There is no universal best filesystem for an always-on YouTube stream. Use ext4 for a straightforward Linux setup, NTFS on Windows, and consider ZFS when you specifically need pooled storage and dataset management and can administer it. None guarantees an uninterrupted stream: uptime also depends on the drive, host, power, network, and streaming process.
Choose for the computer or NAS that serves the videos
For a local computer, server, or NAS that reads video files for a continuous stream, host compatibility and operational familiarity are the practical starting points. The recommendations below reflect platform and workload documentation, not a controlled benchmark of filesystems feeding YouTube.

| Situation | Practical choice | Why—and the limit |
|---|---|---|
| Linux computer with one or a few media directories | ext4 | It is a familiar Linux option with metadata journaling, large-file support, and persistent preallocation. Those features do not establish that it is faster than alternatives for your stream. Linux kernel ext4 documentation |
| Windows computer | NTFS | It is the natural Windows platform choice and uses transaction-based logging for filesystem recovery. Capacity limits depend on Windows version and cluster size. Microsoft NTFS overview |
| Linux storage server or NAS that needs pooled storage and dataset-level management | ZFS | Its dataset and pool features can suit managed storage, but it involves more configuration and administration than a simple filesystem choice. Use it when those capabilities solve a real need. OpenZFS workload tuning |
| Removable disk or storage shared across operating systems | Check the exact host and client compatibility first | The available technical sources do not establish one universally suitable cross-platform format. Formatting can erase existing data. |
What matters for large video files
Sequential reads are the relevant access pattern
A stream that reads a large video file is primarily a sequential-media workload. For a ZFS dataset dedicated to served files, OpenZFS recommends recordsize=1M for sequential workloads and also recommends LZ4 compression. These are configuration recommendations, not YouTube-specific test results. Already-encoded video may not compress much, so do not assume meaningful storage savings.

If the same server runs a SQLite-backed media-library application, keep its database on a separate dataset: Jellyfin recommends 4 KiB or 8 KiB records for that database dataset. Changing recordsize does not rewrite existing data; to apply the new setting to existing files, rewrite them. See Jellyfin storage guidance.

Keep ZFS pool space available
OpenZFS advises keeping pool free space above 10% to avoid allocator behavior that can reduce IOPS, particularly with mechanical disks. This is ZFS pool-management advice, not a general requirement for ext4 or NTFS.
Understand crash recovery—and keep a backup
ext4 journals metadata by default
Linux kernel documentation says ext4’s default data=ordered mode journals metadata, but does not guarantee that file data blocks are consistent after a crash. The separate data=journal mode journals both data and metadata and is slower; it is a recovery/performance trade-off, not a backup. ext4 also supports persistent file preallocation, with streaming media cited as an example, and supports large files. These properties make it suitable for media storage without proving a particular speed advantage. See the kernel’s ext4 journal documentation and ext4 feature documentation.

NTFS recovery does not remove the need for copies
Microsoft describes NTFS as using a transaction-based log and checkpoint information to restore filesystem consistency after system failure. Its documented maximum volume size can reach 8 PB on Windows Server 2019 and later, and Windows 10 version 1709 and later, under applicable cluster-size conditions. In Microsoft’s table, the 4 KiB default cluster-size row lists 16 TB as the maximum file and volume size. These are conditional filesystem limits, not a guarantee that every Windows system or application can use those capacities. Check your actual system and software limits.

Filesystem choice is only one part of stream uptime
No filesystem by itself prevents a failed drive, power loss, host crash, network interruption, or streaming-process failure. Nor does the available documentation establish which of ext4, NTFS, or ZFS performs best in a continuous YouTube-streaming setup. Make separate decisions about capacity, drive redundancy, backups, network reliability, and whether the streaming process can resume after interruption.
If you still need storage, choose a drive or NAS based on your host’s interface and compatibility, library size, retention needs, and redundancy plan. There is no evidence-based universal capacity or model recommendation for this workload.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos, StreamNeo avoids having a home computer or NAS stay on for the stream. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud. It is for YouTube streams from uploaded videos, not camera streaming.
