’s live guidance supports up to 60 fps and recommends progressive scan in its advanced settings. Shutter Encoder provides frame-rate conversion controls, but conversion can change the cadence by dropping or synthesizing frames depending on the method. Convert only for a specific workflow need, and inspect motion after export.

File bitrate or quality mode
Shutter Encoder exposes VBR, CBR, and CQ/CRF controls. For an offline file, choose a quality or bitrate target according to the source, desired file size, and visual review. There is no single universal export bitrate in YouTube’s live table: those recommendations are for live ingest, not a rule for compressing every prepared file.
Audio, color, and fast start
- Audio: Check the entire clip and listen closely across the end-to-start transition. YouTube accepts AAC or MP3 for live ingest; its advanced guidance recommends stereo audio at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz.
- SDR color: YouTube recommends Rec. 709 and 8-bit for SDR. Do not apply HDR recommendations to an SDR source. Its cited guidance recommends H.265 for HDR and says AV1 is not supported for HDR in that specification.
- Fast start: Shutter Encoder’s Enable fast start option moves video header information to the beginning of the file to help playback startup. It does not create an indefinite loop or by itself satisfy YouTube live-ingest requirements.
Use Shutter Encoder’s documented controls to make the export, then review the whole file rather than judging it only from a short preview.

Configure the live stream separately
When your separate playback/encoder setup sends the video to YouTube, use YouTube’s current live guidance for that signal. The following H.264 examples are YouTube’s recommendations, accessed in 2026; they are not guaranteed quality outcomes or offline-file export targets.
| Live resolution and frame rate | YouTube H.264 bitrate recommendation |
|---|---|
| 720p30 | 6 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 12 Mbps |
For other resolutions, frame rates, or codecs, consult the full YouTube live encoder settings table. YouTube specifies CBR for the live stream and recommends a two-second keyframe frequency, with a maximum interval of four seconds. Shutter Encoder’s documentation describes a GOP control but does not say that a loop-stream preset automatically sets YouTube’s live keyframe interval. Set and verify this in the actual live encoder.

Make sure the upload connection can sustain the chosen stream bitrate with headroom; a nominal speed alone does not establish stable performance. YouTube’s instruction is: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Test with representative motion and audio, then monitor YouTube’s stream health during the event.
Prepare and test the loop workflow
- Inspect the source. Confirm its resolution, aspect ratio, frame rate, audio, and whether it is SDR or HDR. Decide what output is appropriate before changing scale or frame rate.
- Export in Shutter Encoder. Select H.264 for a compatibility-first SDR file, preserve the intended picture shape, and choose file quality settings based on size and visual review rather than copying a live-ingest bitrate blindly.
- Review the complete export. Check image quality, audio throughout, and especially the transition from the final frame/audio to the beginning. Fix an audible or visible jump in the edit if a seamless repeat matters.
- Provide looping separately. Configure a playback or hosting mechanism with a verified repeat function. The reviewed Shutter Encoder documentation does not confirm indefinite looping, so do not assume that its RTMP Stream output itself repeats a file.
- Set up YouTube ingest. Configure the live encoder for the selected codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR bitrate, and two-second keyframe frequency (never exceeding four seconds), using RTMPS where available.
- Test before the real stream. Check YouTube stream health and confirm that the loop continues, audio remains correct at the boundary, and the upload connection is stable.
Common problems and what to check
- The picture looks stretched: The selected scale may be Stretch. Use Adapt to preserve proportions with bars, or Crop only if removing the excess image is intentional.
- The image is unexpectedly cropped: Check the scale and output dimensions; Crop removes excess pixels. Return to the intended aspect ratio or use Adapt.
- Motion looks uneven after export: Compare the output frame rate with the source. Avoid unnecessary conversion and inspect the selected conversion method.
- The live stream buffers or loses stability: Check actual upload stability and whether the live bitrate is sustainable. Confirm that CBR and the appropriate YouTube ingest settings are configured in the live encoder.
- YouTube reports keyframe or ingest issues: Verify the live encoder’s keyframe interval and codec settings. A GOP control in the file-conversion application does not prove the separate live output is configured correctly.
- The video plays once and stops: Check the separate playback mechanism’s repeat setting. The reviewed Shutter Encoder documentation does not establish indefinite repetition.
- The loop has a click, gap, or visual jump: Review the file’s beginning and end, including audio, and edit or prepare a cleaner transition before repeating it.
Copyright and YouTube eligibility still matter
Encoding settings do not grant rights to the video or music, and a technically healthy stream does not guarantee that YouTube will permit or monetize it. Use material you own or are licensed to stream, and check YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-stream rules for your channel and content. Repeating a file is a playback choice, not evidence of permission or originality.
