Its strongest case is sound quality, flexible EQ and long manufacturer-rated battery life. Its main drawback is noise cancellation: reviewers say it does not match leading Bose and Sony alternatives, making it a less compelling choice if blocking travel noise is your priority.
Shure AONIC 50 Gen 2 pros and cons at a glance
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Detailed sound praised by independent reviewers | ANC is less effective than leading travel-focused rivals in reviewer comparisons |
| Parametric EQ and several listening modes | Tom’s Guide criticizes microphone performance |
| Up to 45 hours of battery life claimed by Shure | At 334 g, it is not especially light; comfort varies by listener |
| Premium build and included carry case and cables | Tom’s Guide notes no weatherproofing |
What are the main advantages?
Detailed sound with room to tune it
Sound is the clearest reason to consider the AONIC 50 Gen 2. Tom’s Guide praises its audio quality, and SoundGuys also highlights sound as a strength. Shure’s ShurePlus PLAY app offers parametric EQ, letting you adjust the sound to your preferences; EQ flexibility does not mean every listener will prefer the default tuning.

A broad set of listening features
The headphones offer three spatial-audio modes—Music, Cinema and Podcast—as well as Environment Mode for hearing more of your surroundings. Shure lists Bluetooth codecs including aptX, aptX HD, aptX Adaptive, aptX Voice, AAC, SBC and LDAC. Which codec is actually used depends on the playback device and setup, so check compatibility with your phone or computer rather than assuming every listed option will be available.

Shure rates the Gen 2 for up to 45 hours of battery life and says a 15-minute quick charge can provide up to five hours of use. These are manufacturer claims, not guaranteed runtimes: actual battery life can vary with listening volume, codec and usage. The figures appear in Shure’s 2023 launch announcement and Gen 2 user guide.

Premium construction and useful box contents
Tom’s Guide praises the build, and Shure includes a zippered carry case, detachable USB-C cable and 3.5 mm analog cable. That makes the package more useful for storage and wired listening without requiring those accessories as separate purchases.
What are the main disadvantages?
Noise cancellation is not its strongest selling point
Shure describes the Gen 2’s ANC as improved over the first generation and provides Light, Moderate, Max and MaxAware modes. That improvement should not be mistaken for category-leading isolation: RTINGS says the headphones still fall behind its Bose QuietComfort and Sony WH-1000XM5 comparison models, while Tom’s Guide is notably more critical of ANC. These are reviewers’ evaluations, not a single universal measurement. If your main goal is to reduce engine, train or airplane noise, compare current alternatives with ANC as your first criterion.
Rank #2
- PREMIUM WIRELESS STUDIO-QUALITY SOUND: Engineered from decades of professional experience. No cords. No wires. Just pure listening anywhere you go.
- ADJUSTABLE NOISE CANCELLING & ENVIRONMENT MODE: Eliminate distractions for a truly immersive listening experience and hear the outside world with the flip of a switch.
- BLUETOOTH 5 WIRELESS TECHNOLOGY: Enhanced stability and a range of up to 30 feet (10 meters). Pairs to phones, tablets and laptops.
- UP TO 20 HOURS BATTERY LIFE: Uninterrupted audio wherever you go – on the train, on an airplane, at work or at home.
- LONG-WEARING COMFORT & DURABILITY: Built to withstand the rigors of the road. Folds flat for portability with protective carrying case.
Microphone reviews raise a concern for calls
Shure advertises six microphones with beamforming, but Tom’s Guide criticizes the microphone quality. That review does not establish that every caller will have the same experience, but it is a reason to look for call-quality comparisons if you plan to use the headphones heavily for meetings.
Fit and weight may not suit everyone
Shure lists the headphones at 334 g in its Gen 2 user guide. SoundGuys reports a positive long-session experience but notes that some colleagues were less impressed with comfort. Fit is personal, so consider trying them on if possible, particularly if you are sensitive to heavier over-ear headphones.
Rank #3
- Critically acclaimed sonic performance praised by top audio engineers and pro audio reviewers
- Proprietary 45 millimeter large aperture drivers with rare earth magnets and copper clad aluminum wire voice coils
- Exceptional clarity throughout an extended frequency range, with deep, accurate bass response
- Circumaural design contours around the ears for excellent sound isolation in loud environments
- 90 degree swiveling earcups for easy, one ear monitoring, and professional grade earpad and headband material delivers more durability and comfort
No weatherproofing is identified
Tom’s Guide lists the lack of weatherproofing as a con. The evidence here does not establish protection against rain or sweat, so these are better treated as indoor, commuting or dry-travel headphones than as a choice for wet conditions or sweaty workouts.
Is the AONIC 50 Gen 2 worth buying?
It is a stronger fit for listeners who value sound quality, EQ control, feature variety and long claimed battery life more than top-tier noise cancellation or microphone performance. It is a weaker fit if your first priorities are blocking transport noise, frequent calls, low weight or weather protection.
Rank #4
- Wireless Bluetooth Headphones with Active Noise Canceling
- 3.5mm Audio Cable - White/Tan
- Carrying Case
- USB-C Cable
Price affects the value judgment. Shure announced a U.S. launch price of $349 in September 2023; that is a historical launch figure, not a current street price. Compare today’s price with alternatives and weigh sound preference, ANC, fit, call use, codec compatibility and portability rather than treating the launch price as current.
How does Gen 2 differ from the original AONIC 50?
The evidence summarized here is specifically about Gen 2, announced in 2023, and should not be applied to the first-generation model. For a generation-to-generation decision, the supported comparison points are Gen 2’s up-to-45-hour battery claim, spatial-audio modes and revised ANC features. Check the exact generation in any listing and compare the price of the specific version you are considering.
